The park has gone from feeling like a 1950s campground to a true 21st-century RV destination, complete with all the conveniences you'd expect from a modern RV resort. The improvements are impressive: completely repaved roads, paved and mostly level sites, full hookups with 20/30/50 amp service, water, and sewer at every site. There are also plenty of spacious pull-thru sites that can easily accommodate large RVs and fifth wheels. The upgrades don't stop there. The park now features. WiFi, beautiful new restroom, and bathhouse facilities, along with new picnic tables and pavilions for day use. If you visited in the past and weren't impressed, it's definitely time to come back -- you'll be absolutely blown away by what they've done.

We had initially reserved a boat for Monday [5/3], but the weather was so bad and scary that we called and they allowed us to postpone until Friday [5/7]. It was a *beautiful* boat day! Blue skies, not a cloud to be seen, albeit a liiiitle bit chilly [not their fault!] and we'd forgotten our long sleeves! :( Grant checked us in, Jacob helped us with the boat [didn't catch the name of the gentleman who actually put the boat in the water with the giant forklift, but he was awesome, too!]. We did our annual Lake Tuscaloosa jaunt down to Sharpe's Landing and Rock Quarry boat ramp and back up to Tierce Patton Road. Jacob even helped get our cooler out of the boat in into the car!! You often just don't get customer service of that caliber anymore! Granted, they've ramped up the charge [$375 from $250 for the day] from the previous owner... But I *think* they're about to either upgrade the boat(s) OR give them a little more power [from 115HP]. They also have wet AND dry storage and perform maintenance/repairs on engines, but I have no experience with those aspects of this business.

We arrived at 6:30pm, which was after dark, and were told we couldn't camp because he had locked the gate. It would have been helpful if he had told me on the phone not to bother coming if we were going to be there 30 minutes after dark instead of saying "try to be here before dark". Jackson Lake Island is amazing, especially if you are a fan of Tim Burton's Big Fish…read more You enter through a gate, and there is an entire process for paying and then obtaining the gate code. Luckily, we paid, and were then calling the phone number to get the code, when someone who was camping pulled up behind us and put the code in for us. The small road bridge leading from the main land to the island was a little scary for me. Good thing there wasn't a car coming the other way, or I would have freaked out even more. This land is wonderful. I could see the appeal to kayak, fish, or have a picnic here, or even camp here. We stopped at the bathrooms first, and they are clean and provide running water. On our drive to the town of Spectre, we ran into the goats. We were driving down the road and all of the goats were coming at us. We put the car in park and enjoyed the goats. One goat even jumped up on my door to say hello. They are fabulous and very friendly. When we exited the vehicle at the Spectre movie set, a super friendly goat was charging at me, I immediately went into the car and the goat approached my boyfriend. All the goat wanted was some pets. And that's what he got. They are like large dogs. There are swing benches around the lake and it is nice to sit and enjoy the scenery. Watch out for goat poop. That is the only bad thing. The goats keep the island well manicured and provide the best entertainment and are adorable.

I visited Oak Mountain State Park as part of the Mammoth March Hike, fully aware it was going to be…read morea major undertaking--but it still managed to shock me. The steep climbs up and down the mountain were incredibly challenging. At one point, I even slipped and slid down part of the trail but thankfully managed to do so gracefully without hurting myself. Being from Florida, I was definitely not accustomed to the elevation gain I was about to face. There were plenty of moments throughout the hike where I questioned why I signed up for this challenge, but pushing through and ultimately finishing made it all worth it. Having the bragging rights to say I conquered this terrain feels incredibly rewarding. That day, I didn't notice much floral life, and most of the critters seemed to be hiding--likely due to the large number of people participating in the hike. That said, I was still lucky enough to spot a rattlesnake and a black racer, which made the experience even more memorable. There were a few noteworthy areas worth stopping for, including an open area near a dam‑like structure and several peaceful river and creek spots along the route. While the park is absolutely massive and I know there was so much left unexplored, the 23 miles I trekked over 9 hours was more than enough for one day. If I find myself back in the area, I might just dare to return and explore some of the parts of the park I didn't get to see. Truly a beautiful park and an incredible asset for those who live nearby and get to enjoy it regularly.
