This was by far the worst interview I have ever had. The recruiter I spoke - Megan - was very quick in turning me down and directing me to other agencies with whom I would be a better fit. She claimed that I don't possess the skills their clients are looking for. Seriously..How can you say that after a 2 minutes phone interview? Her "our firm recruits specifically for revenue generating positions within tech start-ups" sounded more like a "script" then an actual feedback. If the agency specializes only in tech companies, why isn't advertised anywhere on their website? She did not even glance at my resume, background or skill set which I frankly find very disappointing and shortsighted. Just don't waist your time with these girls, they seem to have a one size fits all type of mentality which is such a contradiction with the type of companies they claim to work for. read more

I moved back to the bay area after many years away and wanted to make a career shift from law into a tech or corporate position. I was paired with one recruiter who I never heard anything from. I would keep emailing to check in and would not get any replies. Eventually I found out she had changed roles, but only after I inquired whether I should look for a different recruiter. I was paired with another recruiter that was in touch for a few weeks. But again, she dropped off and I would send emails and not receive replies. That kind of information is really useful when you're trying to make a decision about where to spend more than 3/4ths of your time at a place. 2. The opportunities - the bay area is large. There are more companies than I can count and I'm sure thousands that I don't even know exist. Sit down with the team at Betts. Let me be clear, the recruiter I had worked with - Sonya - is amazing. She absolutely deserves 5-stars. in fact, the individual who had preceded her, Kemper, was top notch as well, but he was promoted (I believe). The only problem I had experienced with Betts is inherent to growing firms who specialize in order to scale. Because of this model, if I wanted to check out different positions, I wouldn't be able to work with Sonya nor Kemper anymore. Since Sonya had done such an amazing job, this made me reluctant to start over again with someone new. Although I was unable to source a position through Betts, I still appreciated their approach. Kemper did a great job prospecting me months ago, and transferred that information to Sonya. It's not often that a recruiter in the Valley will follow through on what they say they will, but their team has been very consistent, and they are much more personable than some of the other large recruiting firms in the Bay Area. They also have an excellent selection of companies to chose from, ranging from high-growth startups to large enterprise corporations. I was working at a large Software company in the bay but wanted to move to a smaller high growth and aggressive company. I reached out to betts and was setup with Megan Johannes. I cannot overstate how quickly the process was after our initial meeting and how dedicated and responsive Megan was throughout the process. I had a varied background that did not meet some of the normal standards companies look for but she took the time to speak with me and get an understanding of my skillset and not just go off my paper resume. She listened to my interests and set me up with about 5 companies virtually immediately. By comparison I was working with a recruiter from another firm at the same time and she only got me one interview and did not prep me (or the company) for it at all. Every company I met with through betts had already been briefed on who I was, what my strengths and weaknesses were, and why I might be a good fit for them. Within 14 days flat of meeting her I had 2 (high paying) offers from great companies that were then competing for my services. I also was in various stages of interviews with other companies that I had to turn down. The most difficult part of the process was telling one of my potential managers that I had chosen another offer. My only caution about working with betts is that you need to really be ready to make a move when you call.
