First trip to the buffet, I tried the fried chicken (skin was a little too salty for me, but the meat itself was juicy and delicious), the hushpuppies (so crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside: delicious!), mashed potatoes with hamburger steak and gravy (soooooooooo good!!!), cabbage (good), Mac n cheese (soooooo cheesy and delicious. I could feel my arteries clogging, but that's how you know it is good), chopped bbq (tasty, but I would have loved a different bbq sauce, theirs is a little too vinegar heavy for my personal preference), and a sausage (soooooo good! I could have eaten about 50 of them!). Also had some potato salad and Cole slaw on the side that were both straight out of my childhood in Georgia. My second trip to the buffet, I had to get more mashed potatoes and hamburger with gravy, Mac n cheese, and hush puppies because they were awesome. Added some chicken and dumplings (yum!), corn (sooooooo great mixed with the mashed potatoes), as well as the peach cobbler (I wish the peaches were chopped smaller so they weren't so hard to swallow), apple cobbler (pretty good), and banana pudding (amazing!!!) I wish I had room for a cup of their ice cream, it was all those little cups but they had a bunch of flavors like vanilla, strawberry, chocolate and COFFEE! I'll save some space next time. Everyone we interacted with was super nice and the decor looks like every barbecue restaurant I've ever been in with pig decor everywhere. I really like that They used more spices than just salt. This is one of the very few buffets I've ever been to that. It was not just overwhelmingly salty I also really liked their waiting room for when the restaurant gets too crowded and you have to get put on a list. There was so much seating that I would not have been annoyed standing around waiting for my table.We did not have to this time, because we were seated immediately, but it's good to know that you have options if you're ever here during a really crowded time of day. I will say that the temperature was a little too warm for my likings, so even though a lot of the clientele of a certain age shall we say were very comfortable, we ended up sweating and feeling a bit nauseated by the time it was time to go because it was just so hot. Definitely going sleeveless clothes next time I come here. I cannot wait to come back and demolish their buffet again. It was all so good.

I met Joe DeFazio at his stand at the South of the James market, and boy can he talk a good game…read more He's from the north-east, moved to Richmond in the early 80s, and has been cooking italian food down here ever since. I think he used to have an actual restaurant, but now he just focuses on catering- corporate events, weddings, etc. He was at the market making sandwiches (which looked awesome, he was sneaking me pieces of proscuitto and arugula while he was making the sandwiches, and it was delicious!) and he had a few risotto balls and scotch bonnets ... I had never had a scotch bonnet so I tried it- turns out its a giant ball of sausage with a whole egg inside it! The sausage was really flavorful (homemade from what I could tell), though the egg was hardboiled inside and I like'um soft-boiled (although I am sure they are supposed to be hard-boiled) since they are sitting inside a sausage ball... but overall very tasty. So, would I talk to Mr. DeFazio if I had an event I needed catered? Yup. Will I visit his stand next time I am at the farmers market? Oh absolutely. I'll be the small woman ordering half a dozen sandwiches to bring home...
