My aunt lived here the last two months of her life. I visited 20 plus memory care facilities this…read morepast winter. Grand Brook was one of the first and I worried my aunt needed more activity and action during the day. I went with a different place and it will be one of the biggest regrets of my entire life. I moved my aunt to Grand Brook at the end of April. I was desperate and just didn't know what to do and not wanting to make another mistake I spend half a day watching activities and lunch. I kind of just popped in after talking to Mark, who works in community relations. He invited me to come check them out. I fell in love. The people at Grand Brook really do care. The front office staff are all hands on when needed. It's what I liked best. I loved that they jumped in and helped whenever needed. I spent a lot of time there and am regretful my aunt didn't get to live long enough to take advantage of the family like feel. The facility had a home like feeling. She had a large room with roommate and there is a living room area where they gather to watch TV. The dining area is right in the kitchen so everyone can see the chef and see and smell the food being prepared. They always made sure my aunt ate something. She needed a lot of help as the days went on. She wasn't there long, but many of the staff really fell in love with my aunt. There were 36 residents, but I feel like they really give a personal touch. They of course can have staffing issues, but I never felt like it was too noticeable. The CNAs work hard and are always friendly. I realized more staff is better, because they all keep each other in check. This wasn't true at our last place. Several of the CNAs cried with me and comforted me when my aunt died. I spend the last two weeks there 12 plus hours a day and so many of the CNAs would pop in to just check on us. We had hospice, but we didn't really seem them as much. When we needed to move Mark and Karletta, the head nurse went out of the way to help me get my aunt moved over as soon as they could. I visited April 19th and my aunt was in her new home April 26th. No one in our entire 6 month journey from her fall and break of her femur helped us like Mark and Karletta. I will be forever grateful for them. I wish we had moved sooner, but I was worried about making another wrong move. My aunt was just getting settled and enjoying her time. I never worried about if she ate or did she get a snack she liked. I knew she was being well cared for at Grand Brook. The facility has 36 residents. 18 on each side. The activities are on one or the other, but the activity director always made sure everyone was involved and helped people back and forth. I liked if my aunt had made friends she could dine on either side. Usually my aunt was so friendly, but she was really struggling with Alzheimer's and some agitation. But as she she got comfortable she became happier. She liked having new friends. The garden and patio area outside is just amazing. They work so hard and making it beautiful! We spend some good times out there. She loved it outside and I was so happy we had that time. My only tiny complaint was the wifi issues. But I noticed my cell phone didn't really work even outside. It's kind of a weird area. My aunt didn't spend much time in her room anyway. She just liked to have her Alexa and tv hooked up and we were going to look into something, but never got that far. I always made something play and so did the CNAs and that was good enough for my aunt. She wasn't as picky about what she watched later. A lot of family and friends came to visit at the end and everyone really liked Grand Brook. My sisters were amazed how nice everyone was. The CNAs at the last place wouldn't talk to us. They also didn't talk to my aunt. But we never had that issue at Grand Brook. They treated my aunt like a person. They treated us like family. I would never hesitate to have a family member live at Grand Brook.

When my grandfather arrived at the memory care wing of Meadow Brook, the staff updated me by email…read morethat he was happily pushing people in wheelchairs because he was doing so well. This was easy for me to believe, because he had done so well during his month at Greenfield Healthcare Center once released from a couple weeks at Community Hospital North due to an infection. But it was downhill from there--more than likely due to the facility's near-complete lack of memory care activities, its emphasis on apartment-style living that increases isolation, and its use of benzodiazepines/pharmacological restraint in general (something I questioned in particular that they refused to respond to unlike other facilities I asked). As my dad put it from what he saw multiple times in the memory care wing's (beautiful) day room: "They were all zombies who couldn't even hold their heads up." My grandfather fell 12 times (that we know of) in his month and a half at Meadow Brook. He developed acute encephalopathy, a subdural hematoma, at least one UTI and was sent to a psychiatric hospital to get his "meds figured out." Yet, he kept going because he had always loved life and had hope. Unfortunately, that hope was unfounded. His first POA refused to move him to another facility--even when Meadow Brook eventually urged her to do so once the Department of Health and Adult Protective Service opened investigations--and Meadow Brook never contacted his successor POAs when moving him was a matter of life or death (he, in fact, died last Sunday) and, therefore, superseded HIPAA regulations. After my grandfather's final fall at Meadow Brook, he was taken to the hospital yet again. It was one fall too many. The bright spot of this post is that I convinced his POA to release him to Allisonville Meadows down the street. Skilled nurses and hospice workers in Allisonville Meadows' memory care unit showed him the utmost respect and dignity during his final week and a half of life. If you're thinking of sending your loved one to Meadow Brook for memory care, please don't. Or at least educate yourself based on complaint records with the State and also tour the facility morning, noon and night at unplanned times. I gave Meadow Brook two stars only because I have no experience with its assisted living portion, which is where all the amenities are. Here is my grandfather's obituary. He was a wonderful man. https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/robert-meadows-obituary?id=53976750 Sources: Indiana State Department of Health report: https://www.in.gov/health/reports/QAMIS/ltccr/cr013163.htm Synopsis of Meadow Brook's initial plan for "transitional" memory care: https://seniorcare.levinassociates.com/2014/06/19/spectrum-opens-meadow-brook-senior-living-fishers-indiana/

We arrived at lunch and the dining room looked absolutely beautiful. The food smelled good and was artfully presented. We had great hopes for this assisted living community based upon what we had seen. However we were told by a sister spectrum community (Enclave @ Saxony) that the Meadowbrook community was not working according to the Spectrum corporate guidelines with respect to special diets. Our worry was that in the event that the current chef left, we would be left Spectrum corporate view on special diets which is not acceptable for us. (See our review on the Enclave at Saxony) This community gets four stars for their focus on meeting their customers needs. Should they be required to move to the Spectrum corporate policy I would change this to one star. Investigate your choices very carefully.

Please, do not send your loved ones here…read more Our experience with the Executive Director of the facility was completely demeaning. Raising her voice, talking over us, talking down to us, and telling us "that's not how business works". Zero empathy, which is unbecoming of a care facility such as this. By the time my mom left the facility, she had bed sores and her blood sugar was concerningly high. The staff was checking her blood sugar several times per day. Each time, it was extremely high. But despite requests and knowledge of the condition, nothing was done or prescribed to help with regulation. The condition was immediately remedied as soon as she left the facility and got the hospital, where she was properly treated. Communication was also inconsistent with some calls going to my mom and some coming directly to us, with no guiding policy. Likewise, responsiveness was an issue. Sometimes we were told we would get a call back in an hour and it would take a day. Sometimes, we wouldn't get calls back and would have to follow up ourselves. These responsiveness issues led to our family incurring incremental costs at move out. Despite a few wonderful staff members, our experience is consistent with others we've talked to.

This recently opened Assisted Living Community is designed to serve older adults with a full spectrum of services to help maintain independence. Parking was plentiful, and the grounds were beautifully landscaped with a gorgeous, enclosed courtyard with a well-built gazebo, benches, and a safe, level sidewalk wrapping around the courtyard. I was impressed from the minute we walked through the main entrance doors. Cozy sitting areas with lovely decor, the surprisingly clean, natural, fresh air aroma of the building, a warm and inviting dining room, several activity rooms for resident projects, various scheduled activities and trips to entertain the residents, plus more. I have a dear close friend with memory issues who recently moved into one of the large studios on the 4th floor. As I entered her studio today, I was extremely stunned at the amount of the open floor space in this brightly lit, living area from the two walls of almost floor to ceiling windows. The kitchen surprised me as well, with the large number of trending kitchen cabinets and countertop space in this functional galley kitchen. The bathroom was a comfortable size, and nothing about this studio felt small or cramped. In her living area, she had a cute, full-size sofa bed, a large, beautifully decorated curio cabinet, a desk and chair, a small bookshelf, along with a side guest chair. She brought a few of her stunning limited addition prints along with her new flatscreen T.V. to provide stunning wall decor and add her own personality to her new home. Even with these items, the space was spectacular and felt open and airy. I am very excited she has an attractive new home in a clean, safe, functional, and awesome community. I, of course, didn't see everything or speak to staff or nurses, but I hope to accomplish this on one of my next visits. Grant you, I realize this doesn't ease her pain of moving from her large, stunning, 2-story home in Carmel, or her joy of working in their well-manicured yard but in time, I hope the pain will ease. Hopefully, she will be back home quickly with proper therapy, medication, and doctor's care. If you have a loved one requiring assisted living now or in the near future, give Heritage Woods a call for a tour.
