For decades I have gone in when store first opens and it has little traffic. I head to the butcher dept and order 6 pounds of hamburger in half pound increments. I then thank the butcher and continue shopping. it's usually done in 5 min. I usually come back in 10 n grab them. well this morning I was told that they can not do this anymore. It takes to much time. It's a new rule. as a single man who works 2 jobs n has little time. having the butcher to do sell me proper portions, since the store only sells large amounts. it's part of what the. pitcher is for. after not grabbing any of the meats and speaking w the meat department staff, giving excuses to not work. I left store planning to go to the local butcher in the next town and grab all my meat. not just the hamburge. I called in to explain how this has been offers for decades. just last month I went and had the burger make my order. The store customer service person could care less and just wanted off the phone.. never have I been disappointed with this store until today. if they continue this, I won't be buying any meat from them again and will take my other grocery needs elsewhere. if that means buying all my meat from the meat locker in the next town and the rest of groceries at the other food store up the hill. so be it. read more

This review is for the Hot Soups & buffet section, as I do not do my standard grocery shopping at Big Y, I find their prices to be a bit higher than the other supermarkets in the area. Soups are decent, but I often don't get a chance to have their soups because they tend to be completely out when I take my mid-afternoon lunch break. I've been disappointed several times, had to make other selections from the Hot Bar, which I find is just OK (and expensive). Consequently, I don't enter the store much anymore. I am 76 years old, run a hospitality business and I shop 4-5 days/ week at Torrington Big Y and I love the store. I spend quite a bit of money there every month. However, I hate that there are never enough small carts and many people feel the same way. The big carts are too big and hard to maneuver. So if there are no small carts, I have no choice. I shop with a list so I don't buy more just because I have a big cart. Also, I used the quick checkout for awhile but the WIFI does not work very well especially in the back of the store. Upgrade the WIFI please if you want the quick checkout to work for Big Y. Otherwise Big Y in Torrington is great! read more

This store has the worst produce department in town. Walked in around 10:30 in the morning and the place looked like it was hit by a runaway train. No other department in the store looked like this. Meat was fully stocked and looked appealing and the same with the bakery. The deli was very crowded so I just walked past. I needed strawberries and blueberries for my Red white blue fruit salad. Grabbed the best looking strawberries I could find and it took on a digging expedition akin to an archeological dig. But ; they looked real good without any bad ones or moldy ones. Went to cut them and nearly all the berries in the center were so bad I couldn't use them. Probably got one container out of the two. Who buys your produce ? Where does it come from because honestly it's horrible. Went to go grab some dandelion greens , I have cancer and they are supposedly good for it but ..... they were wilted and old. The entire bottom layer had black leaves. All the items that normally have the stem removed still had them and they were large. The Napa looked like a lightbulb. Please tell me you can do better than this. Those who work in produce should be ashamed and embarrassed. Raise the standards. read more

Their meats and fish are always good. Price of meat is comparable to other stores, the fish is a little higher in price but the quality is always good. The butchers, fish mongers,deli,and barely staff have always been great. Cashiers and baggers are pleasant. (I avoid self check out at all stores if possible.) I live one minute from Stop and Shop on the West side but I travel to Big Y to shop. Why? Because the store is very clean, the staff are very helpful and the selection of most of the items I like or use are there. The sandwich deli makes very good grinders and their prices are impossible for anyone else in town to beat. I especially like their tuna grinders. The bakery is awesome....too awesome for me as it turns out because I've developed an addiction to the mudslide cookies and the triple chocolate cake. read more

I am generally a Stop & Shop customer, but Big Y will likely be seeing more and more of my business. They are more expensive, but if Stop & Shop continues on their new trend of replacing national brands with store brands, defecting may be worth it. Big Y saved me today with a real brand of baking powder. The store is always clean and bright. Their bakery is delicious, possibly the best you can find at a grocery store (especially if you love icing). They rose above and beyond the occasion when Stop & Shop went on strike, and were able to accommodate the overflow customers who wouldn't cross the picket line. (Of which there were a lot, but the Big Y employees were grace under pressure and long Easter weekend lines) read more

I am a Big Y regular. It is often said that the store is expensive, but the sales here are competitive and I'm very happy with the pharmacy in particular. That said, in recent years, the service is a mixed bag, particularly among the newer hires. This morning, I witnessed a young lady at the customer service desk being very patronizing to a senior citizen who had a question or two regarding some seasonal merchandise. Sad, because Tuesdays used to be Senior Day at the store. When it was my turn, I'd requested a lottery ticket and because she was in the middle of balance procedure , she could not honor my request. Understood. I asked her when tickets would become available and she said, "i don't know. The more I am interrupted, the longer this is going to take." I asked her for stamps and she refused to sell them to me at the desk and pointedly told me that I had to buy them by the book. Between my encounter with her and what I'd witnessed with the lady in front of me, my impression is that this young lady has some disdain for customers. If it's not a just a bad day she may be having, she might consider adjusting her attitude or finding a less service oriented position. Being interrupted from time to time is part of a retail job, and most of the employees at Big Y are exemplary at this crucial retail skill without giving the impression that a customer is somehow an inconvenience. read more

Coolest team you'll ever meet at a grocery store. They do their best to make you feel like family every time you walk in. Great selection, kickass bakery, fresh pizza is the best deal in town, and the clearance section as bakery updated daily in back is an awesome bonus too. Excellent selection on soft drinks and ethnic food sections as well. Sometimes it's worth spending an extra 10-20cents here and there to support a smaller business (relatively speaking), that does a lot for the community. Outside of it being a grocery store the bakery and hot foods/prepared foods are just going to crap. Cake decorators are awful. Or I just got unlucky and had the same one for a few different occasions throughout the year. Used to get the subs cause they were always a great deal until I got stale bread. And always enjoyed the pizza. Never any issues until today for pizza. It looked like a 5 year old made it. Dried out cheese and awful looking. But the fact that an employee was ok putting this pizza in the box and serving it is what really gets me. Done taking chances on these guys. Pics posted. read more

This is a very large, clean, bright grocery with a mostly friendly staff. We find ourselves increasingly doing our regular shopping here because it carries substantially more items than our closest store, the very over-pricey Stop and Shop in Litchfield. The diversity of product offerings is impressive; for instance, they boast almost a store-length long row of freezer cabinets devoted to ice cream - how good is that!! Their produce section has lots of fresh veggies and fruits, and their prepared foods are quite reliably good. As with just about all of the stores we've encountered in Northwest Connecticut, their red meat prices are way too high for the quality of meats. The cuts are generally too thin, too fatty, not red enough. And bragging about Angus beef is just too much; there are other, better choices of breeds that seldom show up. But too much complaining doesn't offer anyone much satisfaction. We like Big Y overall and find it our best choice for regular shopping these days. read more

Terrible. I have been shopping at Stop and Shop for years and have not given in to TRACKING MY PERSONAL PURCHASES though a card to get gas cheaper... SS always has a button to use their card. After spending 30 minutes picking groceries the woman at the register would not swipe a card for me to get my discount. Others have in the past. Terrible policy. Never shopping here again. read more

This store has recently been renovated and its one of the most gorgeous supermarkets. The only thing is that often I find that their produce section is so sparse, they run out of everything. There is no selection. Me and my husband have a joke that the store is so big that you rarely see another shopped, so we joke around by saying its like The Walking Dead and we are fighting for our lives to survive and get the food we need, but there's nothing left. read more

I went here for some food had my service animal with me (French Mastiff) and they are big dogs everyone wanted to pet him and normally the right thing to do is ask to pet a service animal. But kids couldn't help it they screamed puppy and parents were happy kids were distracted for a few minutes. The employee's were just as ecstatic as the kids they didn't give us any problems about him being a service animal. So thank you big y so much read more

I have been shopping Big Y in Torrington since it open . I love the store and the employees. my only complaint is when your only shopping for two you can,t buy one roll or one bagel anymore you are forced to buy a four or six pack. I dont want to freeze not great when frozen so we end up throwing them away, so I been going to another store where they do have singles. I really dont want to do that so I hope we can go back to single servings. thank you read more

This particular Big Y has the best FISH Dept. (hands down !) within a 25 mile radius. Fish is often wild and not previously frozen, and the cuts are thick and beautiful. I believe that Big Y have a contract directly with some fishing boats, or something like that, which gives them the best "catch of the day." The prices are always lower than elsewhere; the best for 20 years. read more

The store is beautiful inside. I was amazed the first time I went in there. The grinders at the sandwich shop are delicious and fresh. The meat section is a bit disappointing as there is not a big selection of pre packaged meats. Seems you have to go to the butcher counter for a bigger selection. We were treated really bad tonight while eating Pizza at their lounge area BIG Y Torrington . We bought 4 slices of Pizza for dinner which they told us it comes with free fountain drink for every 2 slices . My husband always bought the foot long sandwich with free bottled water but that night we decided for Pizza. My husband told the cashier he wanted the bottled water instead of the fountain drinks the cashier didn't say anything so my husband just casually got the bottled water and we headed to the dinner table. In the middle of our dinner a woman came to our table with a raised irate voice though she greeted us good evening she was obviously furious and finally asked my husband if he paid for his water. My husband answered he thought the bottled water is free in view of the fountain drink. The woman in her raised , irate , threatening and teeth grinding voice told my husband to pay up for the bottled water and she'll overlooked it. He basically had to stop eating and went to the counter to pay for $1.50 bottled water. The woman didn't stop there she also accused me of parking the empty cart at their lounge area. I was speechless the way she treated us while dining in their store. We didn't finish our dinner . I went to ask the people behind the deli for a to go box and asked them who was the woman who harassed us while we were eating . The cook told us her name was Kim and she was the night manager . That is even worse , who you called and tell you were unfairly treated when it's the management doing it? BIG Y WORLD CLASS MARKET NOT! My husband and I are interracial couple he's white and I'm Filipino had we are not perhaps we were treated differently. Kim treated us like we were thieves. We are people with Dignity my husband is a retired Geologist and I have a degree in Economics and a business owner. For $1.50 bottled water BIG Y Torrington loses our business maybe they don't care but I believe in karma. We will NEVER go there again and will never say nice about it. Hopefully when this kind of misunderstanding happens next time Kim will handle this in a polite and kind manner. She could have said to us fountain drinks can't be replaced with bottled water and nicely ask us to pay up right there or after our dinner . read more

If you haven't tried Big Y's sandwich shop, I recommend it. I had silver coin pricing but had a foot long grinder and 1 liter soda for under $5. Although I still prefer Torrington's local delis, Big Y beats out Subway every day of the week in my book. read more

I'll start off with the positives, this store is absolutely beautiful and the Meat, Frozen, Grocery, Bakery, and Deli departments are all wonderfully and professionally run by their managers. The store is also beautifully designed and has a great selection. Sadly, the outside workers and the managers up front are very lazy and do not do their jobs. Every time I go to the store the parking lot is full of carriages (many of which are resting against cars or in a position to roll into one) and there are no hand baskets in sight, I feel like this falls on the management since many of the outside workers are not outside doing anything when I get there (like ever). And sometimes by the time I finish shopping and walk to the Lowes parking lot (where I park since I don't want my car scratched by the overwhelming number of carts) the problem has only gotten worse and the outside person is nowhere in sight. Also, the outside people do not adequately clean the bottle machine as they smell terrible and the floors are always pitch black with old soda and when you call for someone to empty a machine they usually shake it down. I wish I could give the store a better review as I really like the departments I mentioned earlier but the issues outside are ridiculous and the manager who watches them clearly does not hold them responsible and it inconveniences me greatly that I have to AVOID their parking lot to not get my car scratched up. Whoever is the store manager in charge is obviously either never involved in the departments or simply doesn't care about the kind of image his/her store presents customers. read more

I was here for the first time last Sunday. This is a beautiful store with a nice organic section. A little pricey, but sale prices were competitive. Very clean, with friendly front end service. Beautiful produce. However, at the deli, the clerks stood out. Apparently, they'd had a busy day. A heavy set young woman in glasses behind the counter credited that to it being the beginning of the month when "all the food stamp people are out." A Hispanic woman behind the counter next to her said, "I want FOOD STAMPS!" sarcastically several times, and started laughing. Not a good look. read more
