Delicious 'strawberry shortcake' as served at a Chocolate Lake Hotel wedding in July 2012.
    Lindsay C.

I will forever be grateful to the Chocolate Lake hotel family for making July 7, 2012 the best day of my life's journey thus far - my wedding day. Perhaps I've struggled with sharing a public review because I'm torn as to whether I want to expose this very unique and cherished Halifax venue as a best-kept secret. From the very first site visit, it felt like a cozy, tucked away place just beyond the city core and overlooking a gorgeous lake. The staff is incredibly personable, and they truly went out of their way to ensure our outdoor wedding was everything we wanted it to be. With 115 guests, this outdoor ceremony and indoor dinner/reception required organization, planning and heart. With rain looming over the night before and morning of the big day, I can say their staff cared as much about setup as I did.. and were watching the weather network by the hour until a final call had to be made. They never pushed, and pulled off a miracle to get the ceremony set up in dry weather. I honestly felt cared for as a bride - not a customer - at every moment. The honeymoon suite was amazing - the perfect room for a bride and her bridesmaids to prepare for the big day. With six women, a hair stylist, makeup artist and a few drop-in friends in attendance, there was still plenty of room. There's also a TV, an electric fireplace and a two-person pod-tub with see-through side walls. The guest rooms were also lovely, very clean and decorated nicely. Having parking included was a major plus for guests. Staff were very friendly in providing guests directions, and they always wore a smile. The ballroom and outdoor patio was perfect for guests to take a break and enjoy the evening air. The backdrop of Chocolate Lake was just a stunning addition to the day. After the festivities, we returned back to our room to strawberries and champagne, and a hand-written note from our event planner. They stored my items for a week while we were away in Jamaica, and I still keep in touch. Months later, I returned with a colleague for lunch, and a staff member remembered me and commented on my wedding photos. It felt as though they truly took pride in being part of my day, and I felt so lucky to have found such a place in which my family and friends had the time of their lives. I can't say enough wonderful things about Michelle Whittle and the team at Chocolate Lake Hotel. I would highly recommend their venue for events, dinners, weddings and dining experiences in their Lakeside Grill. It's been almost a year, and I always look forward to going back to visit the place I said 'I do'.

Nope! Using perfume for cleaning products is not my taste! Not a great neighbourhood and I won't be staying here again.

The Westin checks all those boxes--and throws in pet-friendliness for good measure. The hotel itself is beautiful, bright, and recently renovated. Well, almost everything. The fitness center requires navigating a peculiar elevator tucked away in what feels like a completely different building, as if the gym is in witness protection. But the rooms? Quiet, spacious, and outfitted with those signature Marriott down comforters that make leaving bed feel like a personal failure. The on-site restaurant is legitimately excellent--good enough that I eat there even when I'm not staying at the hotel. Breakfast is solid: the buffet does the job with a live omelet station and rotating options, but ordering from the menu gets you the real highlights, like seared duck frittata or what might be the best avocado toast in the city (smoked salmon, poached egg, the works). Happy hour is even better--dangerously so. My wife and I once ordered one of everything, assuming tapas-sized portions. They had to push another table over just to fit it all. The baos and mussels were standouts. The jackfruit? Once was enough. Parking is slightly odd--it's around the corner behind the building--but accessible via elevator, and conveniently shares space with the Hertz rental center. The building also houses a few independent vendors (spa services, boutiques, home decor consultants), though they're not formally part of the hotel. Location-wise, you couldn't ask for better: minutes from the waterfront, blocks from the city's best restaurants. A car here is optional at best. If you're Marriott Platinum Elite or higher, upgrades are surprisingly easy to snag, even during summer, unless there's a major convention in town. There are only a handful of hotels in the world I'd return to without hesitation. The Westin Nova Scotian is one of them. In fact, my experience here was good enough that it played a part in why I moved to Halifax.

Well, where do I begin:…read more The hotel is near a convention center - literally across the street. If you're going to the convention center and that's your goal for a quick commute this is your hotel. That was not my goal. It was a family vacation and we wanted a center location for our family to stay. The center location was fabulous. and the staff were friendly enough. Breakfast was fine (eggs, sausage, cereal, bagels, etc on the buffet area). The staff at the breakfast was more than amazing. Especially one waiter - we got there at 930am and several people were running up right before. and he was so good. Breakfast is included and it runs until 10 am. We opted for a studio bedroom with a queen and a pull out couch for our young daughter. When our daughter was pulling out the drawers in the kitchen we luckily realized the knives were in the 2nd to the last drawer to the floor. For the love of god - please move the knives to a higher drawer. Who puts the sharp knives in a low drawer? Sharp knives always go in a top drawer. C'mon people. We had no sheets/pillows/blankets for said pull out couch and had to run and track down a maid who was very gracious to us. We made her bed and thought it was going to be a great night. Well what we did not realize is that the hotel directly faces Maxwell's Plum. What is that? It is a bar with an outdoor funfest. It is loud and will keep you up way past a child's bedtime and then even your adult bedtime if you are one of the lucky guests to have a literal audience facing this. If you come here - I highly suggest you opt for a bedroom not facing this area. Secondly - do not opt for a room near the stairwell either - we had a double whammy. Music and the sound of the stairwell door slamming. Meant for a lovely Friday night. We probably went to bed around 12 or 1? Also it cost $25 to park. We couldn't get out of the parking garage for a while because several people were smoking right in front of the exit location. (Granted not the hotels issue directly but it just added to the fabulous evening we had).

Hearthstone Inn - The coolest our room ever got with the air conditioner at maximum and also using an additional fan that we purchased.

You can walk to Mic Mac Mall along Lake Banook, Robins Donuts and Main St. where there are many restaurants and stores. There is a pretty park on the lake also walking distance with lovely white geese wandering around. You can't beat having the Superstore across the road either so this is a great walking location. My only issue with this hotel is the lobby and hallways are not air conditioned so it was very hot and sticky until you got to your own room which is air conditioned. They have a daily free breakfast but I actually didn't feel very comfortable in the small quiet breakfast room... I wish it had been wider and accommodated more seating. I also wish it had individual jams as opposed to the jars because it seemed sticky and everyone was constantly touching the jars etc. Bigger tea /coffee cups needed too! Had to get my caffeine fix somewhere else. That being said husband loved the breakfast and it is free so I shouldn't complain I guess. Carpet in room was lumpy.. uneven needs renovated and old fashioned boxy tvs in room. No comforters, but bathroom very nice and furniture too. Beds soft. The staff here and very helpful and friendly. They stand right at the bottom of the ramp and stairs so you cannot avoid them. It stinks, makes you gag, and just looks tacky. If staff, then go out back. If guests, go do it in your car. If others, get rid of them. There is a sign that says no vaping or smoking near the entry, but you still have to get through the crap to get to the entry. Our other main complaint is the air conditioning. The first room had lousy air conditioning. Add to that the huge, sharp, crack in the window (running from top to bottom), a couple other problems, and we were not comfortable. They moved us to another room on another floor, and the a/c wasn't much better. At full blast, the fan didn't circulate well, and you could only feel the cold if you put your hand on the worn metal of the a/c unit. There was a thermometer in the room, and it never went below 75F. We ended up having to buy a portable fan to blow on me while sleeping. Moving around in the room made us too hot, so we rarely spent any time there. My husband, who gardens in 100F weather, even had a cold damp facecloth on his head to keep from sweating. Decorations in the hall and room were broken. The brown towels had bleach stains on them. The microwave was antiquated, and we unplugged it. The little fridge froze our water (although, I guess that could be a plus). If they were to put some love and money into this place it could really shine. We prefer supporting small businesses over major hotel chains, and we like the charm of classic decor, but between the over-heated rooms and smokey entry, we would not recommend this to many of our friends. Truly a shame because, for our needs, the location was terrific and, as previously mentioned, the staff was very nice. SO much potential.
