Awesome experience checking out the aquarium through this venue that held a special event. The views are incredible overlooking La Jolla and enjoyed seeing the wide array of exhibits they have here. I loved seeing the penguins, jellyfish, seahorses etc. Their space was transformed for the event and it was a neat venue to enjoy after hours. Definitely a wonderful option for having an event and/or enjoying the aquarium for locals and out of towners.

I've always wanted to go to Birch Aquarium and so glad I finally made my way. I liked the right side of the aquarium the best. It was neat seeing the jellyfish, large aquarium display, and the seahorses! The interactive area outside was underwhelming and had very little sea life to explore. The view of the vast ocean was stunning though! The left side of the aquarium had one leopard shark. There was also an area for the kids to play. Overall the aquarium was small and would be worthwhile for them to consider an upgrade.

You can purchase your tickets online at a discounted rate. Parking is free. They have several handicap parking spots available. I haven't visited this lovely aquarium in a couple of years, it is still well maintained. We arrived in time for the sea dragon feeding and penguin feeding. The staff is very knowledgeable, such a great place for children to learn about sea life. We loved seeing all of the sea animals, our favorites were the sea dragons, octopus & the touch pool. We loved the gift shop! Definitely check this small aquarium out.

We took our kiddo to Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, CA for the first time and had a fantastic time. If you purchase your tickets online, you'll save $5.00. Birch Aquarium offers wide variety of marine life, including penguins and seahorses, alongside many interactive and educational exhibits. The Aquarium has stunning ocean views of La Jolla Shores beach and offers free parking. You can bring lunch for your kiddos and sit in the outdoor picnic tables. One thing that was upsetting was having to see drinks left on tables and benches by kids and parents. Please pick up after yourselves! There are many volunteers at the Aquarium and are not there to pick up your trash!! Tourists need to be respectful of this Aquarium it's not your home!! Sorry had to vent check it out! Happy Yelping :)

Place to sit and get some lunch. Menu looked pretty good

Haven't been here in forever, so went with the grandkids... super cute!! A lot of information, mixed with play, mixed with just relaxing vibe... not sure how often we'd come back unfortunately as the price really was a lot for what there is. So definitely look for some deals... fun day over all though

We wanted to do something different with the grandkids, so we decided to spend the day at Birch Aquarium. They had a great time! The aquarium is on the smaller side, but there is plenty to do to keep kids entertained and having fun. One of their favorite activities was an interactive area where they could build little boats and float them down a simulated river. They absolutely loved it and spent quite a bit of time there. The weather in June was perfect, with a nice ocean breeze that made the visit even more enjoyable. Overall, it was a fun family outing, and the grandkids had a blast.

The hands on exhibit for kids and the viewing tanks are incredible along this oceanfront aquarium ,which could be a scenic view of the ocean and marine life. The jellyfish exhit was the most facinating and the layout of the aquarium made for a more structured and educational visit.

Small but WONDERFUL aquarium. Staff were so kind and knowledgeable. The blue penguins are a must to see! Also - the sea turtle has a 3d printed shell piece!!! Brian the turtle keeper is sooooo kind and just a gem of a human! He was amazing answering our questions!

    Animal Crossing Stamp Rally!

I had visited on a Saturday to do the Animal Crossing Stamp Rally! We paid a pretty penny to be here and felt as if the event was lacking. It was hot and we had to park down the hill in a separate parking lot. It was ridiculously busy because of the event, which we expected as much. We walked to the entrance, and it was also a very long line. Once we entered, we were given a stamp book, though it wasn't a book, it was a card. Collecting the stamps around the aquarium was easy, but going through people was not easy. It was overcrowded and it had a big stench of body odor, especially near the jellyfish area. We couldn't take the photos we wanted nor could we see the characters around the aquarium. Because of the people, we couldn't spend time looking at the critters either. The only area that we could enjoy was the outside area overseeing the beach. We were able to touch some anemones and snails. Don't get me wrong, I love the aquariums and supporting them, but this review is mainly for the ANCNH Event. We've also been to this aquarium before and I adore it. We'll have to be back to enjoy our time seeing the animals.

Very cool, no need to spend the whole day there, maybe up to two hours. The tanks were impressive with a cool variety of animals!!! There's cars that park early on in the sidewalk, but we were lucky to get into one of the lots nearby that offer a complimentary 3 hour parking. There's a Birch Aquarium x Animal Crossing tour collab going on, so ontop of my first time experience here, I was able to enjoy the exhibits. Lots of interactive ones where you can touch with your hands. Lots of kids' activities and the Animal Crossing tour provided some fun character photo-ops and some cute meet-and-greets with the characters!!! They kept the lines for the character pics going pretty efficiently. Pretty great activity to do in San Diego.

I'm writing a review after they finally finished construction on the right side of the aquarium. The new wing is incredibly well built with plenty of unique exhibits. I particularly liked the jellyfish tanks, giant pacific octopus tank, the giant clam/mussel/spiny lobster tank, and the huge tank with the giant bass. I think I spent nearly 2 hours alone and the left wing was closed for construction. The penguin exhibit is also a cute little outdoor bird pool where they all gather and flop around. I also came during their animal crossing collaboration and it was nice having some blather screens for explanations as well as a gulliver plush in one of the beach exhibits. Overall, it was a fun experience and I can't wait for the left wing to finish construction.

I came here for the Animal Crossing New Horizons Collab! However I have been here a few times in the last year. So this is my overall review. The remodel is really stunning. I love how each tank/display is set up so you see a different part of the ocean. There's reef, deep water, tropical waters, shallows, and so much more. The fish and tanks are well cared for and stunning! Each time I've been it's very clear the animals are well cared for, as are the facilities. They have gorgeous fish, invertebrates, turtles, rays, sharks, and penguins! The ACNH collab was super cute! Lots of themed displays and themed information through Blathers. I hope to see more fun collabs in the future.

Ask the Community - Birch Aquarium

Do they still offer discounted tickets with WIC?

Yes wic and Ebt. They give discounts for.

    Food and drinks?

Birch Aquarium’s onsite dining option, Blue Wave Bistro, is the perfect place to grab a bite to fuel your aquarium adventures. With menu options ranging from grab-and-go favorites like the Orchard Chicken Salad Sandwich or something from the grill…

Is the aquarium still under construction? i want to go for my birthday in a couple weeks but don't want to go if it's still under construction

We were just there and the work is over. all good

Does the birch aquarium take cash?

entry is online and timed but cafe takes cash

What is the admission cost with an EBT card?

I believe it is $3-5 per person up to 4 from what I read online. Call beforehand. Parking is free

How long does it take to see everything?

We were there for about 1.5 hours. Granted it was a chilly, rainy day so we didn't do much of the outdoor stations. I would say allow 2-2.5 hours for the experience.

Is it still worth going if just the outside is open?

No.. it's beautiful place but the outside is really small as far as things to see, the view is gorgeous.

Is the business open during covid?

Yes it is. You will need to purchase tickets ahead of time and they will give you an allotted time in which you need to be there to enter the aquarium

Is this aquarium as big as the Aquarium of the Pacific? Would it be worth a long drive or is it more for locals?

No this aquarium is smaller than the aquarium of the pacific. You can go through the entire aquarium in 1 hr. I definitely was in no rush, so I went through it twice. The Monterey Bay aquarium is similar in size as the Aquarium of the Pacific.…

    Can we bring snacks/drinks?

We saw people with snacks and leaving their trash! We had snacks for our pre teen kiddos and kept our trash. We sat outside and no one said anything. We definitely had our water bottles. However before you go in you can totally eat your snacks in…

How much is it for military also are there any discounts for the parents and siblings?

Adults 19.50 Kids under 2 are free Kids over 3 are 15.00…

Has anyone had a kids bday party here? What was it like?

Just had one today. Honestly, for the money ($400 for 20 people) and what you get, I cannot recommend it. I love the Birch Aquarium and will keep visiting, but my family was incredibly disappointed in the birthday party services. For the two hour…

I was really disappointed with our experience at San Diego Surf School. My husband and I booked a…read morebeginner surf lesson because we had never surfed before and wanted to learn the fundamentals from a professional instructor. Unfortunately, that isn't what we received. Our instructor told us he was just visiting from out of town, and it felt like he wasn't prepared or invested in teaching. To start he was late, when he did show up we received very little instruction before going into the water and were never taught many of the basic skills that beginners should learn, including proper paddling technique, how to pop up on the board, or even how to safely fall off the board. As beginners, that was especially concerning because safety should be the top priority. Once we were in the water, we were practically left on our own. Instead of receiving coaching, corrections, or guidance throughout the lesson, we were left trying to figure everything out ourselves. We paid for a surf lesson, not just a board rental. After the lesson, I reached out to the owner to explain our experience. To their credit, they responded promptly and admitted that our lesson was not taught according to their beginner curriculum. They explained that beginner lessons are supposed to include ocean safety, surf etiquette, how to safely fall, paddling technique, popping up, and active coaching throughout the lesson, all of the things we expected but didn't receive. However, the resolution they offered was only 50% off another lesson. While I appreciate the acknowledgment that our lesson fell below their standards, I don't think it's reasonable to ask customers to pay again even at a discount to receive the instruction they already paid for the first time. They also mentioned that they couldn't offer a complimentary lesson because they wanted to ensure their instructors were fairly compensated. As a customer, I believe it's just as important that clients receive the quality of service they paid for. We chose this school because of its great reputation, which made this experience even more disappointing. Hopefully this was an isolated incident, but I think future beginners should know that our experience was far from the comprehensive lesson that was advertised.

The YMCA Dan McKinney location continues to be rockstars when it comes to their summer camp experiences for the kids. There is a reason we come year after year and it has to do with the quality of their high interest, highly engaging camps. The counselors continue to work hard to ensure all campers are having a blast and be so patient and kind in those moments of overwhelm. As an educator myself, I greatly appreciate the care and effort of each counselor we've met this summer. I see the effort and it doesn't go unnoticed. Our oldest (10 year old, autism and ADHD) continues to love the different camps he's been a part of this summer. Slime, Harry Potter, Adventure (I mean....they're going on amazing field trips to Petco Park and Safari Park!), and soon Parkour. Our youngest (5 year old) has loved gymnastics, Disney Jr, and coming up Little Gardeners. It just feels good as a parent (and special needs parent at that) to drop off your kids knowing they're safe, going to make some new friends, and thoroughly enjoy each activity each day. Registration is straightforward, communication each week is clear and helpful, checking in and out also a breeze. 10/10 So, thank you YMCA Dan McKinney for continuing to provide amazing camps for our kids and kudos to all of the counselors who are gems in bringing these camps to life for these/my kids.

When it's busy, the cave bouldering section can be a bit crowded because of their small seating area there. The other sections seem to have enough space though. First, I did not find the scheduling/payment process to be professional. We negotiated for a package of 10 lessons for $700.00 (1 per month up until our wedding). Suzie, the owner, asked us to pay this entire amount upfront via Venmo. I informed her that having never met her or the instructor or even set foot in the studio, I did not feel comfortable paying up front via Venmo b/c if they were running some sort of scam, they could run off w/ my money, & I would be SOOL. I said that I would gladly pay up front via credit card b/c if they ran off w/ my money that way, at least I could dispute the charge. To Suzie's credit, she was understanding of this concern, & she allowed me to pay for each lesson, one at a time, 48 hours in advance via Venmo. Thank GOD, I had the foresight to be concerned about this b/c as you will read below, our instructor abandoned us after lesson 4, without ever completing our dance, so if we had paid the $700.00 up front via Venmo, he could have run off w/ our money. My 2nd issue was the lack of organization & professionalism in scheduling. Because we wanted to do 1 lesson per month up until our wedding, we asked our instructor, Mehmet, several times if we could book all of our lessons in advance on the same day of the week each month (e.g., every 2nd Wednesday of every month). Every time we asked this, he just brushed us off & told us to text him whenever we wanted to schedule, which just made a lot of extra work for us to have to text him the week b4 every time we wanted a lesson rather than already having it planned. Next, on our 1st lesson, Mehmet spent several minutes trying to talk us out of the song we picked for our first dance, which frankly, I very much did NOT appreciate as I put great thought into selecting it. Thankfully, I stuck to my guns & did not change the song, & eventually, it won Mehmet over, & even he liked it. Given we purchased 10 lessons, I expected we would spend more than 1 lesson on the basics, but by lesson 2, Mehmet informed us he had decided to be a flight attended again but assured us (1) it would not impact our dance, & (2) we would leave that day w/ the 1st minute of our dance complete (which seemed rushed for lesson 2 of 10). He even offered to fly back for our lessons, but we told him that was NOT necessary, & if he needed to, he could pass us off to another instructor. Lessons 2-4 seemed pretty rushed, & frankly, seemed like we were going to finish our dance way too quickly, with way too many lessons left, but we figured it would be good to have lots to polish the dance. We had lesson 1 in Oct, 2 in Nov, 3 in Dec, & 4 in Jan, but we never ended up having lesson 5 in Feb b/c Mehmet was not responsive to our texts. This could have been resolved had he agreed to see us on a consistent night each month like we originally requested. He finally responded after I followed up 3x & asked if we could do Wed, 3/2. Even though it was a bad night for us (we had my mom's birthday dinner), we said yes b/c it had been so hard to schedule w/ him. It was also a little disappointing that he asked us to send him the video he took of our dance b/c he apparently, forgot the choreography. 1.5 hours before our lesson, he texted us that he was sick & had to cancel. While are 100% glad he would cancel if sick, he said nothing about re-scheduling & merely asked us to call the owner, Suzie. My fiancé called her, & she said Mehmet had told her the choreography for our dance was done! We still have over a minute of our dance left that has not been choreographed!!! My fiancé asked if she could complete the dance, & she said she had too much on her plate to fulfill Mehmet's obligations. While she did offer to try & find someone else to finish the dance, we informed her that we have been so disappointed w/ the whole experience that we would rather go somewhere more professional. Now, we are behind on our scheduled lessons & having to find a new studio. We have a 1st lesson w/ another studio this week, where the lessons will be $15.00 more per lessons, but we are fine w/ paying more for a studio that is more reliable & trustworthy. Long story short, Oh La La seems to have great reviews for group clases for children, but planning a wedding is stressful enough. We thought our dance lessons would be something fun to do together, but thanks to Oh La La, it's turned out to be one of the more stressful parts of wedding planning. For anyone looking for private lessons for a wedding 1st dance, please heed our cautionary tale & go elsewhere! I'm giving 2 stars b/c we mostly like the 2 minutes of choreography we do have but are very disappointed that Mehmet not only lied to us when he promised to complete our dance but then also lied to the owner, Suzie, by telling her he completed our dance when he never did!

My 5 year old Just started going to Ooh La La. She loves dance and had begged me to be a ballerina!…read moreWe did their summer camp and are now taking classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and a part of their competition team, Mini Mob. I was looking for a studio that was welcoming to a child with little dance experience, but still willing to give them a chance and work with them to perform on stage for competition. A competing dance studio said their try outs were demanding and wasn't sure my kid would cut it. They also played music that wasn't very age appropriate. At Ooh La La, the owner's biggest belief is to provide a welcoming place for all. She made all the parents sign a commitment form stating there is no drama at this academy. She said we applaud every dancer's successes and help those who need some extra TLC. It is exactly the right philosophy for how I wanted to introduce my daughter to her first sport. And a couple of weeks in, I already see. The teachers are working with me to help get my daughter her extra TLC and my daughter is learning from older teenage dancers that she thinks are just the most beautiful ballerinas. Thank you for having a great studio!

The class sizes are small, the teachers are completely invested in the children, and we wholeheartedly believe in the staff and all teachers. TCS is a Reggio Emilia school, that breeds a deep community of connectedness within the parent group, as well as student to teacher group. Our kids are absolutely thriving and their creativity is soaring! We couldn't be happier with the child-centered, hands-on project based and environmental curriculum. This educational experience is second to none!

The most impressive part is that was three years ago, and each day since has been equally as wonderful. As a mother of a Kindergartener, I value the consistent positive energy of the staff, and their prioritization of social and emotional well being, specifically during these very impressionable early childhood years. There is a strong connection between staff and students, as well as staff and parents. There is a strong connection amongst the community as well, fostered by the rare privilege of an open campus environment for parents. Drop off and pickup feel like a family gathering through and through. We as parents also learn from the very experienced teachers as well, via our children. The teachers model strong communication skills and encourge friends to "send messages," to one another during challenging as well as happy times. They teach "whole body listening," where friends are encouraged to engage their minds, ears as well as their hearts. Collaborative problem-solving builds resilience and community from a very young age, and differences are celebrated in this inclusive environment. The culture embodies kindness and mindfulness, and there is no better fit for our family.
