Def read the reviews; a few people mention that in addition to things I also experienced and may affect your stay. Nothing terribly crazy, but there are some common 'dislikes' about this place: smoke stains on fireplace walls rude front desk service in need of upgrades pricey (I get that it's Big Sur) Having said that, though, we didn't spend much time in the room, there's so much to do. The location is, hands-down, the best. The walk to Pfieffer Beach was a fun challenge. You get a national park pass with your stay, too, so that's rad. The pool is great, the turkeys are great, and you're right in the middle of everything. This is by no means a spa or resort, though. I can't overstate how hot the rooms get during the day, and the AC unit did not work at all. Final note, there was crib in our cabin??? A crib. Ew. I appreciate that Big Sur Lodge checked in with me. It was cabin 20 of Big Sur Lodge; there's a unit under the window that reads the temperature, and there are arrows to increase/decrease it. My mistake if it's not AC. I agree that Pfieffer isn't really walking distance, only the young lady at reception told us it was "just across the street, then a mile hike down to the water," when really it was about a mile and a half north, then another mile down. read more

The 3.5 average rating from all the reviews don't quite do justice to the property. I agree to the fact that the experience depends largely on what cabin you get assigned. We were assigned #39 and it was a beautiful experience. That cabin can sleep unto 6 people; perhaps more but had 2 queen and 2 twin beds. The cabin was at the very end of the property, by the woods - a very serene, rustic and idyllic setting. The cabins have a sun-roof. I love the sun-roof. Rooms close to the pool or the pool pump etc - could be noisy and I would avoid those. Alexandria helped me make the reservations over the phone and also happened to help us at the front desk when we arrived. Both experiences were very good. Cheerful, polite and courteous. She gave us all the information we needed. They had the menus printed for most nearby restaurants. Made it so easy for us to choose. They happily gave recommendations and directions. They did not have the menu to Big Sur Bakery, and they immediately printed it out for us. Alexandria did not have the directions to Treebones Resort; so she consulted her colleague and made sure we had the answer. Swimming pool was heated and well maintained. There are nice trails close to the cabins in the state park. Inside the rooms: bathrooms were clean, toiletries were of good quality. Bunch of electrical sockets to charge your phones etc. It is amply clear on their website etc that they do not have WiFi internet. However we had pretty decent cellphone signal reception and could browse for reviews etc on our phones. We had a wonderful time and would come back if we are assigned a similar room. read more

We stayed here over the July 4th weekend the location is great with great trails, but totally over priced. We had the kitchen unit that costs $364 a night and the cabin is in great need of a major update. The kitchen unit was poorly stocked- we had no wine glasses or pan tops. Everything was mis-matched and I expected more for the price. The beds were horrible and very uncomfortable- woke up with severe lower back pain. Also the freezer ice/water leaked all over our food. The sheets in one of our beds was stained with blood. I don't mind not having WiFi or TV, but no phone is a bit too much. When we checked out at the front desk and reported the refrigerator issue, the lady just said "oh". She never said "sorry", or let me notify maintenance or anything. It seemed that this was just a normal thing. For the price per night they should consider investing some of it back into the units. I won't be coming back at all. I'd rather rough it by camping than paying that much money. Good things: Pool was great. Trails were nice and family friendly. Great location to other areas and lots of families read more

I don't think it's fair to give a positive review just because the lodge is in a beautiful setting. It's not Big Sur's fault. The room was large, but not very clean. There was fly splatter all over some walls. There were several dusty-looking cobwebs. Parts of the bathroom walls were unfinished plywood. Overall it came across as being cheap and poorly cared-for. We wanted a little getaway for a birthday weekend and we decided on the Big Sur Lodge, mainly because we saw that it did not have tv's in the rooms and it had no wi-fi either. That was cool with us because we wanted a break from that stuff. When we first arrived it was a cute little lodge-type place. The girl at the front desk was nice and helpful. Our room (probably all the rooms are like this) was definitely a little dated and could stand to have a few updates/repairs. For starters, the room was ice cold. There's a small room heater in the main living room/bedroom area. It takes a while to heat up the space and there's probably very little insulation in the buildings. Our unit had a spare bedroom (which we did not use) so we kept that door shut to keep as much of the heat in our area as we could. There was no heater in the spare room and the next morning it was probably just as cold in that room as it was outside! I can't imagine how anybody would have stayed warm in that spare bedroom. The first night was a chilly one but then the next morning we realized there's about a half-inch gap at the bottom of the doors and tons of cold air was coming in. Once we put towels in front of those gaps and the gap at the bottom of the spare bedroom door, it warmed up quicker. You do get a bundle of wood each night, so that was nice. The toilet/bathroom/shower could definitely use some updates. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had breakfast at the lodge and it was really good. Bacon/eggs/hash browns/toast.....it was good and hearty. A good start for a day of hiking. Even with the cold and the outdated stuff of our room, I didn't really mind it. My only real complaint would have to be this high pitched ringing that is constantly going on. Upon inspection I traced it down to the area where they park/charge the maintenance golf cart vehicles. It's like an electricity buzz or something and it was pretty loud. It would be nice if they could address that annoying sound. We paid $150/night but to be honest I felt like it was more of an $89-$99/night experience. read more

Do not stay at the Big Sur Lodge during a heat wave. The duplex cabin rooms are NOT air conditioned. The room we were given sat in blazing 103 degree temperature from sun up to sun set. The room kept cooking all day with furnace like heat that a large fan could not abate. Shame on the lodge management for trying to rent a room that they very well knew was not inhabitable. We had to have Rene Robles, the general manager, intervene for a change of room because the other desk clerks would not or could not help us. Rene finally did approve a change after we complained twice about the unbearable heat in Room 43. The new room was in a more shaded part of the complex and, though still very warm, the two fans we requested did help. We are thinking of filing a formal complaint with the Health Department against this establishment for renting rooms that are a health hazard during a heat wave. Big Sur Lodge must be a wonderful place in more temperate weather. The surrounding giant redwood trees and a great hiking trail that leads to a beautiful water fall are spectacular. Make sure to visit Purple Beach which is about two miles south of the lodge. Update on Review - The management of the lodge contacted me several times to apologize for the inconvenience suffered during our super heated stay. They were very concerned and offered to give us a free night stay the next time we returned to Big Sur. Since we were not planning to go back of a while, this compensation was not workable. So much to our sur-prise we found in our credit card statement a full refund of the charges. Now this is responsive customer service at its best. We changed our our initial rating from a one star to three stars. read more

Its really not that bad. Pretty pricey for just a basic room, but then, after calling 3 places with no vacancy, and some with a 2 night minimum on labor day weekend, this place serves its purpose for us. it was clean and somewhat comfortable. Restaurant feels homey, we sat by the window overlooking the stream. Breakfast was decent. We love the beautiful location. I suggest hiking the buzzard roost trail . Set reasonable expectations. Most of the accommodations in Big Sur are either camp sites, cabins, or motel - like lodging. This pristine, unforgettably unique and beautiful section of the California coast only stretches to far. The campgrounds, hotels, and cabins seem to have been there for awhile, and since new development could compromise the natural souroundings, I think they hold a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" sort of attitude when it comes to lodging. (Unless you choose to stay at the one of the two ridiculously expensive new hotels - which are right across the street from each other - do not expect basics like phones or televisions in this area). Its part of the charm, and it's so very charming. The Big Sur lodge is set right inside Phieffer Burns State Park. They have campsites, but I stayed in one of the rooms. Its hard to gage by their website, but the rooms are one story and attached. They are settled on a little hill above the park entrance and hotel lobby/store/restaurant. All rooms are in one area, surrounding by trees, with a huge swimming pool and lawn in the middle. It reminded me of Dirty Dancing, or some other 50's type family summer vacation spot. The room wasn't 4 star but It exceeded my expectations. There were two rooms, "green" bath products, a fireplace with a wood bundle and fire start kit, a gas heater, table and couch in front of the fire. It was cozy and rustic, and though a bit pricier for a room you may pay for elsewhere, It's the setting/ location that you are paying for. From my room I could walk to most of the park's trails. I was staying alone, and felt completely nestled in nature - but safe and comfortable. I started with the Phieffer falls trail, which was challenging and very beautiful. It started in a canyon of sorts, shaded by huge redwoods that follow along a bustling stream and winds you to the top of one side of a hill and back down another. There are a few wooden bridges that bring you over the creek,eventually leading to a viewing platform in front of a tall thin waterfall. I tried a few of their other trails likes Buzzards roost - really great to be able to walk from room to trail. I ate in the restaurant twice, once for dinner, once for breakfast. For dinner - local fried calamari with fresh lemon - a generous serving - and cooked well (not rubbery) and a salad that featured local vegetables and greens. Both were bright and delicious. Breakfast - standard - two eggs, one piece of wheat toast, bacon. The store near the lobby not only has food, beverages, (wine, beer, ect) camping supplies and general goods, they also sell gifts and trinkets. I loved my stay - though short - it was everything I wanted it to be and more. This area is very special and unique and I always feel so grateful to spend time here. read more

Yelp calls 2 star "Meh. I've experienced better", and that seems about right for our experience. For this price range (some $250 a night for fireplace room), we expected more. The room was a bit run down. Lots of smoke smell and the chimney showed smoke stains from prior fireplace usage with the flue closed. Blinds has some broken slats and other slats that were not in sequence with the rest (I fixed those for the hotel). The room is supposed to come with a bundle of firewood each night, but we arrived and there was no wood. Requires a drive to the front desk (no phones), and they gave us wood. Turns out we needed a fire starter also, as there is no kindling provided, but I got the fire going without. Wood was delivered the rest of the days. We stayed 3 nights. Before the 3rd night, the room was not cleaned by the time we returned from the day's activities at 3:30. I did catch a housekeeper, but he wasn't the one assigned to us. Plus side was he offered to clean our room right there and then, but we turned him down and said we'd go through the front desk. At the front desk, it appears that our room was marked as cleaned (but it wasn't). It was mostly cleaned by the time we got back from dinner. Expensive area, and this is likely one of the cheaper hotel options. But I don't want to spend $250 a night for cheap. read more

Not worth the high price! The ONLY reason to stay here is if you absolutely need to be at the trailhead for the waterfalls in Pfeiffer Park. $200 per night is robbery for what you get which is essentially a slightly spiffed up doublewide mobile home. The floor was uneven, the carpets old, it had fake wood paneling on the walls, there are zero amenities (phone, tv, clock, wifi) and the service was mediocre. Essentially the room is a box with a bed and shower for $200. We recently stayed at the Westin in Maui with a view of the Pacific and a rental car for $200 per night. Won't be staying here again. I would recommend staying in Monterey and driving the 40 minutes to the park or camping. read more

You may run across skunks, birds, and squirrels, raccoons, foxes, deer, mountain lions, bears and a lovely spring along the bridge. It's so beautiful for those who love nature. Ruchi loved the setting. But nature can be something not to trifle with. We stayed here to end our week of amusement parks, beaches and WIFI with a secluded and peaceful stay in this lodge. The air was crisp and clean. Rain thudded the roof of our cabin. We stayed in a two bedroom cabin complete with a shower, crib, fireplace and heater. The room comes with a parking space in front. If you have three vehicles, forget about it. there is no phone in the room, but you can bring your cell phone to call the front desk if you need something. other than that, turn it off. In the summer, you can enjoy a hike to the waterfall and in some cabins you can cook breakfast in your room and enjoy all of nature at its finest. It really is a beautiful and serene place to enjoy natures bounty. read more

Big Sur is a VERY pricey area. That said, our queen room at $204 wasnt bad at all. The cabin style room was very spacious and roomy. Yes the furniture looks dated, but this is a cabin style! The deck off the back door was very nice to have tea on but not private (rooms on either side can view each others decks). Room could use a fridge to store left overs and a microwave to reheat. Room does have iron and board. Hair dryer that pumps real hot air (should have tried it on my left over). Bath room has a good stock of toiletries which even included mouth wash. We didn't use the pool but it looked inviting. The grounds were beautiful. Tall redwoods and wildlife galore. If you come, bring some Summer AND winter clothes. This is on the Pacific Coast so be prepared for the weather. Tons of places to go hiking, bring good hiking shoes. The restaurant is great. Food on par with a three or four star. The staff is superb. Very friendly and attentive to your needs. I originally booked for just an over nighter, but was so impressed that we decided to stay a second night. No problem, didn't even need to change rooms. Would I stay here again? Absolutely yes. *************************************************************** Updated: We stayed in cabin #45 and had limited but useful cell service including internet. Found out just before we left (after I spotted the antenna on the roof) there is WiFi available. It is a private company so you need to pay for it separately. Since we weren't there for internet, who needed it. I forgot to mention before, the staff at the restaurant went beyond normal to make sure you had everything. The first dinner wasn't quite warm enough, so I asked them to microwave it. NO NO!!!! they made a whole new dinner! Remembering back, the one complaint I would have is the shower. The curtain didnt go all the way to the shower pan, so water came out all over the floor. Not a real big deal, but water tends to find week spots and can ruin the floor. We stayed at the Big Sur Lodge for our honeymoon. The location is great--you can walk to the store (small grocery items, souvenirs) and the restaurant and the trail to Pfeiffer Falls. The rooms are nothing special but they are perfectly clean and comfortable and located in the beautiful redwoods. The rooms are also off the road by a good distance so the noise isn't an issue at all. The price is pretty steep but typical for Big Sur prices. The hotel does not have WiFi and cell service is very spotty but who needs that when you have the great outdoors? The restaurant was nice. The food was good and the prices were better than other places in the area. The store had all of the souvenirs and snacks we needed. For the trails, you can walk to the Pfeiffer Falls trailhead and along the Big Sur River to the State Park amphitheater where they have ranger programs. Right outside our room, we saw deer and a wild turkey! Awesome location! read more

I thought this Lodge might be similar to Yosemite Lodge. It actually seemed larger and brighter. I was so impressed when we arrived to find the room was large and extremely clean. There is a porch with chairs to sit on for the spectacular view of the forest. They do not have TV or radio there and not even a blow dryer so it is for sure telling you to get back to nature. We took a nice hike up to the falls and made a loop through the campground which we found very beautiful. The Lodge cabins are quiet and the shower was roomy, clean and great water temperature/pressure. We ate both a breakfast and a lunch in the dining room and thought the food was excellent and reasonable. The coffee shop area offers lots of good food and ice cream. I think this place really get busy in the summer months and I am sure families love going there. I would return the Big Sur Lodge. read more

Sarah, that is in charge of events is SO rude. My sister was trying to block out room blocks for her wedding NEXT YEAR, and the women literally emailed her and said word for word, " I am not booking ANYTHING until August. Nothing is guaranteed. I just have you on a list to call you so you do not need to follow up with me. I will call you." My sister called August 1st, as she was anxious to get her rooms booked for her wedding. The women did not answer, so she emailed. The women replied back, "I have no other information for you at this time. You can certainly try other hotels if you need to do so. I understand." We were going to have an event here, with over 100 people, and block out rooms for several nights. My sister actually cancelled her wedding in Big Sur because this was the only place she wanted to stay and have the wedding. VERY, VERY disappointing. :( read more

I had a great stay at Big Sur Lodge. Beautiful cottage room. Shortly after checking out, I found that I had left a small personal article behind - just a cheap pen - a bit of memorabilia from a previous trip to Europe. Nothing of value and would not have been surprised or angry, had the cleaning crew disposed of it. Instead, I was delighted when the staff at Big Sur Lodge found it and mailed it back to me. Kudos to the team at Big Sur for going out of their way. read more

Word of advice, listen well....set the proper expectations with this place! When you tell someone you're going to Big Sur, most will think to themselves, 'Self, this must be a nice place we're going because it's Big Sur'... The website makes it look like a great place, really nice, with lights along the paths etc. it's not and it doesn't. This, however, is not the case with the Big Sur Lodge, we arrived late on a Friday night and walked into the cabin to find the temperature inside a brisk 40 degrees, it was off-season and apparently they don't leave the heat on or even turn it on in anticipation of your arrival. So, it's not the nicest place in Big Sur, but it also doesn't cost $1000/night (see: Post Ranch), so it's got that going for it. As long as you know what to expect, build a roaring fire, take advantage of the fact that it has a kitchen and is surrounded by amazing parks (which you get into for free if you're staying at the Lodge), this place is actually pretty great, rustic, but pretty great nonetheless. read more

The is a beautiful piece of property with hiking trails and ton's of nearby activities. The Big Sur Lodge is a small step. We had a nice room overlooking the pool with a wood burning fireplace, and full kitchen. Razing this place and build an updated property will probably happen in the next few years as this rare paradise is a wonderful piece of land. 3 stars to the Lodge ~ 2 stars to the Restaurant Lodge: Rooms are decent, spacious, located in Pfeiffer State Park grounds, so you can't really mess up the location and the awesomeness of outdoors. I personally enjoyed the fact that there is no Wi-fi or Televisions, (which makes or breaks some others' idea of vacation). Staff could use an upgrade, especially the lady who's name started with a S and ended with an A, could really have given us any less attitude. Restaurant: Pricey for what it is. All our burgers were wayyyyy way way undercooked. And also portions most definitely describe why 1/3 of America is obese. read more

Don't expect the room to be anything great. The cabins are definitely rustic. Our bathroom sink was very cracked. Internet was horrible, slow, consistently dropping or not working. I guess I had bigger expectations with it costing over $300 a night. If you're looking for off the grid this is the place. The heater works well but no air conditioning. We stayed here for the July long weekend this year. We had booked a cottage with a full kitchen at Big Sur Lodge, which was expensive(app 400$ per night) as expected for the holiday season but decent except for no Wi-Fi. Sucks! I had to go to Fernwood Grill restaurant for WiFi. The lady at the front desk wouldn't give a hiking map and asked me to buy it at the store. Come on, for 400$ a night, she could spare one(dollar)! I very much wanted to stay at this lodge, however after booking the reservation on the 18th directly through the lodge and not reading the hidden cancellation fee, 3 days later when I cancelled and the person told me I'd get a full refund, Big Sur Lodge gouged me for $35.00 cancellation fee. This was for a stay in June. This is very unacceptable and I caution anyone to go directly through Big Sur Lodge, rather Expedia, which probably would have afforded me a complete refund. I will never ever ever stay at this lodge and I urge any and all of you to give it wide birth! read more

Would not recommend staying here. The "free wifi" is not reliable (only in the main lodge - not in the rooms - and barely works even there), so if you need to do any work while there, would not recommend this hotel for you. Also, cleaning staff unfortunately threw away a custom bite guard over night, and the staff was not at all accommodating and quite rude in resolving the issue. Only book if you're looking for a better-than-tent experience I'm going up to Big Sur. Very disappointing as we had had high hopes going up initially. read more

Very happy to find a room here when all others in the area sold out and paid dearly for our lack of planning. would have been nice to stay longer but we found the hiking trails near the property to be very congested. Also the fireplace had issues and our room became very smokey. Beds were comfortable and bathroom was big and clean. Huge skylight meant you didn't need an alarm clock. Would stay there again if I could get a better deal on the rate. read more

We got ate the hotel after sunset. We didn't have too much options so we agreed to pay for the 309usd for a kingsize bedroom with a fireplace (what in my opinion is an absurd price for a logde, with no room service, no tv, no wifi). First they gave us room 24, they changes because it seems the housekeeper forgot cleaning it. They gave us the 58 (we got in the cabin by car and there were people staying in the room, literally!) came back to reception and they gave us a family cabin (two queen bedrooms that we didn't used of course since we were a couple). The cabin had no fireplace, no king size bad and no cutlery to eat out dinner that we took from the hotel restaurant to eat by the fireplace. We were too tired to get the car again and comeback to reception and we decided to eat (with the hand) and sleep. Next morning we talked with the manager and they offered a 10usd refund! Yes, 10usd!!! Half of what tipped for the dinner that I ate with my hands the night before. I have to say that the hotel is clean, the room and bed are confortable and the staff (mainly the restaurant staff) are really nice. read more

I WOULD NOT suggest any bride ever use this lodge as their reception venue. I wish I didn't have to give them any stars. I should have know from the start when their event coordinator Sarah did not find my wedding important enough to give me the time of day. I got engaged in December of 2014 and started planning and trying to talk to Sarah in January of 2015 for a January 6, 2016 wedding date. She informed me on a number of occasions that she did not have time for me because I was a 2016 bride and she needed to worry about 2015 brides. I would let things slide because I knew that i had a year. But as time went on and she refused to be responsive I started to get upset. The GM tried to smooth things over, but it turns out there is no one at that resort who is competent. We were passed through 2-3 other staff members before our event. They didn't get our room block together until June, when guest called to book in the room block most our guest stated that the front desk couldn't find our room block and they spent 20-40 minutes on the phone with the front desk staff trying to locate the room block and place my guest in the right rooms. We went in August for food tasting because we wanted a Taco Bar which was not on their buffet options. The food we tried was great. The food at our event was not. Plus an entree was missing and they ran out of food, and never brought more to replace it. we had 65 guest at our wedding. We prepayed for an open bar up to $2500 and requested only two types of beer and one red and one white wine be served to our guest. By 5 pm they had Already ran out of the beer we requested and they started just replenishing it with whatever they had. Which is not ok. When someone has an open bar and wants a specific beer, the venue needs to make sure that there is enough beer for at least that much money. They ran completely out of alcohol by 9, we had not hit the $2500 limit. Our event went until 930. Our reception was from 3pm to 930. Not ONCE in those six and a half hours did a manager, banquet captain or GM come up to our event to check in with us. It has been almost a month after my event and I am still dealing with them to clarify all the different charges on our cards. No Bride should ever be treated how they treat people, and no one should ever have to deal with the staff at this lodge. It is horrible. I wouldn't recommend them and we will never go back. read more
