The La Mesa BevMo is one of the best. It has plenty of space to walk around, you do not feel like if you turn you will break something (Mission Valley location). They have the best selection of wines, spirits, and beers. If you are unable to find what you are looking for BevMo usually has it. Amazing customer service and great selection! Maria is a superstar manager who helped us get everything we needed for our big day. Bevmo is THE BEST choice for choosing beverages for an event. Even if your event is closer to another location Maria is the difference between a mediocre experience and a stellar one and will make your event a success. She was patient with us as we coordinated with her from two states away and everything showed up on schedule and without hassle. I can't say enough good stuff about this Bevmo - they really made what could have been a stressful time really easy. I was here recently to buy some beer and Kahlua. I found cordial isle and two employees happen to be chatting it up right near where I was standing. There were 3 different sizes & prices for bottles of Kahlua the first & smallest for 19.99, 2nd & medium for 29.99, 3rd was the biggest & highest priced. I wanted to know if the 29.99 bottle was double the size of the first bottle. It was on sale and I didn't have my glasses on. Here is where my experience went left.I asked the 2 employees behind me for help, the blonde female employee rolled her eyes like I was interrupting something intense idk. No problem let's move on. In steps Jordan. I ask,"Is this bottle double the amount of liquid than this one?" He then proceeds to slowly put his finger on the 750ml & ask "Is 750ml half of 1L ?" Then put his finger on the 1L.( For those that don't know it's the 2nd bottle is the better deal,but just barely). It was his tone and the pace and way his said it.If I had felt he was doing the math himself, and was taking his time to complete his conversions to himself I would have no problem. If he had just said "No it's not." I would have no problem. If I was shown any type of the customer service I had received there in the past I would have no problem.It was a moment for him to use his teaching skills to try and walk me through this equation the same way an irritated Dad would do to his son while going over something for the the 10th time. My GF approached right at that moment, so I decided to keep my mouth shut & walked to the cashier but I was upset at that very moment. In all fairness i didn't catch his name at the time,when I described him the cashier that's what she told me. Anyways support your local corner store & Ralph's & costco are cheaper. San Diego's 1st bevmo. It is actually on the large side and carries on average more variety than other county Bevmo's, not on the small side at all. They stock the largest selection of craft beer, both local and national/international, but they have lots of hard to find spirits, cordials, ingredients home bartenders use like apertif's and garnishes. Parking is weird and since it sits unobstructed on a hillside it gets some crazy sunset light. Staff is very helpful when you can find them as their walk in cooler area is humongous. I'm almost certain this was a former grocery store. Overall selection is great, peep the back craft soda wall for their sarsaparilla and root beer selections. All bevmo's lack actual bar equipment and high end tools, but it's sort of like party city in that regard. Staff is friendly when you can find them, displays are a little trivial, but they do have weekly specials and though some items are higher than competitors all in all your experience here price wise will show them to be cheaper in the long run. read more

I have frequented Bev Mo many times in the past. Usually before special occasions like dinner parties, birthdays or holidays. It is just a paradise for anyone that enjoys a cocktail, a glass of wine or beer. Specializing in the unique and hard to find. Bev Mo isn't the cheapest place to buy alcohol but they are the best. I am always finding new things to try. Last time I bought a bottle pint of Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout. Initially I thought it was a weird combo (peanut butter and beer) but ended up loving it. That is typically my type of experiences at Bev Mo. I find something new and amazing every time. Besides beer, wine and hard booze. They have all kinds of chips and crackers, dips and cheeses, nuts and deli meats. Great gift items for friends and family members. They even have a extensive cigar selection. When I come here. The cigar section gets bigger and better. I've just recently discovered my deep love for porters and stouts, especially of the craft variety. My husband would often come to BevMo for his craft IPA but I would wander around bored while he took FOR-EVER picking out what he wanted. I used to complain about how long it took him to pick out beer when I could walk over to the wine or liquor section and come out with my choice in a minute. Well, now that I'm in love with these craft beers I understand why it takes time. BevMo has a great selection of craft beer, both cold and room temperature. I love their descriptions of the beer and the recommendations. I wanted to limit myself to two pints, so I seriously switched my beer choices three or four times in the 30 minutes we were there. I wish they had a few more stout/porter options in the single smaller bottles, but they do have plenty of other beers in that size. There are always plenty of employees wandering around and they are more than happy to help. One word of caution, though: We noticed that not all the price tags matched the beer in its various locations. For instance one pint was listed as $8.99 in the fridge, $6.39 on the shelf, and $8.99 on the end cap. We asked an employee and she confirmed $6.39 was the most recent price. Also one of the bottles I purchased was listed as $3.99 but rang up as $4.29. For 30 cents I didn't object, but make sure to keep an eye on what's ringing up and what price you expected to pay. Besides that, between this place and my favorite liquor store down the street (Helix Liquor, ya'll!), I'll have plenty of delicious craft porters and stouts to choose from. Cheers! read more

The La Mesa Bevmo is great. I've been shopping there for years, way before Bevmo started branching out in the County. My wife and I were talking about, of all things, Czech beer. I suggested we go to BevMo and try our luck. As luck has it, there was one six-pack of Czech beer on the shelf, which I picked up immediately. Although we didn't ask for any assistance, neither were we offered any. Actually, the aisles are fairly self-explanatory, unless you are looking for a really niche type of beverage. However, the customer service was much better on a previous occasion when I was looking for a specific brand of Champagne, oops, I mean "sparkling wine". The staff was very helpful and I found what I wanted, which, lucky me, was on sale. All in all, a good place to shop for unusual adult beverages. In my case it says I've spent a small fortune keeping my kegerator stocked and that if I'm not careful my next Yelp review may be a 12 step program. I usually cruise in here with my empty and then head back to the cooler to peruse the keg selection. It's kind of random what they might have week to week but I can usually find something good. This was the very first BevMo location we'd ever been to. I remember when it seemed like this was the *only* BevMo in the county. Now, of course, they're all over the place. We used to drive out of our way to shop here, because of the selection and the great deals on all kinds of drinks, not just the booze. Plus, I love seeing the different food items that they have for sale - from the crunchies like chips and pretzels to the cheeses and sweets. The people here don't seem to be as friendly as I remember, or as the employees at our "local" BevMo. They weren't particularly busy the day we showed up, but nobody bothered greeting us when we walked in, despite the fact that there were two employees standing right by the door, chatting about cars or cats or something. In addition, we walked by a couple other employees on our way to find the booze we wanted, and not one of them acknowledged us or asked if we needed help. Not that we did (need help, that is), but it would have been nice to have someone ask. And finally, once we did get our items and headed to the front to pay, we were greeted by empty registers. All those employees that were wandering around the store had mysteriously vanished in the four minutes it took for us to get from the entrance to the racks and back to the front again. We had to actually hunt someone down to ring us up, which is never a good thing for me. It was nostalgia and proximity that brought us back to this location, but it's the lack of friendly staff and distance that'll keep us away. Aside from the large selection and good prices, this is the friendliest store in town! I'm not even a big spender but I get to know the clerks by first name and they get to know me. It's nice to walk in ANY store and be treated like an old friend. I even get hugs here! They go out of their way to help you and are very knowledgeable. Not too many stores carry Greek Retsina, which I love, and for a reasonable price. They've always got good beer sales and carry dozens--maybe hundreds--of those little airline size liquor bottles of everything under the sun. I like this place so much that when I had an extended stay in Arizona last year I drove miles out of my way to go to the one there regularly and it was almost as friendly as this one! If you can't find what you are looking for ask for Dave--he knows where EVERYTHING is. I feel lucky that this BevMo is so close and convenient. read more

This Bevmo is usually out of stock of a lot of liquors, but that is not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is their service. You are lucky if they have 2 registers open, no matter what day or time of day you go. They are so slow at the register it's ridiculous. They have 2 speeds there, SLOW and STOP! I have been to many Bevmos, but I use this one the most because it is closest to my house unfortunately, and it is the slowest one by far. You are almost better off driving further but getting faster service. read more

I haven't made it in here for awhile so when I got my paycheck I set aside 50% for bills, 4% for gas, and 46% for alcohol. I wanted to try some new beers and this holy beverage called "Chimay" that was so 2008 in the North Park scene was found here and sold by the bottle. At $5.00 a bottle this shit better be good. I didn't know "Chimay is an authentic Trappist beer that is brewed within a Trappist monastery, under the control and responsibility of the monastic community." (thanks website) That must explain the phenomenon that happened when I pissed in the toilet, lightning crashed from above, and the toilet water split in two allowing my piss to make it to the holy land. When the checker rang up my holy water she gave me a BevMo club card taking little of my personal info. I hate signing up for club cards sometimes because it feels like you are adopting a child or something. Now I have the club card that says I am a certified alchoholic in my wallet. My SO loves this store so much it's like a kid's love for Disneyland. He goes in and sees all the goodies and is mesmerized by all the pretty colored bottles, unique glassware, rare wines, beers, etc. He's like a kid in a candy store. I have to literally drag him out of this store. Too bad they don't have a section for women to peruse i.e., make-up, clothing and jewelry. Something fun for the women to do while the men shop for booze. That would be the only thing I'd change if I could. I've been going to this BevMo location for many years, mostly for beer. They have a very good selection no doubt, but rarely do they have any "real deals". For example their Racer 5 IPA is $21.99 a twelve pack is typical of the "Beer Deals" as sixes cost up to $11.99 in other stores and supermarkets. Costco has them by a long shot when it comes to their warehouse specials. For example a case of Stone IPA currently sells for $27.99 at Costco and a six pack for $10.99 at Bevmo. In other words you need to be informed on your Beer prices before you go to Bevmo because even local supermarkets undersell them on some beers. (See below) The good thing about BevMo is that they usually have everything in stock, but that's not much consolation for crappy pricing. You'd think a large chain like BevMo could undersell a solitary Supermarket like Windmill Market or a two store outfit like Keil's. I will say the store is well organized, large and they have good sized parking lot and location. It's clean and has a great selection. What I don't like about the store is the employees change working there constantly. It seems no one stays there longer than a few months and many of the employees have attitude and / or have no idea how to advise customers. Don't go there expecting any kind of professional advice. I've tried for beer, wine and spirits, and found that the best thing to do is to educate yourself beforehand by going to their web site and go to Bevmo with a firm idea on what you want to buy. I think with competitive prices and a professional staff this could be the best in town, but it's just ok. Bevmo needs help with marketing, sales and personnel management and training. Some examples below illustrate my point to check prices elsewhere before buying at Bevmo. I really don'y understand how a major chain can not only be competitive, but be so far odd in its pricing. I love this store... Great beer, wine and hard liquor selection and you can always find what you are looking for or a close approximation. I've found some great deals on wine here. Also nice assortment of munchies to choose from as well as specialty sodas in the non alcoholic section. One could spend hours browsing all the exotic liquors here, and the staff is always extremely friendly and helpful in making choices. Spoke to one of the managers recently about a hard alcohol I had drank years ago in Budapest and although they didn't have it in stock he knew what I was talking about and showed me a similar drink that was actually better. Also let me know that anything I wanted that they didn't have he could get in a week if it's still being bottled. Nice! For parties this place is great, especially if you are buying stock well versions of your vodkas, rums and whiskeys. You can pick up a handle of any for very cheap. Yes, you might find a $1 cheaper price at some grocery store for an on sale item, but for everyday prices and a selection you should'nt really even dream about, this is the spot!
