This is a great little bakery that we stumbled upon while on vacation. We ended up visiting Bernice's twice during my stay, and I think my daughter will be back during the school year. Things we tried: black and white cake, key lime cake, lemon bar, peach blueberry pie, and german chocolate cake. Tea and cider one cold night, too. Both times, we came in the early evening (6-ish) and thought it was a warm,welcoming place to be. I could see older people chatting, a few young people studying, and others like us just there for dessert and conversation. They don't have a huge selection- both times we went there were two cakes (being sold by the slice. There were more that you could purchase as a whole cake option) and one pie, and maybe 7 or 8 pastry options (both savory and sweet) plus cupcakes. It was still very hard to choose because everything looked so good. read more

Okay, as a bakery it is average, the items they have are standard filled croissants and such. The atmosphere and location is very nice. I would give there cakes 4 or 5 stars and there coffee 2 stars. I have bought 3 cakes over the years and they are always a big hit, people love them. read more

Can't go wrong here - all the pies are amazing!! I've had the pleasure of trying the Mixed Berry, Peach, and Strawberry Rhubarb - I have no favorites, all are equally delicious. They have pastries and lunch options that look fantastic. This place is a treat!!! read more

I KNOW BERNICE PERSONALLY. Pumpkin muffins are my favorite. If you're vegan you can totally eat them, too. Cupcakes are excellent. Duh. I like those little cupcake boxes they have for them at GFS, the ones that just hold one cupcake. They probably aren't biodegradable. Maybe they are. In any case they make getting a cupcake home a lot easier. I can't think of anything I don't like about Bernice's. I also really like the bright paint job they put on a few years back. read more

DO YOU LIKE CUPCAKES? Seriously, hands down, best cupcakes of my life. I always stop and pick up a few when I go through Missoula. Plus they have gluten-free cupcakes that are to die for. Ten years ago I had Bernice's make our wedding cake and it could not have been better. They are an all scratch bakery. The only thing I have always wanted Bernice's to add is an espresso machine. I once did a radio spot for Bernice's. It went something like this: (cue soft sensual music) Do you like hot...black...coffee? What about big, soft buns? That's all I remember, but my answer to those questions is the same as how I feel about Bernice's drinks and baked goodies: affirmative. However, not being a social drinker I cannot quite appreciate the place itself. Like another popular waterhole for the AM crowd, the drinks aren't well ready for take away either which is unfortunate since it's always too cramped every time I've gone. I do not understand the nostalgia with this establishment. The counter pastries always are stale. The seating is cramped and crowded.. Coffee wasn't good. Service is slow. Just seems like a hangout for those still living in their, long past, college years. read more

Great place to sit and have a cup of tea and a cupcake, or a light lunch. All the food I've had has been great, but their cupcakes are just amazing - my favorites are the white wine cupcakes. It can get a little crowded, especially during the school year, but we want them to stay in business, right? Great find Luckily right near where we were staying. Had croissant and huckleberry danish first day and we enjoyed both. Today its broccoli/cheese quiche, Montana gold tea and spicy full mocha. So... on my way out of town at 6AM I stopped for some fuel. They have plenty of homemade baked goods to go. They serve drip coffee (only) which is fine with me because this whole "coffee drink" thing has gotten way out of hand, "steamed this and flavored that"... A good cup of joe is all you need. Stumbled here on a walk about of Missoula because I heard they had vegan goodies. I wasn't disappointed!! Chocolate cupcake with cherry jalapeño filling? Who woulda thunk it? Coulda used more japs but delish! I also ate the plain vegan chocolate pudding cupcake. The frosting was amazing and I'm not usually a frosting lover. I'd like to sit and eat the frosting out of a bowl. For tomorrow morning, I picked up an oat bar but I had to sneak a taste and it was so yummy! The gals working there were delightful as well! Bernice's Bakery is my top choice for Cake in Missoula. Not just cake, but almost every baked good in here is so amazing. They are kind of a big deal because you can buy their products at a lot of other places in town, such as the UC Market at the University of Montana. We used to go here all the time while we lived in Missoula and now it's a must-stop whenever we visit. The coffee is the best, strong but not bitter. I love their caramel oat bars, but Saturday I tried a slice of spinach feta quiche. It was delicious. Holy mother of goodies! I went to this place twice on two separate days around 2pm to see if they had any muffins -- as other yelpers have recommended. The first time they ran out of muffins so I decided to try back the next day. The second day, they had one pumpkin muffin left. Okay, so I must say that I am not a muffin fan, nor do I like pumpkin. However, I got this pumpkin spiced berry muffin and it was the most amazingly, moist, and sweet but not too-sweet muffin I have ever had. From that point on it made me a lover of muffins. Now I know there are good muffins out there, even with ingredients or flavors I don't really care for. Anyway, wish we had a place like this -- rather, this place out here so I can come back everyday and eat all the muffins 'till my heart's content! Oh, and the environment is cafe-like, quaint, warm and cozy with friendly and helpful people at the register. This is a cute quaint little bakery downtown & I've always had great experiences here. I placed an order over the phone for cupcakes for a birthday party & they had tons of choices of flavors to choose from- they all sounded so good I just asked them to give me a mixture & they certainly did not dissappoint! You can order custom cupcakes as well but I decided to just go with what they already had there. The cupcakes were so flavorful & fresh, I was hoping there would be some leftovers to take home after the party but they all got eaten up right away! I'm looking forward to trying the st.
