I absolutely love this place! The doctors truly care and the staff are sweet and helpful. My baby has seen pretty much every doctor (I may be a hypochondriac about my fur baby) and they're all great. Dr Heiderich has performed 2 surgeries and they went very smoothly! She knows how much I love her and has been so helpful! Dr Kyle is amazing as well! He sits on the floor to help calm her nerves and also keeps record of all the things this mommy gets paranoid about and doesn't make me feel stupid when I share what I'm worried about. (Heiderich is her vet and is the same which is why I was ecstatic to find BFV) read more

Ownership has changed and the service I had was awful. I was a client for 30+ years, but I will never take my pets there again. I took my dog in for a teeth cleaning, but she ended up having nearly $2,000 in surgery to remove all of her teeth instead. It was the right thing to do, but as you can imagine, it was extremely distressful. Afterwards I received the bill, which STILL included the cost of a "cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatment." I politely asked that the charge be removed, since her teeth were actually removed and never cleaned. Initially, they refused, saying I still owed them nearly $150 for the cleaning. I then wrote the office manager an email explaining the situation and expressing my disappointment. To her credit, she finally refunded the charge. However, during a follow up appointment, Dr. Todd Kyle had the audacity to tell me he didn't appreciate my email or my tone and abruptly tried to walk out of the exam. He didn't know the whole situation, clearly, nor had he given me the opportunity to explain my perspective. He was rude, dismissive and disrespectful. Without talking to his own staff about the situation, he decided it was his place to admonish me and tell me how I should have reacted. I refuse to let him treat me like that and would never let him treat a pet of mine again. The previous owners NEVER would have let this happen. I loved them and was an ardent advocate for them for decades. Now I'm looking for a new vet. read more

Rest in Peace Huntly, My Love Dr. Rex Riggs, DVM at Best Friends Veterinary Hospital may not have intended to kill my 15-month-old puppy, Huntly. The puppy had gotten into the trash and had to be opened up to retrieve indigestible objects from his stomach and bowel. He came home and seemed improved for 2 or 3 days, then he started began throwing up and acting listless. We called the vet and was told to discontinue the antibiotic as it may be irritating his stomach. When he seemed to be getting worse, we took him to the vet and was concerned about why he was still failing. His belly was palpated and he was sent home. On day 13, Dr Riggs opened him up again to find 6 stitches in his bowel and stomach were missing. Dr Riggs admitted it was too soon for the stitches to have been absorbed and he may have "missed" those 6 stitches. We were told he had no infection and to take him home. He had a "grenade" device but the fluid was not going into it as expected. Instead, he was bleeding from his wound. We tried to reach Dr. Riggs but he does not take after hour calls. The service said to take the dog to OSU. His heart rate was 240 (110 to 140 was normal) he was bleeding from his wound. The Vet at OSU said he was infected, had adhesions growing in him, and his organs were on the verge of shut down. They recommended euthanizing him immediately. How could this be? 4 hours before I was told he had no infection! Why did Dr. Riggs forget 6 stitches? It allowed his bowel contents to spill into his peritoneum. I no longer trust Best Friends or Dr Riggs. Why is there no attendant during the night at his Vet? Why is he not taking phone calls after a critical surgery such as this? How could he be sent home and within 6 hours, a 15-month-old puppy would be dead? read more

Rip-off. Do not take any supplements that they gave you at checkout. We took our dog in to look at his leg. The vet didn't even mention she would give us joint supplement for our dog. At checkout, they told us how to give it to our dog which was ok. But boy, I was charged $97 for a bottle of joint supplement. Amazon is selling it exact count and strength for $50. I called the vet and they said Amazon may sell counterfeit, what a bad excuse and to put others down. They won't take it back even the bottle is unopened. Not an honest business practice. read more

Unavailable after hours. My friends dog was misdiagnosed by Dr Riggs. Took to another dr and due to the extent of problem. They had to euthenize the poor dog. We use Healthy pets of Wedgewood in Powell. Their great! Always available. We even board our dog there. They take such great care of your animal and pets read more

Pros: 1.) Dr. Debbie Heidrich - she is incredible. If I could rate her alone, I'd give her 5 stars. She's cared for my dogs for over 10 years. I followed her to Best Friends from VCA Westerville. She's by far one the most knowledgeable, thorough, compassionate veterinarians that's possibly ever graduated vet school. She's fantastic with nervous dogs, sick dogs, and she quite frankly just has an awesome personality. She follows up. She follows through. If she doesn't know something (which is rare) she finds out and gets back to you. 2.) the vet techs - I've never met a vet tech at Best Friends that I didn't like. They're all sweet, gentle with the animals, and knowledgeable. Now let's get to the Cons, and the reason why this isn't a 5 star rated facility. Cons: 1.) PRICING - the prices on EVERYTHING at Best Friends Animal Hospital are GROSSLY overinflated...and I mean horrendously. I priced a half a dozen animal hospitals/vets with the same or better veterinary credentials and similar business models. Best Friends' competitors are more competitively priced on every single thing from exam fees to blood tests to X-Rays. Even vaccinations are cheaper just about everywhere else. Speaking of exam fees, multi-pet discounts are exponentially better at every other place I called. Furthermore, when I spoke to the owner, Dr. Riggs, I asked him how much a standard office visit cost. He told me he "didn't know," and that he "didn't have a computer up in front of him right now so he wasn't able to tell me." Dr. Riggs is the man who sets the fees in the office and the only person who can "ok" a fee discount or a refund of any kind. He's the "money guy." How does the owner of a business not even know how much an office visit costs? Yikes. 2.) Dr. Riggs - I'm sure he cares about animals, but it's evident he cares about cash more. He knows nothing about the business side of the very office he owns, yet he refuses to waive a $50 blood draw fee for one of his best clients (me!) who spends over $14,000/YEAR (and none of my pets are even sick!) at his business. His reason? He says to me that, "if I don't collect THAT $50, it's 50 less dollars I'll have to pay my staff." THAT was his reason for not waiving a $50 blood draw fee for a blood test he insisted on repeating on my dog - a test that had JUST been done 47 days prior with normal results. A repeat blood test for my dog, who wasn't sick, but was just there to get her teeth cleaned. All I wanted was to just NOT have to pay ANOTHER $50 considering I JUST paid it 47 days ago for the same blood test that came back normal. This is not a man who cares about animals first. This is a man who cares about squeezing his clients for all they're worth. Dr. Heidrich is the only reason I even rated this place 1 star. If she wasn't there I'd give it 0. However, if Dr. Riggs left and Dr. Heidrich started running the place, I'd come back in a heartbeat and change my review to 5 stars. The only reason I didn't leave a year ago and kept forking out money hand over fist is because she's such an incredible doctor. read more

Dr. Riggs and his team at Best Friends do an outstanding job taking care of my Canine Companions for Independence service dog Carlos. Dr. Riggs is the official vet for CCI's North Central Regional Training Center, located in nearby Delaware, OH. He took care of Carlos as a pup, from when he was six weeks old until Carlos and I graduated from CCI Team Training in November of 2009. Carlos has loved being back at Best Friends! We had chosen and gone to another vet at first which was closer to home, but came back to Best Friends because we knew that Dr. Riggs and his colleagues know Carlos best. It is so worth the 45-minute drive! Dr. Riggs and his team at Best Friends are the only people I trust to help me care for my best friend! We wouldn't dream of going anywhere else! read more

Dr Heidrich is amazing. Very caring and compassionate. If the clinic was only run by her I would definitely return. I've been taking my cat here for 2 years. Scheduled a spay for my cat today with Dr Latimer because my cat had not been in heat for a few months. Was not able to talk to Dr Latimer on the phone before appointment to answer questions. Was not allowed to talk to doctor when I dropped cat off this morning. Called in afternoon to check on cat. No one knew anything other than cat was resting comfortably because no notes in chart. I was very angry that I was unable to talk to the Doctor, yet she still refused to come to the phone! Eventually a tech came to the phone and explained outcome of surgery. I was told a tech would be handing my cat over when I picked her up even though I had expressed my anger over not being able to see the vet or even talk to her. Even when I picked up my cat and asked for her medical records because I would not be bringing her back, the vet STILL would not talk to me. The medical records were incomplete. They did not include the surgery outcome. These people do not care about their patients or the pet owners - it's just a money making business to them. read more

There are not enough words to appropriately express my love for Best Friends. Growing up, we took my family cat here so I knew when I got two cats of my own, this is where we would take them. My cats have had quite a few medical issues over the past 5 years and Dr. Heidrich has always been there for us, at all hours of the day, by phone or email. She follows up and follows through and most importantly she treats my babies like her own. She never forces you into a decision or makes you feel like you are being given anything but the best and most fair treatment. She explains things in terms that make sense and she does so with so much love. We recently had to say goodbye to our beloved girl, Grey. In one of the hardest times of our life, Best Friends has been there. They have sent cards and poems and messages of support. They even made a donation in her name. I am forever grateful for the love and dedication they have shown our family. Thank you will never be enough, but if you are looking for a Vet, look no further. read more

dr riggs is the best vet in the world. never has a vet got down on the floor and allow our dog to lick his face and sit in his lap before the exam. his volunteer work with both the canine companions and pelatonia put him above the crust. our chocolate labs wilbur and alice love going to the vet. the staff as well are great with animals and pet parents! read more

Dr Riggs and staff just got my 2 year old beagle/corgi through a serious illness and surgery. The staff is very caring, compassionate and professional. This is a veterinary BUSINESS. They exist to make money. While the staff is very friendly and kind toward the animals, every "fix" is terribly expensive. We've been going there with our dog for two years, but no more. Example: the dog spent a day vomiting for no apparent reason. They suggested $600 worth of tests (not treatment, mind you, just the tests). When I declined, they suggested some very expensive dog food - $20 for 6 days' worth. This I bought, but as the dog was better by the next day, it obviously wasn't the result of new dog food. This is just one example, I could give more, but they're all about the same type of story. read more
