    Captain Shannon's Swamp Buggy
    Dave G.

Captain Shannon's family has lived in southern Florida for almost 200 years. He comes from a long line of Everglades hunters, fishers and outdoorsmen. Shannon has wrestled alligators, piloted airboats, and given swamp tours his whole life and he has so many stories to share (not to mention a scar on his hand from a 12' gator bite). He really knows his wildlife and the natural history of Big Cypress National Preserve. My family and I were very impressed with the personal attention we received on our private tour. We started by going up and down the canal on Turner River Road, spying on alligators, ibis, herons, cranes, a live garter snake, and a tiny deceased rattlesnake. We entered the preserve and learned about the varieties of cypress, pine, and palm trees. We stopped in the middle of the swamp at a little camp for a bathroom break in a private tent. Then we had a fabulous surprise- we found fresh Florida Panther tracks, and Captain Shannon brought out plaster to make casts of the prints! These are one of a kind souvenirs of an experience we and our kids will never forget. Bottles of water are provided and we brought a bag full of snacks. The ride is a little bouncy but the buggy is smooth enough that my backpack did not fall off. This tour is a one man operation and Shannon takes very good care of his buggy. He always carries extra gas and tools in case of emergencies. The tour is definitely not cheap but you get what you pay for. You will see much more than on an airboat and since you are on land you can get off and stretch your legs. Shannon is very adventurous and offered to take my picture with a gator in the background. We were out for the full 4 hours and had plenty of time to just sit in silence and appreciate the solitude. You can also schedule an evening trip with a campfire and weenie roast.

I found Down South Airboat tours on Yelp and Google. Both had great reviews so I called the number…read moreon their website and booked a tour for me and a friend. Our tour guide Ryan arrived promptly at our meet up spot at 12:30 PM. We jumped on the Airboat and off we went into the Everglades. Ryan and his family have lived in this region of Florida for generations so he was more than familiar with the area. We saw baby alligators, lots of bird species, and in one spot, Ryan called the pond, he called out for alligator named Mother. She came right up to the boat and allowed him to touch her (scratched her on the back her head). That was an unexpected treat! We wore head sets to offset the loud Airboat and we could communicate as well. He stopped in several spots throughout the tour and turned off the boat so we could talk without the headsets. If you are considering a tour of the Everglades I highly recommend you reach out to Down South Airboat Tours and ask for Ryan. Happy exploring!

I really wanted to do an airboat tour and see the Everglades while in SW Florida in March…read more We pre-booked this company reading great reviews on line. It is pricey, we picked the 1.5 hour tour, just 4 family members and a guide, Ryan. It is nice that you can be with your group only! At the departing point there's a sign and a small parking lot! No restrooms! So use the facilities on the way at the Oasis Visitor Center, or drive passed it to the nearest gas stop! We were greeted by a staff member and signed our lives away! Bring a hat since you will wear headsets (heavy)- they didn't clean them after previous clients. I am not a baseball hat kinda of a girl but got one for this trip and it was a good save! Wear sunscreen and comfy clothes! Bring water and not lots of luggage, the boats have a small storage space for a few items. While waiting we did see a few gators and cool birds. The boat ride was fun, saw lots of gators in the wild and many birds. The landscape is breathtaking, other worldly. I wish we would have explored the channels in the back more. Ryan was nice but I expected better based on the review, somebody more knowledgeable and chattier. He sped us back way too fast for a pricey ride. If you sit in front you will get hit a lot but beautiful dragon flies. It doesn't hurt, but be warned. Since the reviews were so good I expected more from Down South. It wasn't bad, it was fun, but nothing extraordinary. Fun adventure, something you need once in a lifetime.

This company is…read morelocated in the small town of Everglades City and is appropriately named and easy to find. I did not make a reservation for my late January ride and was able to get on a boat only having to wait about 40 minutes for a seat. The lady behind the ticket counter was very friendly and accommodating. I could tell that this is a family owned business. Finally Captain Matt arrived back at the dock dropping off his passengers to pick up a new group counting 5 including me. Their boats are not large and can only take 6 passengers at a time. That's good because the smaller boats are faster and more maneuverable. The tour lasted 50 minutes and was a lot of fun. Every passenger wears electronic ear muffs that allow communication between the passengers and captain so that he can narrate certain parts of the tour. The ear muffs are also necessary because the airboat engine is loud. The engine decibel level along with the other airboats operating in the area doing the same thing means that you really don't see much wildlife. Maybe a few birds but good luck on seeing an alligator or big fish as the noise scares them away. Matt told us that the day before he saw a dolphin.... However the fun is the speed and turns the boat makes. At times we were going 35-40 mph going down the narrow water streets with vegetation on both sides and then doing turns in the open water areas. This tour was fun and well worth the $52 adult cost. They operate a few boats at the same time. I recommend this company and ask for Matt. I would go it again!

It was late in the day and we had tried to do some Airboat Tours earlier in the week but we were traveling with our dog and they were not dog friendly. We decided to stop just to check and luckily for us, not only are they dog friendly but they were doing one last tour before the sunlight was gone. Our guide Fabian was awesome. He was super chill but informative and really did a great job. Especially considering that is was late in the day and he was only able to find one alligator. He definitely tried a lot of spots and it was clear that there would normally have been more wildlife to look as so even he seemed a bit disappointed but he definitely made the most of the birds and other wildlife that we did spot. There was a second alligator and even a baby gator when we arrived at the makeshift village stop that we watched swim in the water a bit. I really liked that Fabian was upfront about the fact that the "village" was just a replica for tourists and not really a relic. He also joked that he has a TV and it is nothing like how native people live today. We had a really nice time on the tour but it is incredibly loud and we spent some of the tour putting our headphones over our dogs ears to protect her from the sound. The office workers warned us about the noise though and they were so sweet they even offered to let her stay in the office with them while we took the tour. I definitely would not take her with us again if we did another tour, but only because I worried about her little ears. She did super well with everything else, including the gator being so close to us and getting on and off the boat. We spent well over $100 after tip on the tour for two people and a dog and it lasted about 45 minutes but I really feel like the experience was well worth the price and the employees here were just so friendly and kind. I highly recommend stopping here and taking a tour with this company.
