I am usually very reluctant to talk to anyone that rings my doorbell to sell me something but Tom seemed very nice. Also, I could actually see the work they were doing on my neighbor's house so I decided to hear him out. I've been considering replacing the 28 year old roof for years, since I had started to see shingle damage during storms, but just kept putting it off another year at a time. Tom was a super nice person and didn't in any way pressure me into a sale. He showed me what they were doing to my neighbors roof and I asked him for a quote. Very happy with Tom's offer I agreed to the job. One difference between Hometown Home Improvements offer and other roofers is that Tom didn't ask for any money until the job was complete and I was satisfied. None of the other estimates I had gotten from other roofing companies offered this. They all wanted money before they started. The next day a crew showed up at 8am sharp, stripped the old roof off and reshingled it in one day. New gutters were on by the end of the day and the job was complete by the second morning. Tom also rerouted my back downspout to the front of the house, which is a huge improvement since I had excessive build up of water from the downspout coming off the back of the house into my back yard. His workers were extremely professional and hard working. They tented the back and front of the house and not a single bush had any damage to it. When they finished you would never have known workers were in my yard, it was spotless. The new roof is beautiful and it was the best decision to go with Tom and Hometown Home Improvement for the job. Where I disagree with the other reviews concerns Carlos' ability to deliver results. Because in my case, he simply did not deliver results. To be clear, I paid Carlos $1,600 to FIND and REPAIR the source of a leak above my upstairs bathroom. He came out, flew his drone around, and told me that he found the issue. After doing some work on the roof, he then told me that he found the issue and fixed it. A couple months later, still had the leak. He subsequently sent a crew member out to find the source of the continued leak. The crew member went up to the roof, did some work, and told me that he found the issue (a different issue than Carlos first found) and fixed it. Still, the leak continued, and only became worse over time (see attached photo). For a while, Carlos talked a good game about coming back out to repair the leak after I sent him photos and videos of the fact that the leak was still not repaired. But he never showed any sense of urgency about scheduling to come back out. There was always an excuse as to why we would have to schedule for "next week" or sometime in the future instead of just making it a priority to come back out and get the job done. Then, the last time we spoke, he proposed opening up the ceiling in my bathroom to find the leak, but ghosted me after making that drastic suggestion and after I requested a partial (not even a full) refund. I then had another company from Bergenfield come out that immediately found the source of the leak and fixed it for several hundreds of dollars less than what Carlos charged me. For me at least (as I can't speak for others' experience), Carlos is a business owner who can't deliver results, and who ghosts you and keeps your money when you call him on it, even after you inform him that you will sue him (which, I will) if he doesn't provide a refund. Not my kind of guy, not my kind of business.

Unreliable scheduling and poor communication…read more I signed a contract with Gikas Roofing for a skylight replacement and paid a $4,000 deposit. Over the course of a month, they postponed the project three separate times. For the first two delays, they only gave me one day's notice. For the third postponement, they gave me only one hour's notice, and that was only because I reached out to them first to ask for an update (they falsely promised me they would give me updates); they did not contact me. Due to heavy rains over this period, I experienced further leaks of the skylight. After these repeated delays and several ignored inquiries about the timeline, I sent a formal contract rescission citing Breach of Contract (false promises and "reasonable time" violations) and that I would take them to court if they delayed the return of my money. In their response they claimed in writing, "To clarify the record: Gikas Roofing did not breach the agreement or make false statements." I have the full documentation, phone records, and email chain proving otherwise, documentation that I was ready to submit in court. Indeed, their claim itself is a false statement. They refunded my money, but they wasted a month of my time, forced significant scheduling problems for me, and left me scrambling to find a reliable contractor. I still have a leak.
