Dr. Peter Bernad is the best neurologist in the DC metro area. His staff is highly professional and friendly. I was checked in on time and after a few minutes I was able to see the doctor. Dr. Bernad is very kind and takes time to explain everything. I was not rushed and I felt respected as a patient. The location in Alexandria is great because it has a big free parking lot read more

I love Dr.Bernad. He is a knowledgeable doctor with a wonderful and loving bedside manner, and he is kind to all his patients. I have referred him to many people I know, even in different states. The three stars are not for him, but his atrocious staff, which causes him to look horrible. I have found only one staff member who looks good, and the others fall short, with some even being unprofessional on the phone. I do not think he realizes the quality of his staff; he is such an exceptional doctor (truly, he deserves a staff that is just as exceptional as he is). I have been a patient for 20 years, and trust me, he is quality when it comes to neurological disorders. However, I would suggest visiting him in DC or Woodbridge, although be aware that bad nuts are everywhere, so take that into account. read more

Dr. Bernad is awesome! He asked a lot of questions trying to get to the bottom of the head pain (which I thought was very good) and sometimes you may have to wait but when it's your time you'll have his full attention and expertise. He has a pleasant personality and seems to care for his patients. I've recommended him to friends and family. I've seen Dr. Bernad at both his Alexandria and D.C. offices. The office staff of women are friendly and efficient. When in office or on the phone the service is always superb. Whether it's to connect me with Dr. Bernad or to tell me about prior approval on a medication by my insurance they are helpful, knowledgeable, and patient focused. read more

The worst medical practice I have ever had the misfortune of seeing. The staff is intensely rude. Dr. Bernad is a nice guy. I don't think he has a clue when it comes to his staff. They really take the time to listen to your concerns and come up with a treatment option that is best for you. No cookie cutter, one size fits all here. The facility(his actual office in the office building) was beyond outdated (first impressions matter!) with furniture and such appearing at least 30 years old or more in the waiting/exam rooms. Yet, I found the office staff helpful and accommodating because I did arrive 10 minutes late for my scheduled appointment. When I realized that I was going to be late, I called and they were very reassuring that it would be fine because the doctor was running a bit behind schedule. So, when I arrived to the office I was forgiving; as they were in my tardiness. The wait to see Dr. Bernad was probably about 30 to 35 minutes. When he walked to the entrance of the room his first words were (and not in a jokingly way) "Are you here to see me?" "Who are you?" "Where is the chart? Let me get the chart." With a slightly raised eyebrow, I proceeded to be open minded. Once the chart was procured and he actually walked into the office and greeted me he asked my daughter "Why are you here?" We gave him the summary of concerns and such. Then he asked, "So why do you think this is happening?" Seriously. He asked that. Then he starts fumbling through the chart trying to see the medical history and any notes that would help him begin his diagnostic process. Once all the words were out the way, he performed a basic exam of the eyes, ears, mouth and reflexes. There were no physical coordination or sensory exams (similar to what my daughter's PCM performed in office). He really had nothing to give us other than he couldn't really do anything without additional testing. I was not expecting a diagnosis but I was hoping for signs that he knew what he was doing. It should be noted that the exam at one point was interrupted by office staff to address another client which he left the room to attend. While he was with that other patient I gave him some time and then proceeded to walk out of the office very politely saying I would come back when the doctor had more time. He saw us leaving and caught us before we left out the door and convinced us that the office was unusually disjointed today and to schedule some tests before making our follow-up. Ummmmm; NOT! I nodded, smiled and eventually scheduled appts (knowing I would cancel) because my teenage daughter hates when I take stances in public even when customer service warrants such. This was an abbreviated account of my experience due to space and time here. I will post pictures. Overall, his demeanor did not exude competence and the experience left me with more questions than answers. Not worth the risk when dealing with my family's health. read more

Two words to describe him - WISE and CARING!!! He has really helped my mother make huge improvements. He listens and even though you may not realize it, he is analyzing all your actions and words. He listens to the concerns and then makes smart decisions and involves you in the decisions - - which is key. He stays up on all the latest developments and even offers the DNA testing for meds which is so helpful. He doesn't just rush you out like so many doctors do. He knows that sometimes people wait until the very end of the visit to spill out their issues. He is very patient. When we have had to wait for him, we don't mind because we know he believes in providing QUALITY care. It's refreshing that he has medical interns from around the world studying under him. If only more doctors were like him, this world would be a better place! Some things you just can't learn without experience. The office staff is also very attentive and we give them a big thank you because it's not an easy job. read more

Dr. Bernad is the only physician that I am able to truthfully rate as excellent (5). No matter what the symptoms, his opinion comes first. Having recently retired after serving 38 years with a military service (active duty and civilian), I can think of no better doctor to help veterans address their various medical problems. I have been seeing Dr. Bernad for treatment for a severe concussion. He is competent, ethical, and concerned for me as his patient.

If I could give zero stars I would. I waited in the exam room for 45 minutes listening to Dr. Bernad and another patient chat about their lives and how unfilled Dr. Bernad feels "just seeing patients". He acknowledged me once about 5 minutes after I had been brought into the exam room, telling me he'd "be right in". After 45 minutes I left and will not be rescheduling. Yeah, you can get an appointment with him quickly, but there's a reason. I don't know how he is as a neurologist, but he's a terrible, rude person. read more

This place is terrible. The first time I went to the office, I had to wait over an hour just to see the doctor. Then, after scheduling my 2nd appointment to hear about my MRI results. I got there at 8:55 am and my appointment was set at 9am. 40 minutes later and yet no signs of the doctor. I asked for a refund and requested to see another doctor. I called and front office and asked if the doctor could call me and yet.. not sign of the doctor. What a surprise. This place is garbage and the customer service is pathetic. What a waste of time. Dr. Bernad is a HERO! He is the BEST! My wife has suffered with insomnia for too long. Dr. Bernad conducted a sleep study and resolved the issue. She no longer needs medication to help her sleep!! Dr. Bernad is WONDERFUL! I don't know why people have reviewed Dr. Bernad so negatively! He truly has a very kind demeanor and is very interested in his patients and giving them the best appointment they deserve. Don't be so negative towards the students that visit with you and listen to your medical issues. They are there to learn and practice what they learn in medical school. And Dr. Bernad gives them an opportunity to learn in a medical office setting. How else do you expect a future doctor to learn? That is why they are "interns." When Dr. Bernad finally comes in to see you, he will ask the students what they think and what diagnosis or recommendation to treatment. I enjoy these young doctors as one day they might be my physician. We all deserve a chance to learn and I am learning about my issues more with each visit. And what kind of doctor is always on time? To me that is a doctor that has no real time for the patient and is anxious to get to the next paying patient, because that doctor books as many patients as he can. Don't be so negative or rude, be kind. If you don't want to give these students a chance to learn and become the professionals that they have chosen to be, then let the staff know - they are warm, friendly, and accommodating. read more

I also would give zero stars if I could. During my initial contact with Dr. Bernad, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. He appeared to be genuinely concerned and repeatedly stated "we will help you." I followed his recommendations for ten days. By the tenth day, I was in such debilitating pain, I called the office repeatedly to speak with the doctor. I was advised the doctor would call me back. I waited three hours. No call. My husband called and we were told Dr. Bernad would not treat me unless he saw me. We went to his office and even though he had my file in front of him, it was like my initial visit all over again. I had to go through the entire time line of events again. He then told me, "you should go to the hospital and get an epidural." My first thought was, "why am I here, then?" I even reminded him that during our initial visit, he advised me he did not believe in epidurals and stated, "they do not work and 87% of people who get them die from unsterile equipment." I do not believe those statistics are accurate, but he completely did a 180 on me. He refused to give me medication. He gave me Lidoderm patches and Motrin 800 mg and did not understand why they were not helping. He stated over and over how temporary any medication would be. I responded with, "epidurals, physical therapy, chiropractic care and acupuncture are only temporary also." He asked what I did in the past and both my husband and I stated, "nothing!" I haven't been able to hardly walk, shower, or move around. Dr. Bernad actually stated, "why don't you do that then?" Again, why am I here?! Not to mention the fact that left untreated, the problem is only getting worse and I am only existing, not living. I told him I tried everything he suggested and went through with the MRI and nothing is helping. I had an EMG scheduled with him in four days. He told me I need to schedule an EMG when I have one scheduled. In the middle of all of this, after asking me if I worked out before the accident and I replied I did four times a week, he looks at my husband, and asked him, "did you teach her that?" My husband said yes. Dr. Bernad asked, "do you do cardio?" My husband, "I do weights." Dr. Bernad, "are you the strongest guy in the gym?" My husband, "I don't know." Dr. Bernad, "when you go to the beach, do people, like, kick sand at you?" What!? If I did not hear that exchange myself, I would not have believed it. I advised Dr. Bernad how the pain is so great I cannot sleep in my own bed, I cannot eat because I am so stressed, I am frustrated because I do not know what is causing it or how to fix it. Dr. Bernad looked at my husband and asked him, "do you have back pain?" Then he asked me if this was a disability case. When I told him no, he looked disappointed. He gave me two more slips of paper, detailing the areas he wants the next MRI'S to cover. I noticed one was exactly the same as the first one I got. When I reported to the MRI imaging center for my first MRI, I was told by the doctor's office it was without contrast. When I gave the paperwork to the technician, he stated the order from the doctor said, "with and without contrast." The technician informed me if an MRI has to be done with contrast, he cannot do it. A doctor needs to be there for the test. Then as Dr. Bernad was walking me to the reception area, he told the receptionist to schedule an EMG for me. I told the receptionist I have one scheduled already. As a matter of fact, the doctor's office called and canceled on me because the doctor was not in that day and tried to reschedule me for over two weeks in the future. I advised them I need it done sooner because of the pain. I was told, "ok, you can come in on Saturday." Before I left, Dr. Bernad asked me how I am sleeping. I wanted to tell him to rewind to five minutes ago when I told him I could not sleep because of the pain. I am fully aware he owns a sleep center and tries to push this on people. I had such an inappropriate and extremely uncomfortable experience with Dr. Bernad (from completely doing a 180 on me, to the inappropriate questioning and comments to my husband, the doctor suggesting back surgery when he even said himself "we do not know what we are treating", so I would ask, surgery on what?, to suggesting to me they have positive feedback on brain surgery where they snip the receptors to the brain sending signals of pain), that it scared me to be under his care. Because of feeling extremely uncomfortable, to actually being scared of his incompetence, especially since he is the doctor who conducts the EMG tests, I canceled any and all appointments with him. I definitely had the feeling he did not like being questioned and a patient taking an active role in his/her healthcare. I also noticed any recommendations of your care (physical therapy, chiropractic care, EMG) are all with his facility. I definitely suggest not wasting your time and go to a doctor who truly listens and has your best intentions in mind. read more
