Navigating car ferries between St Thomas and St John can be a bit confusing so hopefully this will help.
We got in line to board a ferry from St Thomas. We paid a $3 fee at a booth you pass as you move along the line.
Once past that, you begin to line up, right to left, backing into each slot. It's important you fill the most right spots first as that is the order they load.
They loaded a couple of truck first then started with the cars. Each car backed up on their own with some workers providing direction guidance. Not the easiest task. They are good at packing them in. You do not leave your car. In fact, you are so packed in, it may be difficult to even open your car doors so sit back and enjoy the 20-30 min ride.
As you are en route, someone comes along and gets money (cash only) for your fare. It was $65. There are options online to purchase round trip tickets. I highly recommend you do not. When the boat fills up, the next ferry that comes will likely not be the Big Red Barge. If you don't get a round trip ticket, you can simple get on the next barge and pay your fare, otherwise you are waiting quite awhile for the boat to unload and come back. read more
