Recently came here for a weekend get-a-away and I LOVED it! Was it pricey? Absolutely. Would I come here again? YES! I got to the lodge almost 4 hours before my room was ready but the staff let me check in early and gave me a pass to get into all the state parks, so that I could kill some time before my room was ready. Very sweet of her and she also gave us recommendations for local hikes. The cabin itself was so roomy! Everything was clean and there was wood provided for the fire place. The bed was also surprisingly comfortable! We didn't have any wifi but that wasn't a problem, we didn't really need it. Spent the night lighting the fireplace ( it was our first time making one, so that was fun). The location of the lodge is really what sold it for us. Everything was nearby and super convenient to us! We were able to go to Andrew Molera state park for a 8 mile hike and be back in our room within 10 minutes of finishing it. Changed into our bathing suits and in less than 20 minutes we were able to get into the river in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to relax our sore muscles. We wouldn't have been able to do that had we stayed elsewhere. The beds were also SUPER comfortable, which was a big plus. I can't say any thing about the food at the lodge since we brought all of our food. But the mini fridge kept our perishables from going bad and the ice machine was always full which helped since I used it to fill up our water bladder to keep our water cold while hiking. Overall the price was well worth it! We saved time since we didn't have to drive far anywhere, the room was clean, the views were amazing, the fresh fire wood was nice, working ice machine, and getting access to all 3 state parks was wonderful! read more

So this an update from my previous review. You'll notice the 5 stars. Oh and it'll be a gooooood reason it is. Moving on. This review is for room 9. Which has a fireplace and two queen beds with two rooms and a living room area. They make you feel VERY welcomed here. The staff is absolutely OUTSTANDING. The rooms are updated, very clean and very well taken care of. I will also be writing a review on their restaurant. But this one is about the lodge/rooms. Upon walking up to the door of the room I noticed the deck was well maintained. Walking into the room it took me by surprise right away that it was VERY clean and well maintained. The room had a coffee maker, one sink, no bathtub but a great shower. The shower works well, the water is hot and the pressure of the water is great. The fireplace was clean and ready for the next guests. The beds were all fresh. I took the blankets off and inspected them to make sure there was no bed bugs or anything else. They were clean. The floors were vacuumed. Even under the beds had no dust or anything. Oddly I felt like it was TO nice if that's such a thing. But in Big Sur you're sort of use to the rustic cabin in the woods type of feel. And I'm 100% fine with that. I come here to be apart of nature and enjoy the scenery, the sound of the trees with the wind and the stream. It also might be the fact that we got very lucky on how not busy it was. There was absolutely 0 people staying anywhere near us. And I do believe that helped A LOT with how quiet it was and how nice our stay was. Had it been different with a full house of people I don't think I would of had such a good time. Overall though I will say this. The staff here has gotten MUCH better. The kindness and professionalism displayed by them is at the out most highest regard I can say from what it previously was. There was 3 staff members I remember by name in particular. Ashley. Which was a server in the restaurant that I will speak about in my updated review for the restaurant separate from this. Don't worry, everything about this server was good. Ernesto. He seems to take care of the rooms, maintenance, trash and well overall... a little bit of everything. He had an excellent attitude towards us as guests and a good vibe. His wife also works here to and she's a wonderful person as well. Would I recommend staying here? YES BUT I would 100% ask how busy it'll be. if you want the best experience here make sure it isn't busy. Or less busy for that matter. read more

Great location with access to hiking trails and free access to 3 local state parks. This property is cottage/cabin style, which adds to the ambiance of being among the redwoods. The place has been around for a while, so the buildings are old, but they're well-maintained. Staff is friendly. There's a pool, on-site gift shop, restaurant, and coffee shop. My only gripe is that the hours for the restaurant and coffee shop aren't posted. They vary by season and perhaps day of the week. Ask so you don't get caught off guard. We'll be back!!! read more

Had a wonderful stay at the Big Sur Lodge. We had a large dinner party on there patio and Paul the manager provided amazing service. From the food and quality of everything can't recommend enough. Paul went out of his way to make sure we were accommodated. Our was large and on the rustic side but had all the amenities we needed with easy access to everything Big Sur has to offer. Rustic and dated, which might be unacceptable for some. As someone who has stayed multiple locations in Big Sur, I thought it was perfect (Rustic and 70s-era vibe is what Big Sur is all about!). Cabins are roomy and quiet. Room amenities are minimal, but they warn you up front. Unbeatable location (compare prices to other lodging in the area if you think this place is over-priced). A mixed review ... pros: easily accessible hiking trails (we did the Pfeiffer Falls and Valley View trails in the late afternoon) and wood and matches provided for fireplace use; cons: hole in shower was patched with tape and over-priced useless third-party internet service functioned at 1/20th (yes, we did the calculation!) of its advertised speed. Cabin was somewhat run-down and smelled rather musty. Overall, I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more

I had a great time at big sur lodge! We stayed in a double queen room with a fire place! It was awesome. We had a log of fire wood each day, tea & coffee to enjoy on our porch and plenty of space! We had a nice & clean shower with lots of towels. The complimentary soaps they give you smell SOOO good! The lady at the desk (she was older and working at night) was so friendly & fun! The only reason I take away a star is because we arrived at 11:55 for lunch but they didn't open the kitchen back up till 12 and the guy at the cafe was really rude to us and didn't really let us know until we had to "bother" him enough to ask. Came for several nights during the weekday. Convenient lodge location in the middle of several places to visit to the north and south. Has trails embedded in the lodge with a restaurant and shop near the cabins. The cabin was roomy with a fireplace (they provide the wood) and a pretty wide deck outside to sip your drink of choice (coffee and tea provided). The beds were stiff but comfortable. Unit was clean with clean towels and all. You definitely are paying for the location that it is in the middle of Pfeiffer Park in which you qualify to go to other parks with entry fee. read more

Def read the majority of reviews here. You are 100% paying for location and not accommodations and so should weigh the necessity of staying actually in the park vs near it at an Abnb. Pros: it was clean and in the park. Cons: pics look nice but function is lacking. Our experience with the staff was great but the room was mediocre at best. We booked a lodge cabin with kitchen because we need to be able to cook our own food for health/medical reasons. When we arrived, there was nothing to put in the oven for baking (no sheet pan, glass / metal pan, etc). We went to the front desk to ask for something and the gal who helped us did not seemed surprised by our request. She was super accommodating and grabbed us something from the kitchen chef but it seemed weird they would advertise and give you a kitchen and then not provide cooking utilities. When we made it back to the room we found out the oven didn't work. That's right. The oven didn't work. *shrug* Probably why there was nothing to bake on. Otherwise, the place is just super quirky. Not deal breakers, but given the amount of $$ you're spending to stay here, it's annoying. They gave us only decaf coffee pods, and the pods are twice as big as what the coffee makers can use so they are useless. No other coffee makers, so you are stuck with the pods or paying for espresso from the lodge. The stove top worked, but pretty much had only one setting: hottttttt (even for a gas stove this was bad, but remember, no oven!). The pot lids that had knobs weren't properly attached and had obviously been rigged, though most didn't have knobs at all. No wine opener. We were fortunate to get free wifi in our cabin due to proximity to the conference center, but it was super slow (like can't load a webpage slow). No complaints per se, but we wish we'd been better prepared to be offline during our stay. read more

Our 1st official stay for a few nights at The Lodge , I must say it exceeded our expectations. They where kind enough to change our room to a 2 bedroom room ( since our son is with us ) . The both rooms large ,nice eating area in room & bathroom good size , and we found the hidden fridge the next am LOL .. for my hubby he was missing his TV ( but iPad substituted ) overall great room , nice porch to sit and enjoy the scenery, esp the stars at night . The natural neighbors even payed us a visit , wild Turkey ( walks the grounds , stayed down near our cabin most of the day Chasing cars ..LOL) A few deer came out the woods to check us out also . Turkey sat behind our car after we packed up to leave , guess she wanted us to stay another night . See ya next time ! read more

Meh. I haven't read the other reviews but the rating seems correct. Since you're on the California coast and in Big She, you can charge outrageous prices and not deliver a whole lot. We had to stay here as part of a wedding block and had a two queen bed room with a fireplace. When we got in, it smelled like fire and like someone had used the flue incorrectly or something. It also looked like there was black smoot from the fire ON the actual fireplace - which shouldn't happen! We also saw this present in photos on their website..i suppose if you're not used to making a fire then it can pose some challenges.. Everything was fine and the bed and linens seemed clean, but the bathroom was gross and not clean. You can tell a lot about a place from their towels, and these were like old used pool towels being upcycled. Mine had THREE hairs on it that I didn't find (because who inspects a towel before you use it?) Until I was literally drying off in the shower. It was verrrrry off putting and gross. The door frame was dirty and there was also some hair on the floor of the bathroom. I'm usually pretty paranoid and detail oriented when it comes to cleanliness and thankfully the linens we're clean. Overall, the space was nice and the fireplace was cool with the couch and comfy chair. I definitely would not pay for this again and just stay at a campsite or drive 30 miles north to Monterey. read more

We had stayed at the Lodge previously in 2011 and loved the chalet style cabins. So when we planned a return visit to Big Sur, we knew where we wanted to stay. It saddens me that I have to give a lower review rating than I would have six years ago. Especially since they've recently completed a renovation. While the cabins are still wonderful, the main lodge and dining options are nothing less than in the minus range. Jessica at the front desk was the only, and I mean ONLY, competent and pleasant person I directly dealt with during our stay. She deserves a raise and a promotion. Big Sur Lodge is lucky to have her. Everyone else needs a serious course in 1. customer service and 2. how to do their jobs. My request for the same cabin we had previously was honored, which I appreciated. Upon entering, our porch light was out and a slat was missing from one of the window blinds, compromising privacy. We waited until the next morning to report it. Jessica was on duty as she had been at check-in, wrote down what I told her was wrong, and it was remedied by our return that night. I credit Jessica with seeing to it. The restaurant should not be open if it is not being run properly... and it is far from being run properly. The staff who are there are obviously not happy, and let it be known by their demeanor and comments. I got better service once they realized I was worth a good tip, honestly. Speaking of dining for guests, I have never stayed at such a high nightly rate when breakfast wasn't included. Even the five star in London I stayed at was comparable in cost and included breakfast. This seems to be the norm for Big Sur however, so I won't fault the Lodge. It's just a frustrating observation. The bar wasn't open even though it was supposed to be. The restaurant closed early for lunch leaving people with no notice. As a matter of fact, the placard outside said lunch was available. I guess it meant the grab and go items available in the gift shop, though people weren't being directed there either. My husband wanted ice cream one afternoon and was told they were all out. The girl at the counter failed to tell him there is an ice cream bar assortment sold in the gift shop. Maybe she didn't know. She should have. The point is she blatantly didn't care. Wifi is available for a charge. We found we got sufficient service through our provider while onsite and in our cabin. It was slow, but it worked. We love the cabins and the hikes onsite. You are paying for the surroundings in large part, and I understand that. I hope they work out the kinks, unfortunately I won't be back to find out. read more

We did a spontaneous Big Sur extended weekend in April, and when we looked online for available hotels in the area, Big Sur Lodge popped up. The price was right, and it's right in the heart of the area, so we decided to give it a try. Glad we did! We're a family of four, so the cabins with the extra bedroom were nice. Cabins are roomy with a good sized bathroom and shower, and all the amenities you would need. The entire cabin was clean, and the beds were comfortable. They give you a free bundle of firewood each day so you can light a fire. It was really nice to have on chilly nights after long hikes. My kids and I enjoyed using the heated pool during the day as well. We were awoken each day by the local wild turkeys, which roam about the cabins during the day. Some deer were also grazing outside our cabin in the morning. There are several trail heads that are accessible from the cabins so you don't have to drive to them, which is nice. The lodge office, restaurant and store are very convenient, and have everything and anything you might need. The staff was very friendly and helpful too. We didn't eat at the restaurant, but we did get coffee and ice cream after we hiked the Buzzard's Roost trail. PROS: Prices are very fair for the area Convenient, designated parking right in front of each cabin Clean cabins Almost instant hot water for showers Free firewood Friendly Staff CONS: Wold be nice to have towels out at the pool They advertise that they have a poolside bar. Family of 4, two adults, two kids... We stayed for 3 nights in a family cottage w king bed and two twins. Property is dated but charming. Staff are friendly. Food in the cafe is good... Only things the room is lacking are some maintenance updates; the heater was VERY LOUD and kept us up all night. Beds and pillows were comfy tho... Walls are very thin so we could hear our neighbors, very clearly. Showerhead was leaking and hardly sprayed, exhaust fan vent was super dirty. Room was nicely laid out and furniture was in good shape. Overall we enjoyed our stay but left tired due to not sleeping. I would suggest adding a microwave so families can reheat food and larger bath towels, they were soooo small, it was hard to dry off after a shower. We brought a folding kids table and chairs so our littles had somewhere to sit (glad we did!). Note, wifi and cell service are very spotty, download movies ahead of time for kiddos to decompress. Great location, you can hike right from the property. Pay attention to the cafe hours, they don't always have hot food. Little store and giftshop was nice too. read more

This place is really beautiful and remote. It's very quiet and so peaceful. You are surrounded by redwoods and that is the highlight of it. I decided to stay here for my birthday in late November. The cabins are a little run down and out of date, but cozy. There's a full kitchen in the cabin that I stayed in. It was spacious and had a living area. No TVs or radios which was nice. No bathtub and a very small shower. The towels were small and scratchy. I noticed a few insects in the cabin, but I guess thats to be expected when you're in the woods. The cost of the cabin per night was around $300 and I stayed 3 nights. I was having issues with the heater not working the first night, but maintenance came and fixed it promptly the next day. I paid extra for WiFi because I had no signal at all, but the WiFi signal was extremely weak and I wasn't able to use it. Then, I get locked out of my room twice... The first time I was locked out, the front desk was able to reset the keys and I was able to get back in. During the last night I was there when I returned to my room, I come to find that I was locked out again! This time around it was storming and the lobby was closed. It was also freezing and pitch black outside. Supposedly, theres a 24 hr emergency line that I called about 100 times, but nobody answered. At that point, my only two options were to sleep in my car, potentially freeze and wait until the office opens or find another hotel. So I chose to drive into Monterey, which is the nearest city and thankfully I was able to get room for the night. The roads were very windy and narrow. There were trees that had blown over into the road from the storm. Rather dangerous conditions to say the least. That night it was my birthday and I had cake and a fancy bottle of wine waiting for me inside the cabin. I was really looking forward to that and a hot shower. I was highly displeased with the turn of events, as anyone would be. The next day, we drive back to Big Sur lodge to go talk to the front desk. The woman who was in charge that day was very sympathetic and refunded my CC for two nights. If it wasn't for that, I would never consider staying here again. read more

Nice cottages in the Redwood forest. No WiFi which is a problem for emergencies. There are no phones in the room either. The lodge is way too far from the cottages, but there is emergency phones by the vending machines which is not close either. So if you were having an emergency in your room you'd have a severe problem. Knowing that, I probably wouldn't stay at this place again. Our room had a fireplace which was nice, but the wood was damp and didn't really work. It was clean and simple and I love the convenience of walking in the redwood park. read more

This is a review of the restaurant at Big Sur Lodge. After a little camping my wife and I thought we would have a nice breakfast before doing some biking and came by here today for a light breakfast. She ordered the oatmeal and I got the granola. Both were VERY good. They served some organic granola (that clearly did not come out of a box from Safeway) with some fruit and it was really flavorful ($7). I had a bite of my wife's oatmeal (about the same price) and that was pretty good too (the added cream did not hurt). Look like they serve other meals here too and might not be a bad option if you are in the area. The breakfast ordering is a little confusing at first. There is a counter with a coffee drink list behind it, and in front of the dining area next to it there was a stand were you normally wait to be seated for a table. It turns out if you are ordering in or out you need to place all orders at the counter. It would be nice if they put a sign on the stand indicating this (we were not the only ones that were confused by this). The wait staff were very nice and attentive. read more

Extremely overpriced for what you get. Expect your cabin to look like a motel 6. No wifi, TV, or phone which is ok since you're in the woods. There was hair on the bathroom wall, shower, and even a towel from the previous guest. Gross. Did they even clean? The coffee is in a tea bag, so you have to steep it. Again, ok since you're in the woods, I get it. But the creamer packets were so old that the adhesive to keep it closed had completely deteriorated. The packets were opened and the creamer was all clumped and not usable. Again, gross. I really enjoy coffee in the morning so this was a big disappointment. This forces you to get coffee at the lodge. Only one guy working, long line, and way overpriced. Then let's get to the restaurant. I have never experienced such service - or lack there of. Admittedly there was a large party of mostly kids in the back. But we sat at the bar for at least 30 min waiting to get served. We were never acknowledged. When I asked the server to please take our order, he essentially waved me off. So we figured maybe the service would be better if we grabbed a table inside. Wrong. The restaurant was not even half full. Even though there were about 7 people running around, apparently only one of them could actually take our order, get our drinks, and get our food. It was absolutely absurd. We would wave one person over, and they would essentially just point to one guy and say "sorry gotta ask this guy". When we did finally get our food, it was nothing special. Very average and obviously overpriced. The only positive is the location and there is at least one nice short trail head by the lodge leading you to a waterfall. Is this enough to stay here? This place is adorable. We called to see if there were rooms available and were able to get a better price and a room with a king bed. I would definitely call with some questions because it did seem that there were certain cabins that had shared rooms but I'm not sure if you shared with a Stranger party. We came out here for our anniversary and I will say that it did not disappoint. It is conveniently located between multiple places and how cool is it to be staying in a forest. The trail to Pfeiffer falls Also was Ok. It was a nice walk but the waterfall is pretty small. The cool thing is that they have stairs and a bridge leading up to it and a little seating area at the waterfall to relax. We also took the river trail and went down to an area that had what looked like steppingstones to cross the river. I tried to get halfway over but the water was getting too high for my shoes. The restaurant is great! Don't listen to reviews who say that the food is terrible. Everything in Big Sur is quite expensive and in the general area we did spend about $100 per meal which is a little crazy but Everything we had was great. Please do not bother with trying to pay for Wi-Fi. It does not work. It is 12.95 for 24 hours but once you connect it disconnects right away. The first time I tried it the token that you need to login went away and I went to the front desk and the young lady there gladly refunded me because I couldn't login and lost the key code. It is convenient that they have a gift shop a restaurant and even camping areas, you don't have to stay in the cabin. They also had turkeys walking around that were gobbling in the morning and I thought that was pretty cool. It is a great place to disconnect and I would love to stay here again and explore more of the park and Big Sur read more

It felt good to be in the park, to be so neat the big trees, to be able to hike from our room. And the room was fine with a comfortable bed, a skylight to see the stars and birds flying by, a little back deck. I was a happy camper! And the restaurant was really good too. The only unfortunate thing was that the conditioner/soap dispensers in the shower were empty, so that was disappointing. read more

There are some reviews on here talking about slow internet or the cafe food isn't good, but I think you are missing the point! This is somewhere to come to disconnect and enjoy the surroundings! The front desk was overly accommodating because I had some car sickness and got us a room a bit early. We are city folk so my husband messed up the fire in the room the first time and after just one call a guy came and brought us another fire starter and was super helpful! We were taken in last night when the north and south roads were closed, leaving us stranded in Big Sur with thousands of others. This hotel was incredible. They took us in even though they didn't have rooms available and let us stay in the lobby or go to the conference center for shelter. We opted to sleep on the floor in the conference center. All employees were so kind and kept everyone calm. Garrett especially was taking care of everyone as we slept all over the hotel lobby with dogs and babies and scared families. He was able to get us saline solution for our contacts so that we wouldn't be blind when evacuating the next day via car. He also booked the next few nights for us and told us that if we get evacuated, they will cancel the room with no charge. We called them when we got evacuated to let them know and the first thing they said was "we're so glad you're safe". They had to deal with thousands of scared people and yet they truly cared about random strangers and they also quickly said they will refund me right away. All of the employees were so caring while we were there, it was actually very touching. Although it was an eventful Easter wknd sleeping on the floor, we look forward to coming back here when the roads reopen to stay in this hotel and actually get to enjoy it next time. The grounds are gorgeous and we actually felt so at home here and calm, even given the circumstances. We pray you all are safe and that we are able to come stay with you again as soon as we can. As everyone says, this is not a fancy pants place. You want a 5 star? Pay 1K and go to Ventana. Our cost was 235 a night for a double queen on the 20/20 promotion. More than worth it. Shabby? Maybe a bit, but clean, located in Pfeiffer State park and to my mind the best value in Big Sur. How can you put a value on walking to your cabin and looking at that perfect night sky searching for shooting stars? Free entry to the state parks too. We give it 5 stars for being what it is and not hiding. Good for them. The dead tree by the cabin could use some love tho. read more

They tout no TV, telephone, cell service or air conditioning as amenities and they provide each cabin with game of some sort (Parchisi, Jenga, etc.). They offer wifi for $20 a day extra but it doesn't actually work well enough to be usable. Our room was dirty, with mold growing in shower. Bugs everywhere. We were there during a heat wave which I know the lodge has no control over but they didn't have enough fans on hand and the ones they had were disgustingly dirty. It was 90 degrees in our room. Gnats, mosquitos, spiders and dirt were a constant in our room. They don't service the rooms during your stay so you better not get your towel dirty and if you use a cup you hand wash it yourself. We had to change rooms due to the mold in first room but the next room was no better. The cabins can sleep 8 but you can only have 1 car and any extra cars have to park down by the pool in the limited parking there. I spoke to others during shuttle rides to events we were all attending and one couple had also had to change rooms and the next couple had checked out within 10 minutes of being in their room. The lodge required an event be held there in order to book a block of rooms for our family who were all attending a wedding in the area. They charged $4000 for patio usage and closed the café to accommodate the event (so other guests had no where to eat). The bartender and food were over $2K. Absolutely miserable event with two trays of food to snack on (meat was bologna). Flies were crawling all over the food. I saw two servers bring trays by but only one had enough left to actually make it to where we standing, so my dinner consisted of two tomatoes and two cubes of cheese (Caprese salad on skewers). A beautiful blue bird had a feast on one of the stationary trays (where all the flies were crawling). He'd fly onto tray, grab some cheese and fly away so at least we has some entertainment while sweltering in the heat. The bar only served beer and dry wine (which I don't care for either) so I had water only as a choice. One the good side, the surrounds are beautiful and the staff was super apologetic and nice. The manager apologized repeatedly for how miserable the place is, all the while with 3 giant gnats swarming within an inch of her face. I did learn the staff all lives onsite for about $100 a month rent plus free food. The view out my window was of staff cabins, each of which had satellite dishes for their televisions and one had a nice Mercedes parked out front. I highly recommend never staying here. If they kept the rooms clean and if they had a phone so you could at least call other members of your party in their rooms instead of having to hike to their room it would have been better. It's a long hike to the pool to get ice and uphill at least one way. They do have pretty scenery at least. read more

We had dinner here on the last night of our stay at the park. We should have taken a cue when there was one gal that we saw working and only a couple diners there at 5pm. We wanted a bit more than a burger so ordered the shrimp pasta and the mushroom ravioli. $25 a plate. Came on disposable plates and plastic utensils and was barely hot. Reference - We stayed in room 53, $300/night for two nights in early April. Pros: 1. Beautiful surroundings 2. You receive free entrance to 3 out of the 4 parks. Cons: 1. No free wifi service and the paying wifi is so slow it is hard to search or plan ahead. 2. The radiator makes LOUD clink, clank, and metal banging sounds all night long. 2. The entire room smells moldy and worse in the bathroom. 3. The bathroom fan is very loud yet doesn't function as an exhaust fan. 3. No lounge chairs for people to sit except the one small desk chair. 4. They don't clean the room unless staying there for over three nights. They don't take out the trash nor provide fresh towels daily. 5. The walls are very thin. You can hear people snoring from next door. 6. No TV, no phone in the room. 7. Skip the Lodge restaurant, overpriced and tasteless. read more

They seem very proud of the fact that they don't offer you TV, phone or Internet. I found the hotel ho-hum, however. The housekeeping was sloppy -- the flashlight in the bedstand table had dead batteries in it, and instead of a fully stocked tea/coffee setup, they only gave us something called "Decaffeinated English Breakfast Tea." They have a lot of nice trails here if you like hiking. The cafe worker is really friendly but I had a problem with the check in person. She was not very friendly. Especially after I mentioned that the guy ahead of me in line was quoted $50 less rate than I paid online for the same type of cabin. I mentioned it respectfully but it wasn't taken too well. Their souvenirs and food is all priced very high. The cabin I paid $220 for is nice but still seems high price. The internet barely works and costs $12.95 per day. A sandwich and a beer was $20. A bowl of spaghetti would have been $30. The atmosphere is peaceful except for some of the workers laughing and messing around. Overall I'm not too pleased with the experience for what I paid. read more

I'm very happy with my stay here- trip was after CA softened the travel restrictions. Keep in mind this is a total cabin-feel and down to earth! -Clean!!! Up to date furniture. All tables, counters, bedding, bathroom, etc were clean. No smells in the room. I can tell the staff did a great job ensuring the guests felt comfortable especially during these COVID times. Carpets were clean as well. -Serene & secluded location: The cabins are further up in the woods and away from the main road! King room had a balcony that was facing the woods, great to sit outside and have coffee. If you're here to see Pfeiffer beach/window rock, this is the closest hotel. Only a 10 minute drive ensured ample time to watch that famous sunset! There are great walks around the lodge, especially down by the river. -Staff: Helpful! I wish I got her name but the manager(?) let us check in early, which was greatly appreciated. I used their advertised "healthcare worker promo" and they were super nice about it. -Quiet hours policy: They enforce a 10PM quiet hour policy which is great. I could hear some muffled voices from the neighbors but everyone was respectful. -Other things to keep in mind: shower had a lower water pressure, there is no TV/wifi in the rooms but my AT&T cellular service worked fine for Netflix, there is a heater and extra blankets available in room. I booked a room without a kitchenette so no microwave, but there was a mini fridge and basic coffee maker. Good for a weekend getaway and I will definitely return! read more

5 solid stars for this place! The friendliest, most accommodating staff from the front desk to the restaurant, housekeeping, to maintenance, to the gift shop, everyone is happy to serve you and it really shows. The room was large, there was a sky light in the ceiling so the last thing you see before drifting off to a quiet sleep is the beautiful moon and stars. The bed was a plush king with several pillows and down bedding, the bathroom spacious, clean, with all the appropriate amenities, we had our own deck complete with deck chairs and table. There are no TV or phones in the rooms (who cares) and some cell phones don't get cell-service here, if you happen to be with AT&T you're in. The whole point to being here is to not be plugged in anyway so these things shouldn't matter unless you're an uptight a-hole unable to give it a rest! That's right put the cell phone down and the computer, no more texting for the nature inept kiddies, everyone has to get off their asses and get outdoors....imagine that? The gift shop sells ice cold vintage sodas, lots of snacks, and plenty of hand puppets if you desire such things. There's something for everyone! Come for the rest, stay because it's beautiful. read more

+ Setting + Staff + Rooms + Convenient + Amenities - The desk took forever over 15 mins to check us in because they were helping non guests plan hikes - Desk took an additional 15 mins to swap out our room keys when we returned because the room was dirty - Front desk sent us to a room that hadn't been cleaned - Shut off the water off with short notice - No matches or lighter in room so we couldn't enjoy the complimentary wood bundle (which isn't really com - Not worth $400 a night to have no fire and no morning shower! On the plus side the staff was great! The housekeeping manager overheard us discussing going back to the desk because the room was dirty. Rosemary promptly got us a room she had just cleaned to accommodate us after letting us see it to decide if we liked it. We still had to swap the keys but at least we were able to unpack and put our feet up first. The gentleman working in the deli was really nice and made excellent recommendations while accommodating us. Excellent service but NOT a good stay :( UPDATED REVIEW While at the Lodge I fell in an unlit parking spot and broke my leg! Desk handed my husband a piece of paper saying to call 9-1-1 for emergencies or drive 45 mins to the hospital. No offer of apology, no ice, no bag to put ice in, no "since there's no cell service can we call 9-1-1 for you or call ahead to the hospital or call an ambulance for you.?" Nothing read more

I booked a reservation super last minute while on the road. Ended up getting there after the lodge closed and the reservation came in late which was my fault. We found a worker she helped give us information on who to call. A man named Israel I think helped get us a cabin right away and the workers were very nice. They all were super helpful and worked with us even though we messed up on our part. The cabins were beautiful and clean. It's a beautiful area and a very nice place to visit. read more

We stayed in a single with a very comfy king size for 2 nights. It was a nice getaway from usual hotels. Cabin style, no TV or phone. This made it more peaceful and relaxing. Every room is close to trails and the restaurant and shops on site, however, you don't want to walk from your room down. The roads are very narrow and treacherous when a vehicle is coming through, especially at night were visiting almost nothing. The restaurant here is amazing! We had dinner the first night. The coffee is great at the cafe. We had a nice patio on the front of our cabin and sag outside one night and watched the wild turkeys wander around. It is kind of difficult to find at night. The sign isn't clear when passing on the main road. Parking is limited in the front as the the hotel lobby parking lot also serves as a public (with daily permit) lot for the trails on site. read more

As a family, we've stayed within the Grand Canyon and Yosemite, and we've stayed in various cities, both luxury and mid range locations in the recent several years. This is a state park lodge -- so much nicer than camping but never going to compare to Ventana or Post oak (but those are also adults only). For my family of four, wanting a weekend away, it was absolutely perfect. Fabulous location within the park; walk directly to trails. Spacious, clean, and comfortable. I was initially a little hesitant reading prior reviews, but we are leaving today with plans to return again in the future. One last note, though, wifi is spotty. I believe this is the case through much of the state park area. read more

I recently had to do a very last-minute reservation schedule change due to COVID. The lodge staff were so friendly and accommodating. It was very easy and fast to change my reservation to a future date. Can't wait to stay at the lodge in the future! read more

It's a little mixed and matched at the Big Sur Lodge. The rooms are described as cabins and it's nothing more than a clean mobile home. I wish they would just say rooms instead of calling it a log cabin. The restaurant there exceeded my expectations-good food (quality and value) and caring service. As for the receptionist they were seemingly knowledgable about the area, but then when we went to look for some of these trails it was difficult to find, so we asked a local and they gave us precise directions. We spent 3 nights there on Memorial day weekend, there were 6 of us sharing a cabin with one room, 2 queen and 2 twin beds. At first we wanted to camp but then we realized all the camp sites was taken like a year ago. Big Sur Lodge was the most reasonable accommodation we found. We were a little skeptical since this place only had a 3-star rating here. 5 stars for the service We called at least 4 times ahead of our arrival asking ten different questions (e.g. how many beds are there, can we arrive late, can we bring a dog, etc. etc. etc.) Every time they picked up their phone right away and they were all friendly and patient. We did arrived late (at 11:30pm) and they stuck the keys and docs on the front door of the office for us to pick up. Very accommodating. There is basic room service, they checked on us once and asked if we needed anything. But I am sure if you ask for more frequent services they will be happy to do so. 4 stars for the facility The facility was much better than what I expected. Everything was neat and newer, parking is right in front of our cabin, walking distance to the lodge restaurant/gift shop/pool. And the best thing is that the site is in the Pfeiffer State Park so we're only 5 minutes away from the hiking trails. The only thing was there my bed sheet has some mysterious red/brownish stain on it. I didn't complain or anything but I am sure if I did, they'd replace it right away. 5 stars for the environment We saw wild life at our door! Though it wasn't mountain lions or bears, we saw turkeys and deers! It felt so great to be that close to mother nature! There are redwood everywhere! 4 stars for the price Big Sur is expensive unless you camp. But 6 of us stayed for 3 nights over Memorial Day weekend for a little less than $1000.
