Over the summer I was driving to Chicago to scout out places to live…read more Outside of Roselawn, Indiana, my car decided to have a seizure and stop working. Initially, I had the car towed to a dealership in Merrillville as I had no idea what was in the area. After finding out the dealership wanted to charge me $4000 for a new transmission, I decided I needed to have the car taken somewhere else. Thanks to the help of my dad (isn't that the truth though? Dads to the rescue), he called around and found the guys at Allon's. They offered to tow the car for free, and then did an estimate. Apparently when my transmission crapped out on me a few years prior (thanks, Saturn... for your stellar transmissions), the shop I took it to didn't do the work they told me. Steve at Allon's explained what was wrong with my car, how the original shop screwed up, and then fixed the car for a much MUCH more reasonable price. Since I had to fly back to where I was living at the time, then pick the car up at a later date, he was kind enough to offer to keep the car on lot without charging a storage fee. Not only that, but he had his wife drive the car around and get it up to highway speeds to make sure it was safe for me to drive. The people at Allon's are friendly and while the shop is a little small and off the highway, I would go back to them for any major repairs.

If I could select zero stars I would…read more My 2002 Honda Civic unfortunately broke down and had to be towed to the nearest mechanic. I had the misfortune of having it towed here. I called the location in the morning and when I mentioned that I thought it was head gasket issue the man on the phone scolded me and told me I had no idea what I was talking about. He gave me a grandiose lecture on how he knows all about cars and has been doing it for x amount of years. He was extremely rude and dismissive. He called me several days later and told me it was NOT a head gasket. I then took my car to the Meineke on the same road (where the man was very kind by the way) and they told me that my car did, in fact, have a severe head gasket issue. Not only is this mechanic extremely disrespectful, but he also apparently has no clue what he's talking about. I'm sorry but if a 20 year old woman knows more about cars than you do you may want to rethink your career. What a waste of time and energy.

So we stayed the chilly night and the next morning John sent a tow truck to pick us up. I had been traveling from Florida to Milwaukee and had previously stopped at a Mr. Transmission to fix the transmission (clearly was not fixed..) John and Curtis were amazing and got us back on the road by the end of day! I am so blessed and grateful to have met such an amazing person with a wonderful character! My brother's review: John is a man first, and awesome mechanic next! Had to get towed in to his shop unintentionally, and unbenounced but still service was rendered gleefully. The vehicle was of a family members, but treated as my own. John was more honest about what all could be wrong, but still reassuring of what could also be done. The part was miniscule but needing to be ascertained elsewhere. Although we waited hours till arrival of the part, John tailored to our needs and wants. All in all, made an preordained tragedy into a parable situation. Thanks again.
