Oh, how to begin? I recently flew from Northern California to Northern Michigan to be a part of my…read moreyounger sister Keegan's wedding. My Mom, Kit, rented a beautiful 6 bedroom, 5 bath home in Robin's Ridge on beautiful Lake Charlevoix for the family and wedding party. The wedding was held at Castle Farm and Keegan's dogs were a part of the ceremony. So we were all thrilled to find this pet-friendly home within a few minutes drive of Castle Farm. It seemed perfect...at least for a few hours. Kit met Judith Winter, Owner & Broker of the rental company at the home to take possession on Wednesday afternoon. While doing so, Dave - the grooms Dad - arrived with his RV. Judith told Dave where to park, provided Kit with the keys and left. By 8 p.m. that evening after all the "girls" in the wedding party had gotten their manis & pedis and we were all sitting down together for a few drinks and dinner at a local restaurant, Kit received a call from Judith. Judith told Kit that RVs were not allowed in the community based on the HOA rules and that it would need to be removed immediately. Kit explained that we were just sitting down to a meal and she would call her back. This quickly devolved into them threatening to call the local Sheriff if it was not removed by 9 a.m. on the next morning! Yikes! I'm going to back up and also explain that even though Kit had provided Judith with the security deposit AND rent for the home, Judith had not provided Kit with any of the documents that were listed in the rental agreement. Specifically, the Rules and Regulations. And Judith was also the person who told Dave where to park the RV when he arrived. Judith arrived the next morning apparently to facilitate the moving of the RV and discussed the situation with Dave. Who I must mention was in no way listed on the rental agreement. By the time Kit knew Judith was at the home and went outside to speak to her, Kit saw Judith DRIVING AWAY without discussing any of this with her. This is the owner of the company! Once the absentee owner and Judith realized that they had made a mistake by not providing Kit with the rules and regulations as had been promised, they began begging vs. threatening. Now Kit's next to youngest daughter is marrying the man she has spent the last 4 years with, Kit is in charge of feeding 14 friends and family AND is helping to set up the wedding reception. Needless to say, all this did was add even more stress to an already exciting and stress-filled weekend! This extra stress caused Kit to experience insomnia leading up to one of the most important days of her life. The first thing I thought when this whole situation began is that Judith and the homeowner had completely set Kit up to fail so they could keep her security deposit. Pretty despicable behavior. Another thing that many of us noticed is that even though we were harassed about the RV there was one home that had a jet ski on a trailer and another that had a pop-top type camper sitting in front of their homes. I also noticed on several occasions - once while walking with Kit early in the morning and once more while walking Keegan's dogs - that none of the "permanent" home owners would speak to us, give us any eye contact, etc. So, essentially, since the homeowners can't take their irritation out on the absentee owner for turning their neighborhood into a rental community, they tried to take it out on us instead. Between Judith's inability to do her job and the unpleasant behavior of the other homeowners, they turned what should have been a wonderful experience for my Mom into a terrible ordeal. And they very quickly turned a 5 star review into a 1. What a shame for everyone involved.

We had the understanding with Charlevoix Rental that I would be bringing my 5th Wheel Traveler. Once I arrived I meet with a Charlevoix Rental Agent. She directed me where to park it and then left the property. Within a few hrs. my in-laws started receiving complaints about the unit being on the property. Complaints from Charlevoix Rental went on the entire 4 days of the wedding weekend. I would not recommend this company to anyone without them providing a clear understandind of whats allowable from the rental agreement. There was never a concern from them for having the 5th wheel traveler on the property, until after we arrived, and there was nothing in the rental agreement that prohibited the use of it or any other recrational vehicle for that matter.
