Times have changed a lot since then, but I still like to go into Pets Legend to have a look at what's on offer. Pets Legend offer the premium food varieties as well as the more normal pet supplies. They're usually open til 6pm, which is handy, as there have been times when my cats have threatened my well-being after getting home from work and discovering that we were all out of their food. The service is good, and the staff are fairly knowledgeable about their products. I recommend this shop.

Whenever this happens, off I trundle to Pets Legend for cheap cheap cleaning products and advice. They're also the only pet supplies shop I've found that stocks his favourite ball - the kind of favourite where he brings it to bed like a teddy bear and wore the damn thing down to half its size. The best bit about the pet shop is the lack of live animals. Ok, they have fish, but if you need to take an ethical stance and visit a puppy/kitten/bunny free shop, here's one to go to.

(Public holidays they are open from 10-4). One store is dedicated to all things fish, birds and reptiles - including the live animals themselves. Prices here are really good and the animals are well looked after. The fish tanks are clean and the staff are really good at chasing down the exact specimen you want for your new pet. The second store is for kittens, puppies, small animals and grooming needs. They provide a grooming service here but I have never utilized that. While meandering around their pet toys you can hear the sound of puppies playing and kittens purring - nothing like the kind of pet store where the animals are asleep in tiny boxes. The staff are happy to let you have a hold or a play with the animals. In terms of pet accessories these guys have everything. Albeit groovy dog collars, piles of pet food, mirrors for your birdcage or all manner of fish tanks - you are bound to find it here. They even have a Do It Yourself coin operated dog wash in their store which is always a lot of splashy fun - depending on how well behaved your dog is. Lucky for owners of escape artists it has a reasonably tall gate that prevents your dog from jumping out. I recommend keeping the lead on just in case. This is a really great store for pet lovers and staff turnaround here is pretty slow so if you are a regular you will be greeted by name. Highly recommend this one.

I've used the dog bath at the back of the store a few times and it's really handy. The store has an excellent selection of dry foods and refrigerated meats plus loads of dog treats. Watch your dog if you're walking around the store with them - a little tempting! I've had to purchase a couple of treats unintentionally. I don't really go to the other part of the store with the birds and fish. I like that they now have pet adoption, which I think they have had for a while but I only noticed a few months ago.

City Pets isn't like other pet stores, sure there are animals inside but I haven't ever seen any puppies and I've seen kittens there once - and that was a couple of years ago. City Pets has rabbits, guinea pigs, fish and birds. What City Pets is good for is stocking up on supplies for your companion. Enormous mounds of dog and cat food, beds and travel houses of all shapes and colours, and a deli devoted to different bones and catnip mice are all found here. The staff there are pretty friendly and don't seem to mind if you just have a browse through the stock and check out the animals. There are also some mice and hermit crabs up the back and City Pets always seems to have a great little range of canaries, finches and budgies.

They also sell vermin, rodents, and similar mammals, including things that hop. The highlight for me was having a custom made fish tank that came in to be well under half the price of an off the shelf factory-made one of smaller size. The service is relaxed and friendly, with the staff happy to shoot the breeze. I get chook feed here (no chooks for sale), and there is all manner of other feed/litter by the 20kg sack.
