My confession, this was not my first trip to Crieve Hall Bagel Co. and I have no idea why it's…read moretaken so long to post a review. It's in a small shopping center at the north limits of the Crieve Hall neighborhood. You can normally find a parking spot in the lot or if you know someone in the neighborhood, walking is an option too. Walk in and order at the counter. Be sure to check the available bagels that day AND any specials, especially the cinnamon bun special. Every time I have been, the staff has been extremely helpful as you navigate the choices. (note - there is a separate window outside to pickup online orders, delivery orders etc. so that helps with inside congestion). There is almost always a line but it moves quickly. On my last visit, they had just completed the March Madness bracket and were featuring the Cheddar bagel with chive cream cheese- $1. As I said, always check the special! They will feature some interesting coffees, bagels varieties and let's talk about the Cinnamon Roll. The first time I sampled the Cinnamon Roll special it was a blueberry pancake version, imagine an amazing cinnamon roll(yes, it's sweet but not overly and has great flavor), with blueberries and cream on top! The only downside is they are very large, but that means you get one to share with your people. Their bagels are really good! You can eat them plain or get some spread for them. (note that bulk bagel orders are not sliced). They also have breakfast sandwiches. To top it off, this has the feel of a real neighborhood spot. Plenty of folks greeting each other, friends connecting, families gathering. Indoor seating with books for the wee folks and some outdoor tables too. I understand they have another location but this is original CHBCO. Definitely worth checking it out!

Unfortunately, this…read moreplace didn't quite hit the mark. that said, it was very busy, and seems to scratch an itch for many. Especially those under the age of 35. Having enjoyed great bagels over the years in Nashville, as well as on our travels to New York and other places, bagels in general in Nashville just aren't very good. We had high hopes for Crieve Hall when we found it, but our Takeaway evaluation was simply: meh.

If someone asks me "what's your favorite thing for breakfast", my answer is always "A bagel with…read morecream cheese". There is no other story to tell. I'm always on the lookout for a good bagel place. I discovered Bruegger's on a recent trip and decided to give them a try for brekkie. Bruegger's is easy to find and easy to access from Franklin Rd. It's got a nice storefront with some green awnings that came in VERY handy because my first visit was in the pouring rain. The inside is more function-over-form, as there's no real sitting area and it's not very brightly lit. You get the feel they want to do takeout...and takeout only. Inside you order at the counter. Bruegger's has over a dozen types of bagels including, of course, plain, onion, everything, etc. They have a Jalapeño bagel that's topped with cheddar and a few slices of pickled jalapeño. While I really like that style of jalapeño bagel, it makes toasting them a challenge. They also have about ten flavors of cream cheese that are made in Vermont and come in pre-sealed containers. They have some nice flavours (jalapeño! Oh, and plain, veggie, herb & garlic, etc), but all are pre-blended. My visit went smoothly. Less than 5 minutes in and out. The nice lady behind the counter took my order while the gentleman down the line sliced and toasted my bagel. (I prefer my cream cheese on the side so that I can control how much goes on it). They don't have a vast assortment of coffee options. No latte or espresso. The toasted bagel and the cream cheese were good, but I think I've gotten spoiled by visiting local (read that: non-chain) bagel shops. Pre-blended cream cheese has a vastly different look and taste compared to store-blended cream cheese. Bruegger's cream cheese is more than likely mass-produced by elaborate machinery, while a local bagel shop sources the ingredients locally and blends each batch by hand. For being a chain, Bruegger's does a fantastic job of bageling and cream cheesing, so it's really not a complaint but more of an observation. Will I visit Bruegger's on my monthly visits to Brentwood? Absolutely! I still love a bagel and cream cheese for brekkie!

The staff were patient and helpful as I asked questions and considered all my options. I had forgotten that they brew Nashville's own 8&R spresso!! Their 16oz drinks come with four shots - coffee lovers like me will appreciate the strength! Most of their syrups are Monin, I think maybe I saw 1 housemade. What really sets this place apart is the charming farmer's market-style vibe. Besides food, coffee and fresh-baked pastries, they offer their own delicious sourdough and focaccia loaves to go, and a very thoughtful selection of local items - like organic Amish eggs ($6/dozen - unreal price right now and I saw they reuse the cartons/place to return them - heartwarming), bone broths, small-batch sauces, and so much more. I loved spotting a whole shelf of Republic of Tea bags, sold individually so you can sample new flavors before committing to a full tin. You can tell everything is chosen with care both in quality and with a community focus. Franklin Bakehouse is one of those places that just makes you feel good the moment you walk in. It def helped to see and pet some pups too (I assume they are welcome as there were some inside when I arrived).
