Just a mere few weeks after 9/11/01, this city hosted its' annual Fall Festival, the Red River Revel. And during this particular year, the Gypsy Songman himself, Jerry Jeff Walker was to be headlining one of the Saturday nights. My chums and I, all huge, adoring Jerry Jeff fans, went to the show in full vigor. I myself, consuming what was pretty much my own body weight at that time, in draft beer, during each and every song, and after show's end, then venturing to a local tavern across town, where I would ultimately end up unconscious, and seeking the comforts, spread eagle no less, of said tavern's convenient outdoor parking, and the asphalt thereof. And this, only after regurgitating some of my stomach's contents into an empty pint glass, inside said tavern. Then there was July 4th, 2005. It was the night before my Father passed away. I sat in my Father's hospital room, and he, on his death bed. The television hanging on the wall, was tuned in to a local station, which was broadcasting live from this very park, for its' annual Independence Day celebration. And on this night, at this very sad moment, I remember sitting in that chair in that room, my Father resting, and looking up at that television screen, and seeing all the people, all the visitors to the park that day, families, and couples. As the camera panned the large crowd, hundreds, maybe thousands of faces. They all looked so happy. So carefree. Life was so beautiful for them. I was going through one of the worst times of my life. And then, down at the festivities, the recorded voice of Louie Armstrong, and his song, "What A Wonderful World" began playing. I could hear it on tv. My Father remained asleep peacefully. I just began crying. Of course, there are other memories of this park, less heavy, and not as important maybe. I remember another Red River Revel, years later. Where I jumped up on stage with local band Dirtfoot and showed all forward looking eyeballs my latest and greatest dance maneuvers, as interpreted from the music the band was playing. This delighted both my future wife and festival security immensely. There have also been countless enjoyable viewings of outdoor films here courtesy of Movies and Moonbeams. Recently, this park was deluged with waters from the adjacent Red River, and suffered extensive damage. In recent months, as festival seasons have come and gone, this area has not been available or open. It appears now that most, if not all, repairs, as well as planned upgrades, are now complete. Hopefully, this park will once again become the focal point of all activity and highlights during festivals, as well as day to day downtown recreation.

For anyone unfamiliar, this is the only diamond mine in the world open to the public where you can actually keep what you find. Some surprisingly large diamonds have been discovered here over the years, so there's always that tiny bit of hope that keeps you searching. What surprised me most was the layout. For some reason I expected caves or mining tunnels, but it's actually a huge open field where visitors search, dig, sift, and surface hunt. We paid $45 total admission for 3 people and thankfully already had equipment provided by our rental house (checkout Punkin's place in Murfreesboro, Arkansas on Airbnb) because you can absolutely spend extra renting tools onsite if needed. We started with wet sifting before moving into dry and surface searching. There were a few muddy sections from recent rain, but overall the conditions were great during our May visit. Slightly overcast skies with an occasional drizzle made the weather perfect for being outside. I honestly can't imagine doing this in the middle of a blazing hot summer afternoon. I had read reviews from people saying they left exhausted, but we approached it a little differently due to some back and shoulder limitations. We worked smart, paced ourselves, and still had a fantastic time. We didn't find diamonds that day, but we did leave with some beautiful rocks and a really fun experience. We would absolutely do this again!

There is a few different places to eat things like pizza, hamburgers, hotdogs, ice cream, all the regular suspects. 3 different sized lockers to keep your things in. And at $23 regular admission not to bad. People are friendly and helpful. Cons: There are no towels here at all for rent and the very small store that there is on premises has none for purchase. So you better bring your own or you will have none. Other than a few cabanas you can rent and a few small overhangs, there is not a single stitch of shade. Some other reviews had mentioned about rust, chipped cement and bad paint jobs so I had my eye open to that and sure enough, everything has 10 coats of paint on it and there are a lot of cracks in the cement and little bits of cement around in the swimming areas, including in the water that you will step on at some point if you are barefoot. While there are other things to mention if I wanted to be nitpicky, the last thing I would mention is that most of the slides do not have a lot of water and both me and my daughter left the park with skin burns on our elbows and ankles. (Let it be known that this was Sunday 05/22/16, the second day open of the 2016 season and it seems like if this place has been closed for 7 months for more that they could have had all these things fixed for opening weekend, which makes me think by the end of the season it will be even more tore up) To Sum Up: Still worth it if you are jonesing swimming and water activities, then this will cure your itch. Overall, you should have a good enough time here.

The lack of maintenance is apparent all over the park-- cement peeling off from inside the pools and lazy river, faded paint on just about everything, you can just see that this place needs MONEY! The wave pool is laughable, the lazy river I just wanted to get out as soon as I got in, and there are areas all around the park that are closed down. The main pool, lazy river, and wave pool are absolutely disgusting and don't look like they are cleaned out very often (if at all). There really isn't much to do here besides the big main slides and the larger pool. We don't like being out in the sun too much, so we stayed around 3-4 hours each time we went. There are no kids rates, everyone pays the same price for a ticket. So having one child unable to ride most of the slides because of her age/height, didn't seem fair to pay full price. (I have a 4 and 6 year old.) As expected with a Waterpark, it's being run by teenagers. The amount of give-a-damn is apparent how they don't really even pay attention when telling you to slide. Whether or not the last person that slid down is out of the way, they don't care. Most of the time you are asking them "hey, can I go now?" Because there hasn't been people down the slide in a long time. This place does have potential, but it's definitely not being utilized at this moment. I'd love to see someone come in and fix it up, it could be an awesome place!

We communicate using American Sign Language (ASL). We waited in a very long line with many other guests, expecting everyone to be treated fairly and given an equal opportunity to enjoy the attraction. While we were waiting, my Deaf friend got my attention and signed to me that two teenage boys had cut in front of her in line, along with another individual. I went over to see what was happening and observed the situation myself. It appeared that the ride operator knew these individuals personally because they spent a significant amount of time talking together while operating the attraction. The biggest issue was what happened once they were on the ride. According to the supervisor, experienced riders are supposed to be removed after receiving three strikes. However, these same two boys were allowed to continue well beyond that limit--closer to five to ten additional chances. Because they were repeatedly allowed to continue, everyone else in line was forced to wait approximately 10-15 minutes before the next guest had an opportunity to ride. When the supervisor arrived, I explained exactly what had happened, including that my Deaf friend had been cut in line and that the same riders were being allowed to continue far beyond the three-strike limit the supervisor described. The ride operator responded by saying he did not know they had cut in front of her. Based on what we observed, I found that explanation difficult to believe. I cannot say whether my friend was treated unfairly because she is Deaf or whether this was simply favoritism toward people the employee knew. Either way, neither is acceptable. Every guest pays admission and deserves to be treated equally, regardless of whether they know an employee or have a disability. Employees represent the park. They should enforce the rules consistently, stop line cutting immediately, and treat every guest with fairness and professionalism. No guest should have to spend extra time waiting because an employee chooses to give special treatment to people they know. I sincerely hope Magic Springs investigates this incident, provides additional training to its ride operators, and ensures that all guests receive the same fair experience in the future.
