If you are, then you've probably heard him talk about Mardi Gras, going as a child, and how Mardi Gras in the US started in Mobile many years before New Orleans began celebrating the event. Mardi Gras is still a big deal in Mobile today, with schools, banks, government offices and most private businesses closing on Fat Tuesday. In my opinion, Mardi Gras is the best of the many things the Mobile Bay area has going for it. Fat Tuesday falls on a different date every year (46 days before Easter) and marks the end of carnival season. Carnival Season is actually about a month long. Some areas start the parades and celebrations before others. I mention this because many out-of-towners think Mardi Gras lasts a day or a weekend, and are unaware of its religious affiliation. Now, for the good stuff! Mobile, like many cities that celebrate the event, does have balls and parties geared toward adults. They also have many parades with floats, and huge ones at that! Revelers take home everything from beads and candy, to cups, frisbees and stuffed animals, to the Moon Pies that are unique to Mobile's Mardi Gras. The biggest of the parades are toward the end of carnival season and include the Floral Parade, Joe Cain Day, and of course, Fat Tuesday. Unlike many other cities that celebrate Mardi Gras, Mobile's Mardi Gras is family friendly. You and your children will be amazed at the events that make this event my second favorite holiday season. I even plan to enter my pup, Jazzy, in Fairhope's Mystic Mutts of Revelry this year. How's that for fun for the whole family, when even the dog gets to join in the celebration? SBF has origins dating back to 2005 but Alabama Coastal Foundation (ACF) became its official home in 2018. ACF is really a great group that focuses on coastal conservation issues. They're committed to addressing priority environmental issues throughout the region to preserve and protect our coastal way of life. I've lived on and around Cape Cod, MA, southern CA, and now retired on the AL Gulf Coast, and as a scuba diver, sailor, fisherman, and beach lover so coastline, as well as animal preservation is a really big deal for me, too. ACF has forged partnerships and alliances between business, government, and environmental leaders that work together on a variety of projects from recycling, sustainabliy, to water quality issues, restoration and of course, sea turtles. Education plays a big role in what they do, just like the event we hosted yesterday, at a local coastal restaurant, sharing with parents and their children all about sea turtles. They also have educational programs that connects students that interest, inform and inspire these future generations of leaders. Cool! I can highly recommend a great children's book written by one of my fellow volunteers, Linda Spangrud, "Miss Ella and the Turtle People" is a children's picture book about the protection, care, and conservation of turtles and about us volunteers, it's pretty cool. So I decided to return to give them another chance after my old housekeeper moved away and I tried other cleaning services but never got the cleaning I was use to. It ended up just to have them keep changing cleaner again but I was giving them a chance even after all the horrible stories I heard from the cleaners about the company. One young lady came to my house in tears because how she was being treated so I sat and listened but still gave company a chance. Then I get an email yesterday asking if I can change from my normal day and I responded saying I would try to accommodate and I went and moved things around after I got home ready to let them know I could make it work to find I received an email saying they are discontinuing service to me because they can not give what I needed. I have been trying to accommodate this company for months and I even got 4 neighbors wanting to hire them then I received a very unprofessional email no explanation or anything. I had already planned on leaving in a month my old housekeeper is moving back to Pascagoula so I was atleast going to stay with them and give them a two weeks notice I was leaving but I don't get that in return. Horrible and needless to say I have shared my email communication with my neighbors and they have decided to just hire my old housekeeper. So disappointed that I gave this company another chance. The young ladies cleaned well had a few issues but always gave them a good tip it's not the young ladies fault about the office issues. Also I found out the office tax their tips so I tipped them directly because I was never told I couldn't. Update after I requested an explanation I was given an explanation why they just stopped my service. It was much better than the first email that I received. All of the cleaners who have cleaned my house know I'm preparing for a very large party in a few weeks and to be told that the cleaning service cannot handle my cleaning at the last minute after I've already been scheduled for a cleaning is just very unfortunate but I do revise my statement. I WAS LATER given an explanation by the owner. The first person that contacted me was very blunt and did not give me a reason at all, so I requested an explanation and was given one. I would've respected them more if the person that contacted me after I requested an explanation was the first one to contact me because at least she explained why even though I still find it last minute because my cleaning was to be less than a week from now, I can understand if you don't have the staff to accommodate my cleaning schedule anymore. I would have rather that email being completely open about the sudden change than the one I received at first. I hope the company can get things together because I was all for supporting woman, and as a woman I just think after everything I should have just been given a little more notice. Wishing the company nothing but the best.
