I never walk into a commercialized liquor store of any kind expecting greatness. However, this particular BevMo in La Mesa (an extension of Grossmont Center) has caught my attention more than once. The staff is quite pleasant and friendly, as well as impressively knowledgeable across the board. I usually know what I'm searching for, but every now and then I enjoy experimenting.
On my last particular visit I knew I wanted a dark liquor and had pretty much settled on a whiskey, but only out of habit. Luckily for me some assistance from an eager employee (easy to recognize in the red shirts) led me away from a bad experiment. After asking if he had tasted my potential purchase and knew it's characteristics, we ended up in a great conversation about favors, finishes, palates and preferences. As a former Wine Steward, I appreciated and respected his approach, explanations and suggestions. Not too much, not too little, just as much as I wanted from him. We settled on a bourbon he suggested that was similar in price to the more commercial known brand I mentioned some of my friends and I had an affinity for. (For the record, his recommendation was Buffalo Trace and it was perfectly received by the group later that evening). So good news - I'd probably listen again!
The best part about BevMo though isn't their liquor selection or the extensive choices lined up in their wine section. It's the famous 5-cent Wine Sale! Or...The Whole Reason I Am A Card Carrying BevMo Member (besides the in store discounts and the accumulation of points for purchases of course). The only thing better than buying a bottle of wine and getting a 2nd bottle for 5-cents would be for that deal to apply to ALL wines and not just the inventory management selected to qualify. It wouldn't be the ideal business model but I'd love it as a consumer model. Highly unlikely, yes, but I enjoy the daydream...It's always a bit of an intoxicating sale for me when I find a perfect bottle because I am absolutely giddy over a bottle of wine that I enjoy, find delicious, and can buy 2 bottles for $5-6 each (w/ discount). In this case, I stumbled upon a Crianza by Antano which made me feel like I was stealing from the winemaker ("Five cents?! Are you kidding me?! I don't care the first bottle is $12!").
It can pay off to try new varietals every now and again. Personally, I love the Tempranillo varietal. It's different yet versatile, but in a mass market palate kind of way. Spain definitely does it right. Call me crazy, but a lot of mass marketed Cabernet Sauvignon is like a Beyoncé song that won't get off the radio but everyone still listens to it and sings along. It's okay to try things and/or experiment with new Spirits and/or Wine...And with it's large selections of styles & variety, BevMo is a good place to find those experiments.
THE 3/2/1:
3+: Customer Service, Comprehensive Selection, 5-cent Wine Sale
2-: Store Cleanliness, Location requires it's own specific stop
1: Overall...This La Mesa BevMo has knowledgeable and friendly staff members plus a wide array of diversity amongst their Spirits & Wines with easily competitive prices, but it's better when you're not in a super rush so you don't become frustrated finding what you're looking for. (General rule of thumb for a quicker visit: Just ask). read more
