The Old Otterbein Church was built in 1785 and is the oldest, continuously used church in Baltimore City. The church was founded in 1771, when a group of German Baltimoreans erected a temporary chapel for the German Evangelical Reformed church. The Church was named after Pastor Philip William Otterbein, a German immigrant. Old Otterbein Church served as the cradle of the United Brethren in Christ until the denomination was merged with the Methodist Church to create the United Methodist Church in 1968. The church is constructed of classic brick with a white trim tower (with bells brought over from Germany). The organ was installed in 1897 and is probably the last organ Henry Niemann built. The church also has an antique Bailey Chandelier. It sits very close to the Baltimore Visitors Center, Camden Yards and behind the Convention Center. Tours are offered for free every Sunday after the worship service. There is free parking available in the rear and side of the church - just go to the church office and get a parking permit.

Right from the very first service we were welcomed and treated like family. We've been attending now for a year and a half and haven't looked back. This is probably one of the most beautiful churches of any kind in Baltimore. It has an unusual…read morehistory, being that it has Byzantine architecture but was not built by the Greeks! It has a mixture of western stained glass and eastern wall painted icons (on the north wall there is a Resurrection Icon that is amazing!) The services are of course, Orthodox - ! Greek and English, with great Greek chanting and the proper solemnity, joy and respect that church requires. There are pews for those who are unaccustomed to standing all of the time, but those who prefer to do so will not be discouraged.
