I had a very pleasant stay at Best Western Chocolate Lake. I could swear that I reserved a lakefront room but we were not given one when I initially checked in. The kind desk person got me a lakefront room even though the reservation didn't technically say so. They went out of their way to be accommodating and I appreciated it. The lake is beautiful and worth the stay on that side. Beds were comfy with lots of pillows. Body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are provided in the shower in pump bottles. Breakfast is included for hotel guests and offered a variety of hot and cold food options. The breakfast seating area is large, and there is an outdoor deck with tables if the weather cooperates. Everything was clean and the coffee was good. The pool area was clean and I had it to myself for most of the time I used it. There was an arcade on the same floor which I wanted to use (air hockey!) but I ran out of time. There is free parking and it was a short drive into Halifax. It's close enough to the city but far enough out to be quiet and relaxing. I would definitely return. read more

It was our experience that this property was an extremely poor value @ 305 $ Given that it's 20 minutes from the port / town center, i.e. to far to walk, 30 minutes from the airport ( no shuttle) and the restaurant was closed for repairs ( not mentioned on the website) and the bathrooms are the size of a postage stamp. We can't recommend this property ! read more

Really pretty hotel--No really! I was really surprised especially since I have never stayed at a Best Western before. We usually opt for B&B but this was a nice change. I didn't know what to expect. The hotel is right on the lake so that's really nice. They also have a really great hotel mascot: Coco the Chocolate Lab who lives there and is really friendly not to mention super cute =) The hotel is only a little over a year old and they had some renovation still being done. I think they are working on the fitness center and pool--which sounds great. The lobby was really nice, very well decorated and super clean. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and there was no line to check in. The staff also made some great recommendations for breakfast places. The room was actually really comfy and pretty large. Everything was spotless-- it looked like no one had ever stayed there before! The sheets very really nice, the bed was really comfy, even the pillows were great! Really simple and classically decorated room. There was an over sized bath tub which was great. In room fridge was useful to chill the wine. The hotel is about 10-15 min. drive to downtown Halifax. The price was worth the drive. The hotels in downtown Halifax can be really pricey in season. This was under $100 a night! Parking included and free wi-fi--Fantastic deal! This hotel is perfect for anyone looking to be close to the Halifax scene on a budget. Tip: Book through the hotel website for really good deals especially on the nonrefundable rooms. read more

I will forever be grateful to the Chocolate Lake hotel family for making July 7, 2012 the best day of my life's journey thus far - my wedding day. Perhaps I've struggled with sharing a public review because I'm torn as to whether I want to expose this very unique and cherished Halifax venue as a best-kept secret. From the very first site visit, it felt like a cozy, tucked away place just beyond the city core and overlooking a gorgeous lake. The staff is incredibly personable, and they truly went out of their way to ensure our outdoor wedding was everything we wanted it to be. With 115 guests, this outdoor ceremony and indoor dinner/reception required organization, planning and heart. With rain looming over the night before and morning of the big day, I can say their staff cared as much about setup as I did.. and were watching the weather network by the hour until a final call had to be made. They never pushed, and pulled off a miracle to get the ceremony set up in dry weather. I honestly felt cared for as a bride - not a customer - at every moment. The honeymoon suite was amazing - the perfect room for a bride and her bridesmaids to prepare for the big day. With six women, a hair stylist, makeup artist and a few drop-in friends in attendance, there was still plenty of room. There's also a TV, an electric fireplace and a two-person pod-tub with see-through side walls. The guest rooms were also lovely, very clean and decorated nicely. Having parking included was a major plus for guests. Staff were very friendly in providing guests directions, and they always wore a smile. The ballroom and outdoor patio was perfect for guests to take a break and enjoy the evening air. The backdrop of Chocolate Lake was just a stunning addition to the day. After the festivities, we returned back to our room to strawberries and champagne, and a hand-written note from our event planner. They stored my items for a week while we were away in Jamaica, and I still keep in touch. Months later, I returned with a colleague for lunch, and a staff member remembered me and commented on my wedding photos. It felt as though they truly took pride in being part of my day, and I felt so lucky to have found such a place in which my family and friends had the time of their lives. I can't say enough wonderful things about Michelle Whittle and the team at Chocolate Lake Hotel. I would highly recommend their venue for events, dinners, weddings and dining experiences in their Lakeside Grill. It's been almost a year, and I always look forward to going back to visit the place I said 'I do'. read more

I stayed here January 2012 right after a storm. My room was on the top floor and had great views of chocolate lake. The room was nicely decorated and very comfortable. It had a fridge which came in handy for yummy alcohol. The only bad thing was that nothing was located on the top floor: no vending machines, no ice. The restaurant downstairs served free breakfast buffet. It was surprisingly good. They had eggs, potatoes, cereal, pastries, whole fruits, yogurts and lots of beverages to pick from. Canada, like America only better :D I'd gladly return. read more

The Best Western is located right on the Lake. It is a fairly central spot in Halifax. The hotel has gone through some major renovations. All for the Better, it was pretty dated. The new meeting rooms located in the lower level are very nice. The staff here is great. It is a nice hotel, not posh but nice. read more

I've stayed at this property a few times in it's different incarnations over the years, and Best Western has absolutely done some wonderful things here. It's looks like the hotel has been completely gutted and rebuilt, to be honest. Very beautiful, very clean, with a lovely view. The price in comparable to everything else in Halifax, and for that it's definitely a steal. I wish I could comment more on the amenities, but we were in late and left early for the airport. The pool was nice (a little chill, actually, but no big deal,) and the fitness room looked great. The rooms were decorated well and we had a view of the lake. Free wi-fi a bonus, and it seemed pretty zippy to me. Everything was clean and fresh. It's exactly what you want in a hotel. read more

I will preface this review by stating that I did not spend long at the hotel, late check in and checking out early the next morning. However I did like what I experienced at the hotel. The room looked very modern, queen size bed, fridge and enough plugs for me to hook up my phone and tablet to be charged. The hotel had free internet on a wifi and it had a stable connection and reasonable speed. For people with children the hotel has a pool and while I did not check it out the kids that I could hear using it sounded like they were having fun. An added bonus they have a complimentary buffet breakfast, which had a good choice of food. In closing I would recommend staying here, good clean rooms and friendly polite staff. read more

My family and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Plus Chocolate Lake Hotel and it was a very nice hotel, this was our 3rd time staying at this establishment when we first checked in the manager was the one checking us in, he was very kind and friendly! Hotel is ok. Staff is friendly but there isn't much within walking distance. Bed was really firm and not comfy. Doors and walls not insulated well. One door with connecting room I hear a baby crying all night long. The front door I hear the "house keeping" knocking on every door. " LMAO" Anyways what are you doing in Halifax, NS? There is a pizza joint and subway closeby. Liquor store outside had its doors locked. Guy inside will buzz you in. That was a pretty freaky encounter. Stayed two nights here. The hotel has a difficult time parking situation. It was too narrow and congested. The room location feels like you are in a jigsaw puzzle. Weird architecture. Pool was decent. The rooms were good. Breakfast was mediocre. Front desk was helpful. Located 10 mins from downtown Halifax which made commute easy. read more

This was the venue of choice for my daughters wedding in Sept 2011. What a great choice. The front staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The banquet staff were amazing in the way they performed their duties. True professionals all the way....no matter what!! The ceremony was held at the waters edge and was set up beautifully by the hotel. The cocktail hour and then reception dinner was presented to perfection. The quality here is 5 star! We also had guests from other provinces and the US stay here for the wedding and rec'd positive reviews from all. This is a location/venue I highly recommend. read more

great spot! I booked a basic single room and they weren't busy, so they upped me to a top floor room overlooking the lake, which is gorgeous. Feels like you're out of the city but it's a short drive downtown. The rates are competitive with anyone - $107 plus tax for a nonrefundable room, $125 including a cooked breakfast. I ate at the restaurant and was surprised - had excellent Digby scallops in s butter and almond sauce, and a great Garrison beer. Service was super friendly. I get a sense prices are low right now as they have recently renovated and are bringing customers in, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're quite a bit more in a year. read more

Great hotel. Don't need a hotel downtown with all the constructions. Chocolate Lake is right there with a nice atmosphere. Just get on the bus in front of the hotel. For 2,50 per person within 30 minutes you are at the Waterfront. Perfect and would definitely stay here again. read more

I have stayed quite a few times because of its proximity to where I do business I love the location... Enjoy the lake view and the fact that they have a patio overlooking the lake. One server in paricular has my husband and myself come back because of what an amazing service he offers and a lovely young man. I think it would be awesome if the hotel invested in having the beautiful patio screened in with "window" type of tenting as one sees in down town and many restaurants all over the world. Throws and heaters will change the patio into an almost year round little gem. My only observation that I am not happy about are the front desk girls. Having to stay in many hotels it has become a pet peeve if you are greeted without a smile of some sorts. It always seems like an inconvenience to have them serve you. I have been here enough times and had interaction with them to remember me. But they dont. Just same old... No smile. Strange .. The servers all remember me and am always greeted warmly. If only they could smile and make you feel welcome, it would make this hotel perfect and I would give it four stars!! read more

This is quite possibly the cleanest and friendliest hotel I've ever stayed at, and I've stayed at a lot of hotels over the years. Great breakfast buffet, really nice saltwater pool (and it actually has a deep end, eight feet!). Because it was my wife's birthday weekend and we were visiting for the first time, they gave us a beautiful room on the top floor looking out over the lake at the city skyline (no extra charge). The people were so nice that I found myself doing double-takes, checking to make sure that they were really being that nice. I was stunned. That ought to tell you something about what we're used to! When a server at the hotel restaurant (who had never been to the States) asked us what our impression of Nova Scotians was, we couldn't help but laugh. How do you tell someone that their entire province seems like the happiest place on earth? In any case, our minds are made up: This is the only hotel we ever want to stay at when visiting Halifax. read more

I stayed here for one night for a wedding, but stay with Best Western on a regular basis. I woke up in the morning to water coming down through the ceiling from the suite above me being flooded. I had to check out early because of this and was extremely understanding despite 2 pairs of shoes being completely ruined. The counter staff was fantastic and agreed that I could go replace my shoes for an equal amount and that I would be reimbursed. I didn't ask for any additional compensation because I understand that these things happen. I went out and got shoes of equal value that were then on sale, so lower price than the shoes that were ruined. I submitted my receipt and to my surprise, received a cheque for only 50% of the amount. I called and spoke to Phyllis, the general manager who basically said, that's depreciation and there's nothing else she could do, that her staff should have explained it to me properly. She was extremely dismissive and provided no additional option. So I'm now out the money for these pair of shoes because of a miscommunication of her staff not explaining it properly. Very disappointing that they wouldn't take accountability and replace my property that was damaged in their hotel read more
