Been shopping here for decades but will now go elsewhere first. It's always been more expensive for most items but the customer service was worth the higher price. Unfortunately, the customer service has been declining for years especially in regards to knowledge. Last straw: they closed their bathroom to customers. I know this shouldn't impact a rating but sometimes an emergency occurs and the lack of a restroom ruins a shopping experience. read more

This is my 3rd time visiting this store. Each time I visit I'm very disappointed in the lack of customer service. This past visit was about 5 pm and walked in and ask the young girl behind the counter where I could locate a couple things. She did tell me it's in the garden center. I did look and couldn't find the items and when I looked for someone to help the older lady just looked at me and walked away to help a man instead. I then looked for another employee and another lady who completely ignored me when I tried to make contact. I really wanted a smoker bbq for a Christmas gift surprise but ended up walking out. I know these stores are privately owned and wanted to give them my business instead of Home Depot but unless they train their employees better customer awareness I won't be back. On my way passing through Oroville I told a friend I needed to stop at Home Depot. He quickly asked me why I would put money in the big box stores and not in local business. He told me about this place even though it was off my beaten path. I took his advice and as soon as I walked in I realized I was in hardware heaven. As soon as I walked in I found what I was looking for. A lamp cord. But something about a hardware store: you can't just walk in and get what you need and leave, you must walk around and look for things you don't need! And of course, I walked out with more than I came in looking for. But that's the beauty of a store like this. The guys that help you in the store are very knowledgeable and will point you in the right direction. Even though I live near Marysville and frequently travel to Chico, I will hold off my hardware purchases until I can stop here along the way. Good to see that Americana is still alive and well and small businesses will survive as long as we put our money in them. Shop locally! read more

I really really prefer to shop locally when its available and I really don't mind spending a little extra to keep mom & pop stores in business. However...apparently this place only sees you as a worthy customer if you have a certain appendage. I've shopped here now 10+ times and not once have I been greeted upon entering or even acknowledged until I request assistance. One caveat - the woman currently being trained in the paint dept - (Not Susan) - was extremely helpful and kind. I heard her helping many other customers in the store after she assisted me and she seemed to be helping many a people. I was looking for something in particular, only to be bumped into by the older male cashier without even a backward glance or apology. Checking out - the cashier couldn't be bothered with "how are you", "did you find everything", instead grumpily lamented about having to recheck all the scans because "this can't be right...who would pay $8 for scissors???". Dude...not your job to comment on my purchases. I have to admit defeat here and say Big Box Depot is going to win my business from here on out - it might be difficult to find someone to help there but when you do find someone --they are pleased to help and don't make a customer feel inferior based on gender. read more

Poor quality items for exorbitant prices. Bought 2 items for drip line after i installed them they broke i had to replace 35 dollars worth of drip. Never buy from them home depot has better stuff at a lower price and better customer service. read more

This place is everything that Home Depot is not. You can find plenty of people who can answer your questions and you can find that rare piece of hardware that Home Depot doesn't even know exists! I would hate to be the person taking inventory at this place because they must have tens of thousands of different items . Consider the fact that you're going to save gas and countless hours looking for that particular part, the slightly higher prices are worth it. Add the fact that you can buy just one screw, washer or nut as opposed to 12 you can actually save money at this place. They also have unique gifts that you might not be able to find anywhere else. This is Oroville's BEST little hardware store: they answer their phone promptly and answer questions! If you go to the store, they are helpful and knowledgable immediately. Every time! Their prices and policies are fair market value or better. This place is SO MUCH BETTER than Home depot or Wal-Mart or Tractor Supply. Especially if your time matters. read more

I like to shop local and I shop here when I can. Well I had a $5 coupon for an anniversary deal they sent in the mail. So I thought I would shop there for things I needed instead of Home Depot. I would pay a little more but i had a coupon and it is locally owned. Well when i get in the car i realize the guy at the register rang up $5 and then subtracted it so I did not get my $5 off. WTF. I will not be shopping there for a while. This really pissed me off. If I find myself in there soon I will bring my receipt and make them fix it. read more

Right off the bat, thanks DEAN! Often times, we visit the hardware store because we are in a situation where time is critical and we have a problem that needs resolution ASAP. I'm about 50/50 when I visit the Better Deal Exchange, thankfully. I started the simple task of fixing a leak in one of our showers. No problem right? Shut of the water to the entire house (everyone complains) and take the shower faucet apart. Get down to the nitty gritty part that was failing, pull it out and try to replace it with another part I had that should have fit, but alas, it did not. Now I'm stuck with the water off and a part that doesn't work. I'm about two and a half hours into this now, family's asking when the water is going to get turned back on and I'm stressing because I put the old part back in so that I can get the water back on and keep the family happy until I can get the new part. Apparently my messing with the old part made it angry because after I put it all back in, the water would not shut off in that faucet. So, I take everything apart again, pull the part back out and rush down to the Better Deal Exchange. Of course I am barely in the door before someone see's the part, points me to the aisle I need and pages someone to assist me in the plumbing department. If you've been to BDE before, you more than likely know what I'm talking about. It's a rarity when I don't get assisted by someone right off the bat. That's my first praise. Then in comes Dean to the plumbing department. I'm standing there looking at replacement parts that are running anywhere from $70-$100 for this piece of plastic with o rings in it. Dean grabs the part from me, pulls a small package off the rack with some o rings in it and says follow me. He proceeds to his office, lays out a blue towel and takes the thing apart, and I mean completely apart. I didn't even know those things came apart. Anyway, Dean proceeded to clean everything, polish the little metal plate inside, put the new rubber rings in, grease everything up and put it back together. This all took maybe 10 minutes. Cost of the parts with tax, $4.07, cost of my time in the project, a lot, and the cost of this excellent customer service? PRICELESS! This folks is why I shop at Better Deal Exchange. They don't always have what I'm looking for but they will do everything they can to try and help you get what you need. Bottom line for me and this review. I'm a customer for life. Those guys always go out of their way to help me and answer questions. Dean went the extra mile and took care of something that I could have done with a bit of verbal guidance on what to do, but he did it for me. What a way to make a guy feel like a valued customer. Thanks again Dean and I'll be seeing you again. Hopefully when it's not an emergency moment though. read more

What a GREAT group of people at this business!!!!! Customer service like you have heard of but never esperienced like this. And talk about advice on how to do things? THESE GUYS ARE THE BEST! I had a huge plumbing problem and one of their staff (Scott) spent an hour helping to solve the problem and build that solution step by step right beffore my very eyes - a customized solution to a really nasty problem. Forget the big box stores, these guys have actually done any project you can find and the advice and imagination they show is outstanding. I ended up spending about $50.00 to solve my problem but I figure that a plumber would have charged me at least $600.00 to a grand. Great store! Customer service goes above and beyond expectations. I shop here for anything I need for plumbing, electrical, and building supplies. The employees are so friendly. They greet you and immediately ask what they can do to help. I always bring in the old parts of my dishwasher hardware for example, and they find the exact parts and they always show you how to put it back together. They won't send you out the door until they know you are confident with the project at hand. Great people, great store!!! Love, love, love! The only thing they don't have is lumber. It's a smaller store not like the huge box stores. If they had lumber though I would never go to Home Depot! You will not be disappointed with this store... prices are also great. I bought a part that totaled a 1.06 and I paid with 2.00 and they gave me back a dollar and covered it with their spare change. Just shows how much these guys really care!! Great store. read more

I have gone to this hardware store many times and usually find the items I want and get good advice. I try to go there instead of the big box store. However, today I was disappointed in their service and their rain check policy. I brought in an ad they had sent out that was still current but the item I wanted, a dog bed, was sold out. I asked for a rain check. I was told they would not give me one, and the ad said "limited to stock on hand", so they had no obligation to honor the ad price. Apparently all their ads state that. The clerk seemed rigid and unfriendly. I would maybe have just gone away if he had offered an apology for not having the item or a rain check, but he did not. I think it is false advertising to not give a rain check. I went to Tractor Supply and got a dog bed for the same price as Ace, so I still give them 3 stars since they probably did me a favor for not issuing a rain check. read more

This business is the best in Oroville. I was having trouble with a swamp cooler and could not figure out the problem. Dean, at Better Deal was helping and had me call Glen Johnson, of Butte Elec. Mr. Johnson came out and fixed the cooler. The motor had worked so hard for a period of time that it finally quit. I took the motor to Better Deal and Dean took the pully off and put it on the new motor for me. God Bless this man. He did not have to do that for me. That is what I call Great Customer Service. read more
