As I've eluded to in previous reviews, I'm active in the trade union movement. This means I travel around the country quite a bit and they put me up in some pretty nice places. I arrived here after a very long and boring journey from Glasgow changing first in Carlisle and then in Leeds. Going through the Dales with no onboard wifi and no machine to pay by card was pretty laborious- but I survived!
So I was greeted by a friendly receptionist when I arrived which was nice after a long journey with no one to speak to. All of the staff were really nice and helpful and they were fairly laid-back about us having guests in our rooms and also bringing in alcohol to consume in our bedrooms after the bar had closed. Which we didQ The decor downstairs was like you would imagine a hotel in middle England to look like. Floral carpets, wooden beams- the lot!
Went upstairs and the floor was a bit old and creaky. The walls were quite thin but I suppose that's to be expected in a hotel.
The bed was really comfortable and the room was a good size just for wee me. There was a good telly with a good assortment of channels. The shower was good too.
Breakfast in the morning was decent. There was a good selection of pastries on offer and other continental options such as fruits, cereal and yoghurts.
The bar prices were expensive, £4.35 for a vodka and fresh orange I nearly died! But I suppose that's only to be expected from hotels.
The Westminster was a pretty good hotel. A good solid 3.5 establishment I thought. Until I woke up on the Sunday morning to news that my friend/colleague went to his bed to find a naked man in it. We don't know quite how he got there, but I think it shows security is not great. The hotel, however, were great about it. They moved him to another room, reimbursed him and gave him a free stay in the hotel.
So, had it not been for that incident, this would have been 4*. read more
