It was a difficult few weeks in the world, with the earthquakes and tsunamis taking many lives throughout the notorious Ring of Fire. It was refreshing to have a minister not attribute the tragedies to the victims for "wrong" thinking (as happens in "fundamentalist" New Thought churches) or, as likely happened in many traditional Fundamentalist Christian churches, for not being Christian or the "right" type of Christian. Thank you for that, Rev. David Ridge. Thank you for offering loving reflection rather than a ready-made answer that condemns victims. Thank you for reminding us that no matter what happens, no matter where we are, God is with us, and all is well. Well said. Services are held in an intimate space, in a neighborhood at the corner of 59th and Vance. The church has a small band with a big voice that leads the congregation in song. The songs I heard were secular (Elvis Costello and Cindy Lauper) and sacred, weaving into the pastor's message. The congregation was warm, kind, and welcoming. Rev. Ridge proved approachable and generous. He has an easy smile and a warm handshake. I tend to be intuitive, especially when I can touch someone. This man is the real deal. Also, talk among members after the service was lively and fun. And, if you like cookies, the refreshments looked tasty (I stay away from sugar, but they sure smelled good), and there was plenty of coffee and tea to go around several times. It looks like they have a ton of activities each month, from "A Course in Miracles" to a monthly bit of theater (called Theater C), a writers circle (which, I'll try on Wednesday... can't wait!), and far more things than I can list here. The church offers a slew of different ministries, many of which I have partaken in over the past 13…read moreor so years. It has been many of these ministries that I am grateful to have been able to experience. From what I can tell, there are not many churches that are able to offer what they offer, and that's not only an amazing feat but also a great service to the community. Some of the ministries that I've been able to participate in have included small groups (marriage mainly), special events (such as Israel Awareness Day), performance ministries (namely the Passion production each Easter and their Christmas productions), to name a few. Faith Bible Chapel has been a staple in the West Arvada area for many decades now, and in the past year or so there have been some changes that have taken place. Which is partly for the reason for this updated review. Namely, the senior pastor position, going from George Morrison to Jason King. Pastor Morrison helmed the role for over thirty years and my wife's family has been positively affected by his leadership since the early 1990's. His personal story of redemption is very powerful and I am fortunate enough to have heard his story before he stepped down. If anything, under the leadership of Pastor Jason the church's efforts has been focused. From what I can tell, many of what was offered before is still in effect just there's been a re-emphasis placed on what they do as a church, and one of the items that appears to be getting a big boost is the building up of small groups. This is just one thing I've noticed as of late. I've also recently listened to a sermon series on Relationships by Pastor Jason, as recommended by my mother-in-law. In it were some hard truths that people of the Christian Faith should hear. We (as a world) have gracious been offered God's grace, but with it there is His truth as well. Together, though, those two things are very powerful (Grace & Truth), which we as followers need to hear from time to time. I may have my home church elsewhere, but I am glad to call this place a second home. I know there are a handful of items that I am missing, but I would recommend people giving the church a try. It can be easy to get lost in a church this size, but with some intentionality it is almost just as easy to find a small group to build community with.
