For kindergarten and most of my first grade year, I remember I went to Sherman Oaks Elementary. That school was fine, nothing special. For a few days I went to another school which I have forgotten the name of. But I remember - when I was a kid and joined Warner, my life changed for the better. The teachers were SO NICE TO ME AND MY PARENTS. The buildings here are much better than in any other public school. It's located in a great, safe neighbourhood too. I'm honestly starting to think that the negative reviews on this place were written by people who DIDN'T EVEN GO HERE... because my family experienced NONE of those bad things. This truly was a great experience, and as I move on to graduating high school soon, Warner will always be in my mind.

In my short time there, I met some largely decent parents and enjoyed being able to serve. Principal Linda Kaye-Crowder, however, is a duplicitous bureaucrat. Don't take anything she says at face value because she has two of them. She presents herself as a compassionate individual, but she is working for the system, not for your kid. She mocked one child's gender expression when she thought no one was listening. (But I was.) She would gossip about parents behind their backs. Part of this is owing to her age, the other is that she has zero leadership ability whatsoever. It's a STEM school where the principal doesn't do email, apparently. She only sometimes wore her surgical mask in 2021, so she didn't even conform to the rules set forth by the county of Los Angeles or LAUSD. There is no school security (which is more of an LAUSD issue). A rear fence was only sometimes secured. There was also asbestos in the walls as late as 2022.

I had one teacher that was so good she was my French teacher and she was so kind to me I loved her so much I believe her name was Ms. Levine but I really have a terrible memory when it comes to names. And she was about to be married, the other thing I remember is that she had very very long hair. I was new to the school in 5th grade so I didn't know anyone and that is hard for kids. This is another reason I loved that teacher, besides being an excellent teacher she took extra time with me knowing how I was feeling. I loved Beverly Vista and I think it's a great school I believe I was very lucky to have gone there.

I came here recently to attend a memorial for Mama G and it appeared as nothing changed since I graduated, and I mean that as a good thing. The school is at a beautiful location and I remember taking little hikes and running around the school and to the football field for PE. Also, I remember taking an AP Environmental Science course and smelling french fries from a car that runs on vegetable oil, which I thought was pretty interesting back in the day. I don't know if they still do that. Overall, I would say I had a pleasant high school experience and sometimes even wish I could go back in time and do high school again! Go Dolphins! There were a handful of great teachers who presented as what anyone would want in a teacher for their kid. The parent center is incredible and the woman who runs this program is awesome along with the families who are very relatable, kind and welcoming- made leaving this school mid year a devastating but necessary choice. We left because of my son's Kindergarten teacher, Ms. King. How this woman is a teacher is still a perplexing issue for me. Her tone with children is beyond intolerable. My kid was so happy to go to school, excited for learning, being dropped off by the Garden, his friends, then things started to change very quickly. There are several examples I can give that let us know he was not doing well. But this one sums it up pretty well, one day on our walk home from school he asked "Mom, do you think my teacher is mean to me because I'm not smart?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing, but also not surprised he picked that undertone up from her. After his pre-school years, going into her classroom was hugely difficult for our family. Witnessing her consistently rude, patronizing and sarcastic personality towards kids- I had no choice but to unenroll him from the school. It was barely 6 months into the school year. In addition, on the field trip, I sat behind her in the bus and heard her gossiping to a parent about another child's parent. The kid of the parent being gossiped about happened to be sitting right next to me and I wondered, did he know who she was talking about? Well, the kid said "you're talking about my Mom". He knew!! Ms. King then gaslights this 5 year old, telling him she wasn't, that he should "mind his own business". This is when I also figured out why my kid asked me that question about being smart. Her tone with certain children, who happened to know how to read, was clearly much kinder and softer, in her way of being those things. Children can read a room pretty well, they in fact are incredibly perceptive which I suppose could be called "smart". I literally walked to the office and un-enrolled him from this absolutely toxic learning environment after that field trip. My issue with the school is I know everyone knew what was going on with her. You'd have to be completely checked out not to notice. Everyone can hear Ms. King's voice, her tone and rudeness throughout the hall with her door shut, at the fence during drop off... and for this, I felt there was no need to discuss her behavior, which is obviously negligent and inappropriate for a classroom of ANY grade. In addition to this, she never took the kids to the Garden (at least during our 6 months there) for learning. Which I was told would be an extensive part of their sciences and environmental learning. After unenrolling my kid, I saw a parent, who was not from the same classroom but saw every morning at drop off- I was visibly sad. I let her know we were leaving. I said "it's just not the right fit" and she said "does not the right fit really mean Ms. King is unhinged?" So. Yeah, people know... My kid is finishing 1st grade now at another school. We are on still recovering from those 6 months.

Third Street is an incredible school. There are negative reviews on here from people with a sense…read moreof entitlement that they try to project on the school. It's one of the highest academically achieving public elementary schools in the city and those lucky enough to have it as their home school are truly fortunate. Getting in via a waiver is understandably difficult as a result, but possible as I can personally attest to. Fundraising is absolutely part of the culture at the school, but no specific amount is ever required. That's illegal at a public school. The school does ask for a donation of any amount that is "meaningful to your family," but that could be $5 if that's your situation. The school is in an affluent neighborhood so the largest share of donations are coming from people who can well afford it. All the cuts to public schools; art teachers, science teachers, physical education - that doesn't exist here because third street parents pay for them via donations. Teacher quality is high. There is a great sense of community and it's a diverse one at that. Every family has a different experience and I'm certain some didn't like their time at Third Street. As a whole however, it's unfortunate that there aren't more schools like Third Street, because a lot more kids should be able to benefit similarly to what the majority experience here. Ignore the reviews from the non-attending families. It comes across as nothing more than sour grapes.

My kids attended through the PALS program, and afterward they were supposed to return to their home school. I noticed that some students were allowed to stay, and from what I saw, many of those families were active donors. One of my children really wanted to stay. She was well-behaved, did well in school, and had no behavioral issues, but she wasn't given the opportunity. I never really understood why. I also felt that if you appeared wealthy, the staff--including the administration--treated you differently. They were never outright rude, but they often came across as dismissive if you didn't look like you had money. Many of the staff also seemed conceited and superficial, and it often felt like appearances and financial contributions mattered more than anything else. That was my personal experience. That said, there were definitely positives. The teachers were kind to my kids, and the campus is very clean and well maintained. The school offers more enrichment programs than many other public schools, has an active PTA, and provides a lot of opportunities for students. There are also many open enrollment spots, likely because many families in the neighborhood choose private schools instead. Since it's a Korean Dual Language school, I did notice that many of the open enrollment spots seemed to go to Korean families, which makes sense given the program. If your child has an IEP, I had a positive experience with the special education program through second grade. The support my children received was good. My only complaint was that the IEP administration changed every year, so we often had to start over with new administrators who weren't familiar with my child's needs. Overall, I think it's a good school with a lot to offer. My biggest criticism is that it often felt like families who donated, volunteered heavily, or appeared more affluent received more attention and opportunities than others. While my children had kind teachers and a positive experience in many ways, I didn't always feel that all families were treated equally.
