In short: the customer service here STINKS! I took my Toro weed trimmer (aka weed whacker) in to Berger because it stopped working a year after I purchased it from them. The salesperson I talked to wouldn't even look at it, or even ask another associate to look at it, and told me that I should find a Toro store to have it fixed. When I mentioned that I bought it there and that I was told to bring any item I had a problem with back to the store, the associate just shrugged his shoulders as if to say "so what." Later that day, I spoke to the store manager, Paul, who said that I could bring the weed trimmer in the following week and he'd be happy to exchange it for a new one. Paul even told me that the associate I talked to did not follow store policy and that's not how handle those situations are supposed to be handled at the store. When I went back to the store on the pre-arranged day, Paul brought out the owner of the store, Chris, who told me that I do have to take it to a Toro store and that he wouldn't exchange it as I was promised by the store manager. Why would I buy a product from Berger if they are just going to wash their hands of it when it malfunctions? If I buy a car from a dealership, that dealership deals with the problem car and tries to help the customer with the vehicle. I have bought a lot of stuff from Berger because I wanted to buy local. Now I'm going to tell everyone I know about this and urge them to go to Home Depot. read more

Bergers is taking advantage of people during Covid-19 and it is very upsetting... I try to shop locally, especially during times like this. Instead of giving my money to the Home Depot I choose to come to places like this to support our mom and pop shops. Today I sent an employee to Bergers for hand sanitizer (something that is in high demand during this time). Locally made bottles that retail for $2.79 are now being sold at Bergers for $5.99 each! They are literally charging DOUBLE THE PRICE! Totally unacceptable and upsetting to see our local community taking advantage of people while they are out of work. This was my last purchase at Bergers, I will now be shopping at the Home Depot. read more

Always loved this store and have been shopping here since 1985. Well I will now have to think twice about coming back here. Yesterday I purchased an IHealth Covid-19 test kit at $27.99 each. It is the IHealth brand in an orange and white box. Just went to the Ihealth website 12/29 to see the cost of the Test kits. One box is $13.98 plus $4- shipping. ihealthlabs.com I think that Berger should be ashamed of themselves for gouging people like this. Watch all your prices at Berger on EVEYTHING. I was recently reminded by why one should shop at Bergers. I was having trouble with a very small problem. The handle on the crank of a window had fallen off. It turned out it needed a cotter pin and a set screw. Finding the right set screw was tricky because the threads had been stripped. I brought the handle in to Eric in the Hardware department. He took on this challenge and spent fifteen minutes trying various options until he found something that worked. I greatly appreciated his diligence because I would have been completely lost if I tried to figure it out on my own. I have consistently gotten this kind of high quality help there. read more

This is an extremely unsafe place to walk into in these times. Most of their staff had their noses sticking out of their masks, and quite a few either had their masks completely off or wrapped around their chins. They wouldn't even raise their masks when customers came up to them to ask for help. read more

We had a grease fire in our Weber grill that got out of control quickly. The guys here repaired the damaged unit so we didn't have to trash it. Their customer service was impeccable! Everything from pick up to drop off was seamless. They are a very professionally run reliable business and we would definitely use them again in the future. Not providing good service as a Stihl dealer. The first time I bought my electric saw there, the young man did not even bother to show me how to operate it, although Stihl required their dealers to do that for their new clients. The second time I went to replace my chain, he let me waited 30 minutes and still no service. At that moment I decided to just walk out of the door and find a more friendly Stihl dealer elsewhere. This place does appear to care about its Stihl clients. read more

Berger's is an old fashioned hardware store. It is large and has everything you could ever need from stick on window shades to garden tools to pots and pans. Prices are fair. You will pay a little more than Home Depot, but you will get very good service and save a lot of time. I've had very good experiences with the help on the sales floor. And generally at the register as well. But the last time i was in, there was a young man at the register who was rude and whose attitude was that he was doing me a favor to ring up my purchase. Really surprised me. Hopefully management will notice and get rid of him. Four stars without the rude cashier. read more

I came here because I needed to change the lock on my door. I searched online for ways to save money on this, and learned that I could purchase a rekey kit and change the pins on the lock myself. I came here because it was the only place I could find that was open so early, and was immediately asked by staff if I needed help. They directed me to Joe, "the lock guy", who explained that I would be crazy to try to rekey the lock myself (and he's right, it was hard enough just to get the knob back onto the door....). Anyways, Joe rekeyed the lock for me at a great price, and they made me a couple spare keys! Even though he was busy, he took the time to help me and I was very impressed with that level of customer service. While I waited, I looked around and they have a nice selection of supplies. Even though this is a bit far from home, I will definitely be coming back due to the friendly staff! read more

I haven't been to the Home Depot, which is 10 minutes away from my house because Berger has it all. I can't remember the last time Berger did not have what I needed, and I am a very active homeowner, always fixing and upgrading my home. There is always people asking me if I need help. Berger has what I need, especially when I am wrong. So, I go there knowing what I need and "Surprise!" Berger knew better. I still go to Home Depot, which is closer, but usually can't find what I want and can't find an employee to do other than point or say an aisle number and then leave me floundering on my own. Stopped in last week to look at a new grill. They had a terridic display and the manager, Kevin, was impressively knowledgeable about the products. I did purchase a grill, 2 propane tanks and they only charged for one fill. Good service, good prices (cheaper than my local hardware store), putting the grill together and delivery was free. I've been going to Berger for almost 30 year's and have yet to be disappointed. read more

I went to this place recently and before COVID-19 and the workers in hardware and in the back area is always rude.

My family has been loyal patrons of Berger Hardware for three generations - since 1951! Using tools and goods from Berger's, my family built, maintained, and renovated our house. Never a complaint! But these are difficult times, so I'll be brief. Today: Employees walking around with masks UNDER their noses or NO masks. When I politely and discreetly reminded them, I received hostile reactions. Thankfully they did not have what I needed so I was able to get out without having to touch anything. I'll return when there's a vaccine. read more

Berger Hardware is exactly what big box stores can never be, a community institution. The staff are always exceptionally helpful, they seem to pride themselves on helping customers. I always try Berger before the box stores because they almost always have what I need (most recently a T10 secure torque screw driver) as Berger is surprisingly large inside without being overwhelming and the prices are very competitive. I find its generally best to support neighborhood shops if you want to live in a nice neighborhood, and with Berger, you won't be disappointed. read more

Hello, I was born and raised in Valhalla, NY. For as long as I can remember I've been going to Berger's for anything from a light bulb to Snow Blower. I'm a Musician/Singer/Songwriter, but did some construction in thr 70S and 80s when times got tough. Wether Roofing, Wood or Tools I go to Berger's. They have a " General Store" feeling and prices to beat any of those " Stadium Size" Stores. I now have a apartment in Yonkers, NY but still drive to Bergers when somthing is needed. I am not related nor do I know anyone who works at the store. Do Yourself a favor, go check out Berger's wether You need something or are in the area. You won't be sorry. They are all very knowledgeable and if they don't know something they will make sure they find someone to help you. They even carry heavy items to your car for you. You can find everything under the sun here. Well as of today Berger's has lost our business forever. My husband and his family have lived in the same town as Berger's since the sixties and Berger's was always the go to place for everything. We even had a family member, who has since passed on, who worked there some years ago. Anyway, my husband went there to buy a watering can to water the plants we put on our son's grave, when he realized he had forgotten his wallet. He asked if the store could accommodate him, so the clerk called the manager, who went into a tirade in front of other staff and customers and abruptly walked outside. When my husband walked out and said to him, "that's no way to do business," the man began to scream and yell all over again and even took a picture of our car's license plate! I can never return there nor do I wish to do so!!! And I'll be sure to warn of this gentleman's frightening behavior and rudeness beyond all imagining. Did I mention that we are in our sixties! The definition of a local, family owned hardware store. I was once told by an employee, "if we don't have it, you don't need it" and they were spot on. They have everything (and I mean that literally) you need. And more importantly, any of their staff are both happy and knowledgeable in helping you (unlike the big box stores).
