We volunteer 24 hours a week for a couple. The bass fishing is phenomenal and the catfish are said to be the best eating anywhere in the US. I have stated in Rocky Point and Clear Sorings parks as well and for a senior pass holder at $19 per day you can't beat it. The park hosts a great to deal with and all bathrooms and sites are up to par. Malden park is my favorite spot for fishing because of its location and crappie fishing. The rangers are responsive to needs when an issue occurs. They have many pavilions for day use. We rented one for a church function and it was a huge success. The cost was $20 for the day. There is a working dam that keeps the water at required levels that anyone can request a tour of. If I were in this area I'd make this a 3-7 day stop. Texarkana has many historic sites to visit that takes about a day. Rodeo and church are big in this area. By the way it's a corps of engineers park, one of many we use regularly because of the low per night cost and all the amenities. And the sunsets! Quick look rating: 5/5 Quality, 5/5 Service, 5/5 Experience…read more For my 100th review of 2015, I thought it would be best to write about a great little trout fly fishing spot that's not to far from Dallas, TX. **To note: This review is written about the creek before the floods in early spring of 2015. In the spring of 2015 we had major rains and flooding in the area. The engineers for the dam had to release a large amount of water from the spillway. Downstream was a major washout. Spillway Creek is below the spillway dam at Broken Bow Lake. It is just a little over 3 hours drive time from Dallas or 20 to 25 minutes from Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The water released from this dam comes from about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down from the top of the water. This keeps the water released cold, cold enough for trout to live for the first couple of miles to about twelve miles worth of stream before it gets to hot for trout. The spillway is stocked with trout nearly every two weeks with at least two trucks of stock trout. The Spillway Creek is on the Ouachita National Forrest and Beavers Bend State Park, and I noticed that they are doing a great job of keeping this park and wildlife area, very well maintained! Help keep this park clean, what you pack/carry in, well then carry out, thank you in advance! At the time of spring there was two nice fly fishing shops in the area, while the Dallas has some really nice fly shops to help you out as well! Some of the Fly shops in Dallas have some guides that will take you up there as well! My thoughts / suggestions: 9ft rod - 4 or 5 weight rod, 9ft leader with a 5x tippet, take 5,6, and 7x tippet spools. Flies: RS2, maybe some tiny midge nymphs. Carry a wading staff! The water can be stiff in some areas! **To note: Check with the local fly shops for what kind of fly's to use and what types of tippet and leaders are being used at that time. **Emergency Note: Always listen for any sirens in the valley / creek area. When they release water from the dam, the engineers will blow that horn/whistle. If you hear it, head to high ground IMMEDIATELY! Please keep in mind where your fellow fly fishing buddies are located! For the most part there is phone reception in the area, but double check. It is pretty good idea to go to text mode when fly fishing and keep it on vibration/silent mode. Be safe, and let others know where you are located! I'll be back!

During the 90 minute boat tour, he was enthusiastic and passionate about the lake. He really seemed to enjoy sharing his immense knowledge the lake, both real and legend. I learned a lot and he made the tour very interesting. The day we went it was a bit chilly and overcast. It had just rained so the lake water was muddy, and therefore we did not see much wildlife, just a busy beaver and some blue herons. You can go during the summer when the water is clearer and see turtles and dragon flies. During the summer, the climate is much hotter and humid and there is little air flow on the lake, so be prepared to sweat. Cool and overcast actually was preferable IMO. The wife and I had toured the lake about a decade ago and we left from the northern part of the lake. Our opinion is that despite the fact that Captain Ron did a great job, the northern part of the lake is more interesting than the southern part where Captain Ron is now located.

I go here to trail run. The main walking trail runs out to the lake and is about two miles out and…read moreback. The lake views by the spillway are worth the hike which is entirely wooded so that helps tremendously with the summer heat. Its very easy walking and I've even seen people on motorized skateboards. There are biking trails also but hiking/running them is permitted if you go against the bike traffic. These are pretty hilly and narrow and you need to watch your footing and listen for bikers if you're on foot. The trails overall are a blast to hike and run. Depending on which bike trail you take it is two or four miles. Whether you take a bike trail or the main trail once you get to the spillway you can keep following the trail which runs through the woods, around the golf course and dumps you out onto University Blvd about a mile and some change west of the park. That route including getting back to the parking lot is about six miles. There is also back road I believe that gets you close to the spill way if you don't want to hike.

This place is out in the boonies, far enough where you can hear the nature and the wind whipping through the trees. I managed to score a great spot overlooking the lake. There wasn't really good access to the water where I was, it was a steep climb down to the waters' edge, but the spot was fantastically beautiful. It was covered in leaves but with lots of shade from trees still. There was a picnic table set up for us, a fire ring, and a BBQ grill. The park rangers were nice, and the place felt well patrolled. The showers were clean and the facilities were nice. I really appreciated camping here! There was so much nature- including deer and armadillos! I'd certainly return!
