Three weeks prior to arriving to Missoula, I ordered my friends birthday cake to surprise him. We both are from different states, thou we were celebrating his birthday in Missoula and I was committed to making his birthday special. I spoke to the previous owner Christine and she was helpful and answered all questions I had about certain dietary needs. She listened and suggested ideas. I ordered the strawberry shortcake tall, fresh strawberries with fresh whipping cream, a 6" cake for $35.00. I waited about 15 minutes to get to the cashier to pick up the cake as this place is popular by the locals. Cake was tasty, moist and flavorful. He was very pleased with the cake and I had happy birthday written in French. I'm writing this review with reluctance. This was my go to place for cupcakes for yearly birthdays and celebrations and have always been happy with my orders. Please know if you order a cake for a special occasion you MUST specify if you want a pretty decorated cake. I ordered a cake for my sons engagement party and it was less than desirable. Absolutely no design, only the words I requested. You will be charged extra for writing and if you ask for a specific color you will be charged extra for that. After two phone calls to the bakery I did receive a call back and was offered a $5.00 credit which I declined after spending $60 on a cake. I'm posting a picture with names crossed out. I wish the manager would have been a little bit interested in keeping me as a customer but she wasn't at all. I don't want anyone else to be disappointed. Who would have believed it? B: Hey, once I read Dick Hugo's "Milltown Union Bar," I was hooked. There was no turning back. We started with Stegner and just kept moving North. Stanford is a distant memory now. A: Well, sort of. But sometimes I miss Tootsie's. That Rocco was such a great guy and his authentic Italian small plate menu was killer. And it would be neat if Ike opened a sandwich place up here. B: (slaps A, doing his best Cher impersonation). Snap out of it! Don't you know that food and drink are all about place? Terroir, you know. Why yearn for Palo Alto when you are living in paradise? A: Never heard Montana called that one before. B: Paradise is a state of mine, not a location on a map. F#@k the 49th parallel. It's all mountains to the grizzlies and me. C: Excuse me, but are you two boys going to order? I really want to try that corn soup special and a side salad. D: (In a flash of recognition) My, my, it's our old friends from Northern California. How the hell are you? Got sick of the traffic on El Camino, too, I suppose? A: Hello, sir. Fuel to soothe the frustrated artistic soul, you know. C: Well, my mother always said that corn soup was good for the soul. So that's what we're having. D: Her mother was vegetarian. She didn't eat chickens; she kept them as pets. A: My parents, too. Vegetarians I mean. I'm allergic to feathers. Out here, it's grass-fed free range bison stew or bust. In Montana, poultry is for pussies. Although I'll take some of that lemon dill barley pea salad, please. For mom and all. She worries about me sometimes. B: This place is pretty popular for their cupcakes and pastries. But we just come for the soup and salad. That, and the fact that it's close to Kettlehouse. That's a major plus. C: We Yelped it, you know. We're driving though. We're going skiing at Big Sky and then on to a snowmobile tour of Yellowstone. It's so exciting! D: We have to do something to keep her busy, now that the children are in college and "don't need us anymore." So we're road tripping a lot, and Yelp is a really great help. How did we manage in the '90s without it? Life was so much harder back then. A: Just stay away from a few of their troublesome "Elites" who write really long reviews. B: Yeah, like "Bradley N." That guy bugs me. Not that I'm jealous or anything. C: I'm a fan of the Yelp Whisperer. He seems to be everywhere. Just don't get him started on IKEA or Yankee Candle, and he's very useful, funny, and cool. D: I wonder what would he think of this place? C: 3 or 4 stars, I'll bet. He usually appreciates places like this that serve fresh local dishes using a rotating seasonally sensitive menu and organic ingredients. D: I agree! And he would probably also notice the high ceilings, wood floors, and natural light. And we know he likes Western Montana, right? Remember his review of Lolo Pass? What a great tip! I've never had so much fun in the snow in my life! A: Yeah. I read that one, too. Boring ... B: Well, not "boring," exactly. Kind of interesting, actually. A: (finishes his corn soup and barley salad). B: For an "Elite," I mean. A: Yeah, for an "Elite." Let's get buzzed at the K-hole before starting on our journal assignment. I love this cozy place with lots of options and super sweet staff. This is a local go to and right along the river path.

I keep giving mixed reviews to places like this. I agree with Rich J, who reviewed: "Like a coffee paradise in a sea of McDonalds!" So, if you're eager to not eat McDonalds, you'll love this place. If you live in Missoula and want a croissant, you should get it at Berice's. But, if what you really want a croissant you'll be suprised to discover these are yummy: buttery bread stuffed with some sweetness ... but not croissant. Zero flake factor. Hummus sandwich. I'm happy to find hummus in a sea of buffalo, but the bread to innards ratio was 6:1. A lonely cucumber piece was holding on to bit of tomato, both planted in a small island of hummus ... all amidst a sea of bread. And the bread was garden variety whole wheat. If you're looking for not-wonderbread, this is your place. If you're looking for wonderful bread, look elsewhere. In other news: - Barley soup with feta and spinach was good - Egg salad sandwich was surprisingly good for egg salad - The kids didn't touch the bowtie pasta, but it was good too. I always try cupcakes when I visit a new town and Bernice's is the ONLY place I have visited more than once. As a matter of fact we have been there about 8 times! My fav flavor cupcake at Bernice's is the lavender frosting on a chocolate cupcake. Another Bernice's favorite is the Montana shaped sugar cookie -- I'm not sure what the frosting is on it ... Some sort of buttercream, but it is not the hardened frosting that is typical on the sugar cookie. And the few pies I have got there are delicious as well. Great crust and filling. We have had lunch there and enjoyed that as well as the coffee. The employees are always pleasant and nice. They are happy to recite the many flavors of cupcakes that are on display in the case, which they probably have to do many many times a day. It's a regular visit for us in Missoula! read more

Butter is a staple at our house and so I had to have it, but was surprised to be charged for it. They do offer a great place to visit and connect with people in Missoula. Fantastic location from downtown, so out of the busy city scape ( by Missoula standards), tucked in a quiet riverside grotto, they bake up some seriously tasty treats. Had English scones with Huckleberry jam one morning, and was blown away. How do I beat that? I dare you to eat one piece of the lemon coconut cake. Delicious light frosting with a lemon curd center, it was the star of the show ( so far!). Fantastic Missoula haunt. Will visit many times again while in town. read more

Alright! I remembered where I put the best place to get a coffee! It's at Bernice's. I love Bernice's. They're great. All their stuff is great. All their employees are cool and hip. They have a great location next to the river, and they're just a step away from downtown. Best part? Generally transient free. Second best part? They host live blues in the summer. Third best part? Spanakopita. They also have the best cakes--period (although they know it, and charge accordingly). And offer about a zillion vegan and gluten-free options: which are all splendiferous. MAY = CUPCAKE MAYNIA. Get it? It's amazing. One thing though--be careful management/owners. I truly love you, but sometimes I catch you with your nose wrinkled and your enterprising pinkies up. I'm bummed they no longer make bread and their hardrolls, the herb cream cheese was a perennial favorite. I'm not a fan if their cakes and cupcakes, they are very dry, and over priced. I recently discovered their lunch options, which I've enjoyed. Good salads and sandwiches, reasonably priced for downtown Missoula. The service staff has been notorious for years for being snarky and rude. The last few times the people that helped me were courteous and polite, making me feel confused, but pleasantly surprised. I have had only had the muffins at Bernice's, and they are scrumptious. They are not cloying, as some muffins can be. These folks know the difference between a cupcake and a muffin. Fantastic coffee, prompt and friendly service, all the bakery items I've had so far live up to the reputation Bernice's has fashioned for themselves. Even the day-old pastries are still of the quality you'd find most other similar establishments offering as their fresh items. And they play, in my opinion, cafe-friendly music at an appropriate volume, which too many other coffee shops don't do. It's usually some type of low impact jazz or blues or classic rock, which is great; whereas too many other shops I hit up play the current teen-pop at too high a volume, which intrudes upon either your conversation or your work/study. So bravo on that, Bernice's. I have three reasons why I can't slap a five star rating, however: The noise level coming from the various dishes/pans/baking implements being washed can sometimes reach cacophony level, which, I understand, is probably difficult to avoid, given the interior geography of the place. Another thing, which I have to say I find pathetic, is the fact that I am charged a fee to use a ceramic mug if I am staying in the cafe to drink it. Is this some Bernice's-specific tax? If you think about it, we should be financially rewarded for NOT using a throwaway cup, don't you think? The environment and all... Lastly: Work on your price consistency. I am charged differently for the same items daily, depending on who is taking my order. read more

You have to try the Vegan Peach Blueberry Pumpkin Muffin. Or the raspberry cream cheese croissant, or the cinnamon twist, or the herb croissant, or the caramel roll, or the burrito roll. OK everything they have is delicious. But seriously.... get the vegan pumpkin muffin. I was in Missoula for a week doing fieldwork on the Clark Fork River and every morning our first stop would be Bernice's. The hardest part of my day would be deciding which pastry to try. My hubby & I had the cinnamon roll & the pecan danish, heated slightly. Perfect. They had one regular coffee, Mocha Java, & one decaf. Espresso drinks available as well. We had the regular -- could have been stronger and smoother. The pastries are to die for. Hubby thought more cinnamon would improve the cinnamon roll; I wouldn't change a thing about the pecan danish: soft flaky inside, slightly crispy outside. Hubby also had an almond croissant: excellent. Emphasis here seems to be more on pastries & cakes than coffee, which seems to make sense! Enjoy!! read more
