Yes, the food is great and there are rabbits everywhere. I…read morereally enjoyed Run Rabbit Run. It's more on the casual hip side, perfect edginess that is Castlemaine. I had the Mediterranean veggies with hummus on brioche bread. It was delish and filling. They change their menu often, always offering a fresh fare. It's the perfect café for breakfast, lunch or to pop-in for something sweet. Located a few stores down from the theatre, you can't miss it. Staff were lovely and they have local Harcourt apple juice. What's not to love?

Ok I think I have a new local favourite!! We noticed this joint pop us a few months ago but for…read moresome reason hadn't managed to get there yet. There wasn't a whole lot of options to choose from for lunch on Good Friday in Castlemaine so we found ourselves at Run Rabbit Run and we were not disappointed! There's a choice between sunny outdoor seating on the footpath or dark and moody seating inside. It smells of coffee and delicious 'bad for you' food. They have plenty to choose from on the menu without it being overwhelming. They have an all day breakfast menu and lunch menu that leans towards good ol' American food. We all chose different meals and between the 4 of us we had scrambled eggs (which looked so delicious), an epic looking hotdog, a pulled beef sloppy joe with coleslaw and housemade waffles with cinnamon poached apples. Everyone was over the moon with their meals and speaking from my point of view you NEED to try those waffles! If you've got a spare moment before your food coma sets in take a walk upstairs - it's actually a little art gallery. that used to be the local video store. Now I'm just counting down the days 'til I actually get the chance to go back.

Was not deterred however because we were all starving after touring from Melbourne. When the steak came it looked like something Coles puts their reduced sticker to and sure enough its taste and texture was supermarket budget steak at best. To be fair, the other meals were all fine but after paying almost $30 i decided to complain. Wooly haired bloke took over from other staff who were handling my complaint. He insisted he eats the steak all the time and its fine so not sure what my problem is? Wow... so i said i'll skip dinner then but he insisted he will not be returning the money for the meal as there was nothing wrong with the steak. In fact it comes from his farm! Oh and its his pub too and that's that... If you like the sound of that kind of customer service eat here. If not give this place a miss and try the alternatives...

Feeling tired, I chose the specials for the day - corned beef and rice pudding. Often in the Wimmera and Mallee, one finds pub kitchens churn out Corned Beef which is tough, stringy and bland. Therefore, as I waited for my meal, I was not expecting anything too inspiring. One mouthful revealed that I was about to consume Corned Beef as it SHOULD be cooked. It was absolutely delicious. The local organic meat was tender and had been given a full flavour by being cooked to a very good traditional recipe - one my grandmother would be proud of... The mashed potatoes were smooth and plentiful and rather than cabbage, were served with al-dente steamed vegetables. The rice pudding included marinated raisins and really met the description of being "comfort food". Yummo! What a very pleasant surprise it was to find that The Maldon Hotel has a chef who really cares about the food he is presenting!
