I chose to leave and find a new treatment center. I was blessed to find Dr. Xavier at Scripps in San Diego who was referred by a friend. She reached out within days, knew my history, was kind, compassionate, and willing to help. She is such a pleasure to meet with and always thorough in explaining what is happening; providing detail in terms we can understand. She responds to my emails the same day! She doesn't have her support staff reach out unless it's a basic question, like med refill. A cancer journey is horrid, and it takes an amazing doctor to make it a pleasant in knowing that your doctor is doing all she can to help and at the same time allowing you to have a voice in the decision process. After a 5 day run of 24/7 chemotherapy I got a miraculous result. The tumor disappeared. Standard practice is then to radiate the affected area accompanied by small doses of chemotherapy to sensitize and kill any remaining cancer cells. I was shocked to learn I had to do 33 sessions. Each one is roughly equivalent to 200 X-Rays. The chemo nearly killed me and now I was staring at 33 days (5 days a week) of intensive radiation. I freaked out. I learned this the day I met with Dr. Tahir Ijaz at Radiation Medical Group. It was not a great start to our relationship. What became clear over the next few days was Dr. Ijaz is a meticulous and very caring doctor. His plan for me was incredibly precise and I learned he could radiate me within 1 mm of tolerance in 3 dimensions. They made a custom mask for my head and shoulders and you are literally bolted to the table. Their machine is state-of-the-art and once you are locked down the entire process takes about 2 minutes. Over the 33 day period Dr Ijaz and the wonderful staff at RMG looked after me and monitored every little nuance of my response. My nurse Margo was especially kind to me and did everything possible to make me comfortable. Head & Neck radiation is Hell. Simple as that. Having somebody like Dr Ijaz on your side means you have the best possible chance for a good outcome. The folks at RMG let me keep my mask. I am going to frame it. I've seen a lot of doctors and have had a wide array of positive and negative experiences throughout my health journey. This has been the only one negative enough for me to 1) write a direct grievance to the facility and 2) post it online. You can read through the details in the attached images to make up your own mind about the experience but more than anything I felt it was important to warn people about that could possibly be treated like this during their cancer treatment. The appointment itself was bad enough but the reply to my grievance not only included very incorrect details about my health but tried justifying the behaviors that made me uncomfortable as if I don't know any better.

A general gynecologist took a biopsy that was negative but still referred me to South Coast for a more specialized assessment, and the biopsy from South Coast showed cancer. I'm thankful for the second opinion and early detection. Dr. Duggan, who is now retired, was amazing and an expert in her field. And after tumor removal, bilateral lymph node dissections and CO2 burns, now I'm under the care of Dr. Lindsey Charo and the best physician assistant Sarah Karpen. Dr. Charo brings fresh energy and knowledge. And I can't say enough great things about Sarah's compassion and take-charge knowledge. Sarah has a great eye for detail and has caught pre-cancer areas and areas that required further attention. This office has moved from Carmel Valley so be patient as they on-board more staff. They share space with Metro Family on the 2nd floor. Their phone system and patient app FollowMyHealth are a work in progress as well. Looking forward to the clinic setting deeper roots in their new location and acquire the support staff that allows them to continue to shine!
