On our way out the gentleman at the front desk offered to call us a cab for our pickup time to the airport and that was also appreciated. I'm Hyatt globalist and there were lemon cookies in my room. The breakfast is good. They have a buffet, plus you can order a hot item from the menu. One of the days my room wasn't cleaned, so I called down to the front desk and they said "was your do not disturb on?" That question annoys me so much. No it wasn't and I just want my room cleaned. They add a discretionary 5% service charge to the room rate, which you can ask to remove at checkout. I've never seen that before and didn't like it. I'm fine tipping as you go for service in the hotel, but 5% of the room rate is high. I had lunch in The Parlour and it's a cute restaurant and the food was good. My experience at The 40 Elephants was not as good. I was served right away and liked the bar snacks they brought out. But after I got my drink, there was zero service at my table. When I was seated, I asked if they serve food and they said yes, but then nothing. They were waiting on the tables around me, so I don't know what the problem was, but I never ordered food and just left after the one drink. I actually had a hotel credit to use and I didn't even spend it because that's how I was going to use it. That was the only true negative service that I had at the hotel. There was an automatic 5% gratuity on the bill and that was not deserved.

The typical check-in time is 3PM, so I was pleasantly surprised. Check-in was smooth. They mentioned two out of three of our rooms were upgraded without extra charge, but comparing my room to my parent's room, they looked the same. The only upgrade would probably be the free tin of biscuits from Cartwright & Butler. I requested to clean my room twice during my stay in London, but the staff would knock on my door each night asking if I needed anything. This level of service is something I haven't encountered, which exceeds my expectations. As for the room, it's a bit small. The rooms smell a bit musky in both my room and my parent's room. The bed was too soft and my body would sink into the mattress, which wasn't the most comfortable feeling. The hotel's gym was fully equipped with smart watch syncing features and water bottles. They had a rower, an elliptical, two treadmills, a weight machine, kettlebells, and dumbells. London is expensive, but if you want a convenient place to stay, Great Scotland Yard Hotel is a good choice.

It's also a 10-minute walk to the Victoria & Albert Museum and about a 15 minute walk to Kensington Gardens (a lovely public park). Lots of pluses. 1. First, it's a historic, elegant Victorian hotel built in the 1870s and restored in the 1990s. The nicest part of the hotel is the grand interior staircase. One plus is that an elevator (lift) is available if you're staying on the upper floors. 2. The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated with a small desk. However, the classic double room is quite small. I stayed in Room 137 (overlooking the tube station) and it felt like a studio apartment in New York City). If you don't mind cozy spaces, this is a good option for a short stay. 3. You have a simple temperature control gauge in your room next to the front door. If it's a hot summer day, be sure to turn up the A/C. In London, I noticed folks tend not to use A/C as much as in the United States. There were a few minuses as well. Given the small-sized interior rooms and bathroom (well-designed but tiny), I don't think it's great for families (with kids) or large groups. Also, at check-in, the hotel staff could be clear about the 50 pound deposit for incidentals, and explain that you need to put your key in the slot near your hotel room door to activate all the lights.

South Place went above and beyond to make our honeymoon special. From the moment we booked the hotel they made sure we were taken care of by reaching out to see if we need any reservations booked during our stay. When we arrived the receptionist walked us to our room and gave us a tour of the room. What made our stay even more special was that my husband emailed them the day before to see if they had afternoon tea at the hotel. They responded back saying that they did not have that on their menu, to which we responded - no problem at all! When we showed up to our room they had set up a special afternoon tea for us - everything that you would imagine (scones, clotted cream, jam, sandwiches, pastries, EVERYTHING). They even included champagne and balloons! I know they must have gone out of their way to put this together for us, and truly is such a memorable part of our trip. The hotel room was extravagant with a beautiful bath tub, bluetooth speakers around the room, dual shower head, robes, mini bar, AMAZING! We want to go back to London just for this hotel!

On the first night, the air conditioning in my room was not working. This was during the record hot weather in London in July, making the room extremely uncomfortable. The TV in the room also did not work, and the following day there was no hot water, meaning I could not take a proper shower. I also heard several other guests complaining about the same issues, so these did not appear to be isolated problems. I raised the issues with the hotel manager, Luca, who told me that he could not refund me for one night because I had booked and paid through Hotels.com. Instead, he offered me a complimentary night on a future visit to London. Hotels.com subsequently contacted the hotel and confirmed that the hotel would not provide a refund but would offer a complimentary room on a future stay. This is where the situation became particularly disappointing. When I contacted Luca to arrange the complimentary stay, I was told there was no availability. However, both the South Place Hotel website and Hotels.com were clearly showing rooms available. I therefore requested an alternative date, and was again told there was no availability. When I challenged this, Luca then acknowledged that they did have a few rooms available but said they could not offer the complimentary room. He instead offered a date when I would not even be in London. Hotels.com contacted the hotel again to request the one-night refund, and the hotel once again refused, while confirming they would offer a complimentary room. The issue is not simply that things went wrong during the stay. Problems can happen at any hotel. What is far more disappointing is how the situation was handled afterwards. Offering compensation and then making it extremely difficult to actually redeem that compensation, while giving conflicting explanations about availability, felt dishonest and disingenuous. For a hotel that prides itself on luxury and service, I expected a much higher standard of customer care. Unfortunately, the way this was handled has completely overshadowed the stay itself, and I would be very reluctant to stay at South Place Hotel again.
