Our dear 15 month old puppy, Huntly, died hours after a second surgery performed by Rex Riggs, DVM At Best Friends Veterinary Hospital
    Jill F.

Rest in Peace Huntly, My Love Dr. Rex Riggs, DVM at Best Friends Veterinary Hospital may not have intended to kill my 15-month-old puppy, Huntly. The puppy had gotten into the trash and had to be opened up to retrieve indigestible objects from his stomach and bowel. He came home and seemed improved for 2 or 3 days, then he started began throwing up and acting listless. We called the vet and was told to discontinue the antibiotic as it may be irritating his stomach. When he seemed to be getting worse, we took him to the vet and was concerned about why he was still failing. His belly was palpated and he was sent home. On day 13, Dr Riggs opened him up again to find 6 stitches in his bowel and stomach were missing. Dr Riggs admitted it was too soon for the stitches to have been absorbed and he may have "missed" those 6 stitches. We were told he had no infection and to take him home. He had a "grenade" device but the fluid was not going into it as expected. Instead, he was bleeding from his wound. We tried to reach Dr. Riggs but he does not take after hour calls. The service said to take the dog to OSU. His heart rate was 240 (110 to 140 was normal) he was bleeding from his wound. The Vet at OSU said he was infected, had adhesions growing in him, and his organs were on the verge of shut down. They recommended euthanizing him immediately. How could this be? 4 hours before I was told he had no infection! Why did Dr. Riggs forget 6 stitches? It allowed his bowel contents to spill into his peritoneum. I no longer trust Best Friends or Dr Riggs. Why is there no attendant during the night at his Vet? Why is he not taking phone calls after a critical surgery such as this? How could he be sent home and within 6 hours, a 15-month-old puppy would be dead?

This is a very delayed review and I debated on whether or not to share but after 3 years since I…read morehad my negative experience with formerly "Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital" now Muirfield Animal Hospital, I feel ready to share in order to help anyone who potentially could run into the same experience. I adopted my Maltese puppy Isabelle in early December 2019, she was a very finicky eater and no matter what I tried would not eat. I had to use a syringe to get her to at least eat turkey baby food. Taking her to Muirfield for her first appointments, they instructed me to leave food out for 5 minutes and if she doesn't eat, take the food away and try later. In hindsight, I have learned this is incredibly dangerous for toy breeds as their blood sugar drops easily if they are not eating. I also felt they had judgement to where I had purchased Isabelle, Premier Pups. A couple of weeks went by with me taking her in to Muirfield to run blood tests and try to understand what was wrong with Isabelle. While I was out of town, my partner had her and she fell very ill. She pooped and vomited, cried out sounds my partner has never heard before. He ran her over to Muirfield and they instructed he take her to MedVet emergency hospital. She spent 3 nights there while they ran a variety of tests. When we got her back, she had tested positive for Giardia. When I went back to Muirfield Animal Hospital again, Dr. Mark Kurtzman convinced me Isabelle had "failure to thrive" and should be put down. He wrote the attached letter for me to share with the breeder, Premier Pups. I shared the letter with Mike the owner and he quickly went into motion to address the health concerns Isabelle was facing. He took her back, used the vet clinic originally recommended to me, Bethel Road Animal Hospital, and kept her for 2 weeks to recover. He was extremely passionate and rightly upset with Dr. Kurtzman's assessment. Happy to say there's a good ending to this story, I did not follow Dr. Kurtzman's advice to put Isabelle down. She did NOT have failure to thrive, Muirfield had failure to try everything they could before giving up on her. Isabelle is over 3 years old now, perfectly healthy and will never, ever be recommending Muirfield Animal Hospital.

They are fully equip to deal with the worse of emergency situations. I love my fur babies and also tend to feed and nurture a few local strays. I will use no one else. They are compassionate and sincere. The prices are comparable to any other vet I have been to but the services far exceed any other. They play a large role in animal charities and non profits as well. (I know this girl who had a cat who was accidentally in the dryer for close to 10 minutes. She rushed it to Noah's Arc. They saved the kitty and made this girls YEAR! Ah MAz Ing!)
