A few days later Matthew arrived right on time with his crew. In addition to the branch removals, tree shaping and trimming, Matthew took the time to replace an old cable on our biggest locust that he saw was cutting into the bark with a superior cabling system. He and his crew were all so helpful, pleasant, and respectful of the yard and garden. Despite all the heavy branches that needed trimming, there was no damage to anything and cleanup was above and beyond. Eastside Tree Works is, by a wide margin, the best of all of them. The experience started before they even did any work. The salesman who came out for the estimate showed up with an iPad, walked the entire property with me, took photos and video of each tree, tagged the ones we discussed, and had a detailed estimate ready before he left. He clearly knew what he was talking about and took real time to talk through what would work best for the trees and the house, not just push a generic package. When he found out I was a military veteran, he knocked a nice discount off the price without me even asking. The crew that came to do the work was just as impressive. A full team showed up with a large bucket lift and worked through limbing up several big Douglas firs, doing conifer cleaning, and taking down two medium-sized trees. They moved like a team that's worked together for years, communicated constantly, and checked in with me more than once while they were up in the trees to make sure they were limbing to the height I wanted rather than just guessing. When I mentioned my chainsaw had been giving me trouble, they took the time to fix it on the spot. What really sealed it was the cleanup. After 25 years of tree work at this house, I've never had a crew leave the property looking better than when they found it, but that's exactly what happened here. Under two years ago (fall of 2024), we contacted three tree services companies to get quotes to…read moretop-off three arborvitae hedges and crown-reduce/windsail/shape two trees. We opted to split the work between two companies who replied. Eastside Tree Works is one of the two companies; they were hired to crown-reduce/windsail/shape a flowering plum and a katsura tree. I waited to write the review to see how the trees recover and regrow. The quoting and initial process was very smooth and professional. Their response is fast for both the initial meet-up and providing the quote. Everything was done on their iPad, and quotes sent soon after. The task was also completed quickly. The task isn't significant, and they readily came and finished. The clean-up details are excellent. When done, I observed the flowering plum looked shapely but the katsura looked like a bad haircut. They agreed to come out and trim a stray branch that stuck out compared to the rest of the katsura crown. The katsura never regained a normal tree crown shape. It still looks like a bad haircut will a divot, v-shape at the top. See photo. The flowering plum is growing perfectly well this new spring season. Their cost is competitive.

I am updating my review to address a quality report on my trees that I just received from the city…read more I stopped by city hall to inquire about the history of three very large, old trees on my property that I want to know how to protect. The city was able to provide me with a beautiful report that covered these three and several other trees on my property, complete with photos taken from inside my yard. The report included key information that I had sought when I hired a certified arborist back in 2014. The report from the city was dated 2015 or 2016, and had been conducted when our neighbors were doing a tear down and rebuild on their property. Yes, we had noticed back then that one day when we got home, several of our trees suddenly had metal ID tags tapped into their trunks and no one had notified us that they would be entering our property or assessing our trees. However, there was so much work going on with the construction next door and we confirmed later with our neighbor that the tags had to do with his permits and the city's canopy cover, so we were fine with it. When I read through the excellent tree report from the city, I noticed the name of the arborist was John Deutsch. I came back to this Yelp report to verify if it was the same arborist I had hired. It is! So, oddly, I did end up receiving from John (via the city and my neighbor's build) information on key trees in my backyard. I would have loved such a report for all of the trees on my property, and that's what I thought I had hired John to do back in 2014. So, my updated opinion is John Deutsch, certified arborist, is entirely capable of conducting and writing up assessment reports of trees. There must be some insider terminology, some key phrase that needs to used when hiring him to generate such a report, and I clearly did not know what it was when I hired him. Perhaps the difference was that I wanted the report for my own benefit, and the neighbors needed theirs to be filed at city hall? I don't know, but had I received a similar report from John in 2014, I certainly would have given him 5 stars back then on Yelp.

We agreed to pruning after a branch had previously fallen on my neighbor's house, so we wanted the work done responsibly and according to an arborist's recommendations. The tree is also classified as a Tier 2 tree under Seattle code (previously called an "exceptional tree"), which made it even more important that the pruning be done carefully and conservatively. Before any work was done, I hired an arborist to evaluate the tree and provide a report, which was referenced in the contract. Unfortunately, it became obvious afterward that they either never read the report or completely ignored its recommendations. The tree was massively overtrimmed and heavily underskirted to the point that it now looks mutilated. I am genuinely depressed every time I look at it. What was once a beautiful mature tree now looks stripped and unnatural. The company never communicated with us directly before doing the work and instead coordinated only with my neighbor while I was out of town. At no point did they review the plan with us, discuss the arborist recommendations, or confirm the scope of pruning before cutting. To their credit, they did provide a partial refund afterward, but it does not make up for the irreversible damage done to the tree or the distress this has caused. We hired professionals because we wanted careful, informed tree care -- not permanent damage. Extremely disappointed.

That did not make the cut for winning our bid. My father had his own tree company for years, Z Trees, I went with, helping, so I am a bit particular what I want plus one tree was on our neighbor's property and leaning over our roof. I do with that rate them very high. They are an arborists unlike three other companies bids. If you have big trees please do give them a chance to bid your job.
