Best hog dog in London? You bet! I have sampled a Big Apple hot dog on a couple of occasions and if different locations, but the most memorable was at Grillstock in Bristol. I was there for the weekend, so on the Saturday I treated myself to a 'Huge Pole' a succulent 8 inch beef & pork dog sausage seasoned with sage, mace and cayenne peppe, a real mouth fall, really delicious! Then on the Sunday we were back, my mate Dave was chatting away to the owner Abiye and the topic food challenges came up, then Abiye laid down the challenge, some guy had done a double 'Huge Pole' but someone needed to take it up a notch, yep, that guy was me. The Triple Pole: The deal was I had to fit a everything in my gob and have a bite, then I had to finish the beast and If I completed the challenge, the 'Triple Pole' would be on Abiye. Guess what? I demolished it with ease, and the main reason was the standard of those sausages, so tasty I manged three of the buggers and that's why Big Apple Hot Dogs is the best hot dog in London. read more

It's like this: The Man has a cart and sells hot dogs/sausages. This in itself shows that The Man understands. Hotdogs are street food and should be eaten on the street after having drunk more than you should have been allowed. Sauces and condiments should be added and spilled liberally on expensive trainers. It's the law. AND the hotdogs are very very good. If you're looking for the traditional hotdog- the Big Frank is the epitome. It's exactly what you want. If not, go for the the Big Dog. Damn good dogs, I must say! Lucky for me, Big Apple Hot Dogs sets up shop (tent + grill) quite close to my flat (they are on Old Street, near the Shoreditch Fire Station)...but today was the first day I made it over for lunch. Their hours say 12-6pm on the website, but they were closing up shop around 3pm, so I am not really sure that one should go by that. More like, if you happen to see them or are in the area...GO GET YOURSELF ONE. Don't make a special trip. My husband and I both had the "Big Dog" -- mine with onions, both with pickles. Unlike any self-respecting real Chicagoan, I put ketchup on mine. Thankfully, in London no one stares at you sideways when doing so. I like ketchup, so there! They have a nice condiment lineup, complete with sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, gherkins/pickles, etc that you do yourself. The buns were freshly toasted, perfection! At £10 for 2 dogs, it's certainly not "cheap" -- but they are very good. Worth a quick lunch stop. read more

Big Apple Hot Dogs is only open 12-6pm Tuesday to Friday, so I decided to work from home today specifically so I could pop down at lunchtime to try one of their famous dogs (it's also 20 degrees for the first time this year and I wanted to wear shorts...). Given the name, I was expecting something along the lines of a NYC Hot Dog - a guilty pleasure of mine every time I visit the Big Apple. I was surprised and at first a little disappointed that they're really not that similar at all - apart from perhaps the bun. But as soon as I took the first bite I realised that this was no bad thing! The sausages are big, juicy and very tasty. I had a the half beef, half pork, which was delish. It reminded me more of (excellent) sausages I've had in German markets rather than on the streets on Manhattan. It's a little more expensive than a New York dog, but given how big it is, at £4 I think it's a steal! I see a few more working from home days coming up over Summer... read more

There is a severe shortage of good hot dog vendors in this town, and luckily Big Apple Hot Dogs has stepped up to fill this niche. Now when I think of hot dogs, I don't imagine those hyper-processed spam-like frankfurters that you get at the supermarket in packs of 12, I mean a hearty full-bodied curvy spiced bit of meat bursting at the seams of its casing. Tuck it in a bun a few sizes too small and cover it in ketchup, mustard, caramelised onions and then you have a 'dog worthy of the name. Big Apple can provide just that. One of the Eat St vendors, the Big Apple stall can be found most Fridays at the London Street Feast and periodically through the week at Kings Cross. Quick tip...if you check in via the Yelp app you can get yourself a free drink! They have a selection of 'dogs but I went for the full beef traditional 'dog. Overall, I'd say it was pretty good. Maybe not up there with some of the offerings I've had in NYC and Chicago, but better than anything you can get here. After building it to spec (as described above) with the addition of some of The Rib Man's hot pepper bbq sauce, I proceeded to demolish it in just over a minute. The meat was juicy and full of flavour, the onions sweet and added a bit of crunch, and the sauces some acidity and spice. Yep, it was good. Be warned, if you add sauces it's going to get messy. Grab plenty of paper towel and be careful of your clothes as mustard stains don't suit anybody's look. One area of improvement - the bun. The first time my bun was decidedly average and I was left wondering if they decided to save some time and dough and just get generic hot dog buns. The second time the bun tasted a bit stale so I'm pretty sure the focus is on the sausage not the bread. Not a dealbreaker, but given the evident love and care that goes into everything else, it's a bit of a letdown when something as simple as bread isn't up to scratch. read more

While I worked this past summer in London, I made a point to go to as many food trucks and street vendors as humanly possible. This one, which I visited the day before I left, managed to top my list of favorites. It was a rainy day, but I was determined to make it there, and I'm so glad I did! My only regret is not visiting sooner and more often throughout my stay. First of all, Abiye is an incredibly nice guy. Though I'd only planned on stopping by for a quick bite, I ended up hanging out at the stand for a couple hours. That is not an exaggeration. For someone who has to hang out in the cold with little more than a tarp to protect him from the elements, the guy's chatty and kind to pretty much anybody who stops by. Now, the sausages themselves are to die for. They're handmade and come in several different varieties. My first choice was the "Big Frank" pork dog, but later went ahead and tried the skinny beef ones as well. Yeah, I had multiple hot dogs in one (admittedly prolonged) sitting. It happens. Both were fantastic, but I still think of the pork when experiencing London food nostalgia -- it happens more often than you'd think. The buns are fresh and fluffy, the perfect complement to the amazing dog. There's also a wealth of choices to be had in a spread of toppings sure to satisfy every palette, though I personally prefer to go with just ketchup. My only complaint is that it's so far away and I'm not sure when I'll be in London next. But when I get back, I know where I'm going for lunch. read more

I had the luck of trying these bad boys at Feast this year. Hot dogs always bring me back to summers in New Jersey with my family, so I wanted to get one with the right flavours. The Big Frank was perfect! I love that they offer all toppings for free so you can have as much or as little as you want. Sure they're a bit more expensive than the hot dog stands in NYC would be but oh well, supply and demand. I was really excited to see Big Apple Hot Dogs at the Street Feast. Somehow even though this cart is around the corner from my flat I just never have gotten around to trying it. We went all out and got the huge pole, 8 inches of the magnificent pork & beef blend seasoned with sage, mace and cayenne pepper and sitting on top of a nice toasty bun with caramelized onions.The dog was big and juicy. Wow, these were the best hot dogs I can remember eating! They're right when they say 'the best tasting this side of the pond', and they would have a seriously great run on the other side of the Atlantic. I'm from Canada, my wife from the USA (including a stint in NYC)... now that they have set up another shop in Chapel Market, a Sunday hot dog will be our new Sunday ritual. Big Apple Hotdogs are a traditional American Hot Dog Cart in London (Not to be confused with the traditional English vendors that sell old hot dogs by night bus routes in central London). There are a variety of different hot dogs on offer (Frankfurter, pork/beef combo, etc). They are all sourced lcoally using the best ingredients and served on a fluffy white hot dog bun. Found this little place after exploring near my work for new places to have lunch. Big Apple Hot Dogs is located at the lower end of Caledonian Road, just near the bridge over Regents Canal, and fairly inconspicuous in amongst the standard greasy spoons and off-licences found in the same stretch. Despite this, it's worth going the extra mile for, as the hot dogs are amazing. Fairly simple, no frills, you get a choice of differing dogs, a bun, onions and mustard or ketchup, all for a fiver or below. The dogs are well made, meaty and delicious, the bun fluffy and fresh, and it all makes quite a good meal with which to pop yourself down by the canal, and watch the world go by, as you make happy eating noises at the deliciousness of their wares. Alternatively, the establishment have a small roped off area out the front in which to eart, if you dare not venture far with your newly acquired hot dog. Seriously, if you're in Kings Cross, and want something decent, with no frills for lunch, make the trip up Cally Road - you won't regret it. read more

Now, I should start with the bad point. Big Apple Hot Dogs is less than a ten minute stroll from the office which means I eat here frequently. That's it. That's the only bad thing I can think of. Now for the good things.. First you have the staff, rain or shine Abiye and Jenny always have a smile on their faces and fire in their belly over the product they serve up and what a product because you guessed it, the dawgs are good, better than good! Take all your pre-conceived ideas of a hot dog and throw them in the bin with the Wrestlers, these dawgs ARE the bollox, whether it's a a Big Frank, Junior Frank, Big Dog or the all beef Pimp Steak Dog your taste buds are in for a treat. All the dogs are prepared to a 'secret' recipe by a Polish artisan and served up on freshly baked buns and can be topped with the obligatory onions and a wide array of mustards, ketchups, pickles, sauerkraut and if you're really adventurous, The Rib Man's Holy F*ck hot sauce! Throw in a loyalty card and it's no wonder I've had to up my gym intake to work off these babies.
