In fact, after hearing a horror story from my parents when they retired about a CPA that did their tax return for a massive sum, I started having them send their info here and they now swear by Mark Rhode, Dave Schwan and their staff of competent accountants all while cutting their tax prep fees by about 60%! Pretty amazing when they live in another state and conduct their tax prep all by snail or email. For my tax prep fee, I receive an accurate, legal, and timely return, good advice, a fair price, referrals to other competent financial management professionals, and the ability to contact them throughout the year when various questions come up that might affect my tax situation. I don't get nickled and dimed for every question, phone call or email that I initiate and in the 2 or 3 years where there has been an IRS inquiry about a discrepancy, the Rhode, Schwan and Co. professionals have handled the correspondence and explained it all to the feds on my behalf. They are worth every bit of the affordable fee they get because the IRS has backed down each time and I am not behind bars. :) In fact, I am most impressed that they have never looked to take shortcuts or encouraged any type of behavior from me that would be frowned upon by the authorities.
