After being active in the leadership at another church the past five years, God told me it was time to move on. So I gave First Christian a try. Life is simpler here. The grounds are almost as beautiful as the souls of those attending. If you become a Member, expect an email when you miss because they sincerely care about every member of the congregation. They are also very involved with the community and fully embrace that we are happier as people when we give. It took just a few weeks at First Christian Church and we met many new friends. There are activities and programs (educational and fun) for every age group. Children are cherished and members in this diverse congregation support each other. We've searched for a church home for a long time and now our search is over. This really is the most effective and loving church we've attended since we moved here from Ohio thirty-two years ago.

The church suffered through a split of sorts following the retirement of its founding pastor, leaving a small congregation with a facility a bit larger than needed. Fortunately, the church is free of debt and is rebuilding nicely through a solid core of longtime members. If you're looking for a nondenominational Christian church in this area of town, one smaller than Scottsdale Bible, CCC is definitely worthy of consideration.

The members are involved in a lot of things from mission outreach (in PHX and afar) to going on local hikes. The Sunday service is at 9 a.m., followed by what they call Adult Education -- that's basically a talk over in the parish hall, the subject of which varies from one Sunday to the next. Everyone has coffee and snacks first, though, and then enjoys the talk. Child care is provided for most functions. Architecturally it's a community center masquerading as a Church. The seating is arranged in a U shape around the elevated round table. I thought that Catholics " of a certain age" may have remembered being taught that, once having settled into a pew, time before Mass was meant to be directed toward mentally and spiritually preparing oneself for the great liturgies of Word and Eucharist. I must have walked in during the social hour by the sound of the chatter. As I looked around, I was struck by the fact that I couldn't find the tabernacle. I was reminded of the words of Pius XII "Christians will search in vain for the red lamp where God awaits them.... The only visible red lights were above the exit signs. The mass started and the servers marched in, some with their hands by their sides and eyes cast downward. The Confiteor wasn't said. No bells were rung during the consecration, nor was there any kneeling. If there is a loss of faith in the Real Presence, it surely isn't hampered by an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion wearing a "Best Dog Dad" t-shirt. The Recessional hymn was a clap your hands and sing along with a kind of Peter, Paul, & Mary song. By its website and social media, St. Patrick's seems to be a vibrant community. But for those visiting for the first time, you decide if it's a Catholic Church worth your time.
