My family and I were downtown last night for dinner and decided to pop into Big Brother Comics. Big Brother Comics is located on 20th and I Street, right around the corner from Tank House BBQ - parking can be questionable since it is Midtown though. I am not a comic book person, but I do like visiting and walking around like I know what I'm looking at. My husband is a nerd for comics so we popped in to see what new stuff they had. I liked seeing all of the cool interesting games, books and figurines. They offer so much at this store and the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly! My husband bought the Ultimate Spiderman comic and my daughter picked out a Teen Titans Go book - I think it came out to a little over $30 for both so not too bad. Pricing was fairly decent - you get what you pay for and depending on the rarity! They even have a large room with tons of tables and chairs next door for gaming with friends. Overall, Big Brother Comics is a pretty cool store! I'm sure we'll be back soon! read more

I've been to Big Brother Comics a few times now and really like the store. They have a huge selection of comics, games, and collectibles. The store is clean, organized, and the shelves are packed products. I always discover something new or unique whenever I visit. There's usually some street parking available in front or within easy walking distance. The staff is very knowledgeable about comics, games, etc. and friendly. They have racks of discounted first addition comic books from Image Comics near the front door. They make great gifts for a kid who is just getting into comic books. I had never spent too much time in a comic book store before, but Big Brother Comics was right next to a restaurant I stopped by with a friend. I was drawn inside by the promise of $1 comics and my own curiosity, and I was glad I did! The store is welcoming and promises lots to explore, from cheaply printed comics to board games and collectibles. I probably only looked 2/3 of what the store had to offer and could have spent ages in there. I was not approached by any salespeople, which is appreciated in this type of establishment, as I've had bad experiences with shop workers at other stores being pushy. I was left alone to explore and ended up getting some manga, a couple comic books, the free comic book day book, and a die. When I was rung up, the worker was friendly but not too aggressive. Thanks for creating a friendly environment for me to poke around! I'll be back! read more

went here for the first time to visit downtown sac and shop at a different comic book store i usually do. the workers there were chill and friendly. comics were brand new and carefully taken care of. ended up buying 3 comic books for $16 dollars which is not bad, will be coming back when i'm around sac again :-). read more

This is probably one of the better collections of board games - comic book stores we've ever been to. Very impressed with the amount of board games they got on the shelves. A lot of games I've never seen before so it gave me some very good ideas on what we want to be trying next. Pricing is basically MSRP for a lot of items. Some board games are actually cheaper than online. And some I couldn't find online either. They will also buy your old manga as well. They definitely have a good collection here. Saw two rooms for some card game play in the back and there's a bathroom on the premises. They greeted you and heard some very passionate conversations with customers as well so definitely got some knowledgeable folks working here if you want a recommendation. Probably can come back when we are in the mood for more games or to sell my manga read more

I came here for Magic the Gathering Cards and initially I was really content and happy with their stock. The store employees were helpful. The minus two stars is mainly because its kinda hard to look through when they keep all the boxes of cards behind the corner, which is totally acceptable. I asked to look through a box and they said "Its only for them to look through" which is kinda disappointing. I wanted to just look through the cards but they wanted me to tell them the exact card I wanted from the huge box of cards (boxes were separated by set) Other local game stores have boxes and binders you can look through at the front with employee supervision which makes the card hunt all the more enjoyable. I understand the reason why they do it that way, and the employee interaction was good overall still. read more

I love this store. I have family nearby in midtown and like to stop by here when I visit. They have a great selection of board games and comics. The staff is helpful. They have some great recommendations when it comes to board games. The prices are higher than Amazon, but I like the experience of looking at the games in person and talking to the staff. I had to come back and leave an updated review after my visit yesterday. Big Brother Comics helped me become "a reader". I wasn't much into reading but one time on my way to the farmers market ended up in this comic shop. Now, sadly Anthony is gone buuuuut luckily Wilson is still there. I hadn't been there is a while, like 6 months or more and Wilson still remembered me, talked to me like a person and not a customer. That's kinda the vibe here, family style. He also recommended me a bad ass manga, it's my first manga too and I'm excited about this!! Went in today after a few past bad experiences with other comic book stores. I'm relatively new to comics, so I've been trying to get into it more (and the last time a comic book store owner found that out, he turned up his nose at me). Walked in and was immediately asked what I was looking for, and when I said I was new to comics, Derek (I believe that was his name) and the other guy behind the counter (whose name I didn't get. Sorry G) asked me what I was interested in and made me feel welcome. Derek walked around the shop with me and gave me a truckload of information about where to start, where to go, and different runs that he thought I would be interested in. Bought a few X-Men books, and I've been very much enjoying what I've read so far. It was also really cool to see some of the vintage Star Wars toys in the glass cases (Blue Snaggletooth!!!) There are two factors that influence my decision on where to spend my fun money: good service and a passion for what's being sold. Big Bros has both, and I will absolutely be back :D read more

They have a great selection of current books, but like I mentioned before, it's not a place you'd come to search for vintage or even last year's books. They just don't keep that much in back stock. However, they have a great selection of games and graphic novels to go along with their new and recent issues. Plus, the service is great. Friendly and helpful, what more could you ask for? Great place for local magic card collectors, modern comic book enthusiasts, and games board players. There is scarcely any vintage comics, and zero graded comics. They sell sealed Pokémon card packs and boxes, but no singles. They do have a huge room in the back where people have Magic tournaments, which is great for community. I like that they have rare action figures for sell. Just get ready to cough up some money! Great place overall! read more

But there selection seems spot on, and all very well shelved and displayed, none of that rummaging through unlabeled cardboard boxes. They also have a huge selection of games, which is what brought us in - very novice gamers, they were extremely helpful, answered all our questions and made some great recommendations. They have much more variety to other game stores in Sac - which is greatly appreciated! Not only were the staff super friendly, so was everyone else shopping around inside. This happened a while back (around March 2021), but I wanted to share my story all the same. I've been trying to stop buying from Amazon and start supporting local businesses. Games cost more at the little guy of course, but I'm willing to pay because I want to support local businesses and I hate Amazon that much. I do my shopping at two places in Sacramento: Capital Books and Big Brother Comics. Capital Books is for all of my books and (I thought) Big Brother would be for all of my board/tabletop/hobby gaming. Capital Books also sells board games, tabletop books, magic cards, and comics, but it makes sense to buy books from them (because they are a bookstore) and hobby gaming from Big Brother. Right? Seems like a reasonable way to go about living and support two businesses. At least, that's what I wanted to do. I've bought a few graphic novels from Big Brother and had no issues. It wasn't until I started playing DnD and bought some playing cards from them. These are cards that each list a spell or monster or magic item for easy reference. My group didn't end up using them because DnDBeyond takes care of all that. So I wanted to return them. Please note: some of these card decks have been opened and used once. Some are unopened, shrinkwrap still intact. The man at the counter tells me there is no return policy. "Ok..." I say. And I understand that makes sense for certain products. If I bought a single-issue comic book, I could read it and return it. So no returns on comics or even graphic novels. That makes sense. That's reasonable. And no returns on board games unless the pieces are all there (board games these days are incredibly complex) or even only if they're not-punched from the sheets. Another reasonable alternative. But the man at the counter says no returns. Blanket statement, no exceptions. His reason? "When you buy a product, we immediately buy another to fill the shelf." This excuse stinks of bullshit. This tells me that the company is more interested in extreme short-term profit (locking in that sale) rather than long-term profit from loyal customers. Every customer returns something, surely, once in awhile, right? "Oh, this graphic novel was for a birthday and my nephew didn't want it" Sure, no problem, returned. Is there a chance I'm lying and simply read the book and want to return it now? Sure. A chance. But companies typically take this risk because they know the majority of customers aren't scam artists. But there's no return policy. Not for opened, pristine deck of cards. Not for unopened deck of cards with a receipt. Because they have to fill the shelf immediately. So I'm out of luck, fuck you guy, we got your $20. They got my $20 short-term. But they didn't get thousands more from me in long-term business from a loyal customer, so their business loses out. I really, really wanted to get off Amazon. I really, really, wanted to support as many local businesses as possible. I really, really, wanted to support a local hobby store. But they're not letting me. And sometimes these companies complain, "Oh, how can we ever compete with Amazon's prices? Oh, small businesses are hurting so much these days," (I'm not claiming Big Brother said this -- it's just a frequent cry). Well, you can have a return policy in the year 2021. That's a start. So now I do all of my hobby shopping at Capital Books as well because they are the nicest people I've ever shopped with. Thankfully their business is doing great, they're going to expand their gaming selection, AND they're opening a separate location as a gaming cafe. How cool is that? Yes please. In the end, I still go to Big Brother, though. Not to buy anything, of course, but to browse all of their excellent board games and then buy them elsewhere. Because fuck no return policy. read more

This comic store is the best comic store I have ever been in. It's so clean, so organized, and above all the people working here are just amazing. They have a TON of cool merchandise! It's totally worth just walking around and looking at the amazing selection of board games and comics and collectibles. We came here two weeks in a row and dropped $$ on Pokémon cards. Yes the are marked up, but meeting these guys and hearing that they have to be able to make some profit to stay open it's like take my money. I appreciate their help and their kindness. Entry into the tournament is $15 which gets you a set of bonus cards you then get to keep. I've had the privilege to shop at some truly fine comic shops over the years. I grew up in here in Sac in the 80's and 90's and there were a few rad shops over the years. I've been in comic shops all over the world and Big Brother is absolutely one of the best. It's an updated classic cards and comic shop. A dedicated, enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff. I would normally deduct a star for not having a classic Simpson's style Comic Book Guy, but it's 2023 and we're supposed to be all tolerant or whatever. But it's a legit, honest to bob, swear on Stan Lee, real comic shop with a staff to guide to excellent recommendations for yourself or gifts. Do not sleep on this place if you love games, comics, or manga. read more

It's horribly tempting living so close to this awesome store! There's a little of everything here: collectibles, graphic novels, actual comics with back issues available, munchkin editions and expansions for the addicted (me), other games, trading cards, Magic cards, D&D supplies (got my first set of dice here), and clothes. I shop mostly for me here, but also whenever I have a birthday for a friend or family member with specific taste. The owner is super cool once you come in more often and get to know him. I don't feel singled out as A Girl here at all and my questions are always answered politely. One time I thought he didn't have the new volume of Saga. Nope. It was at the front with extra copies. And we are so stoked that our airbnb just happened to be a few blocks from Big Brother comics! The staff and store are very chill and welcoming. The selection is amazing from comics to dungeons and dragons and board games, it's expansive and inclusive. They also do tabletop in the back room but I'm sure that's on a schedule.
