Wow. We had some high hopes for this place. The outside was cute, they had live music playing on the patio, and their menu was promising. However, half our order wasn't even correct and we didn't have anyone consistently waiting on us, as they were so short staffed, and our waiter was very unprofessional. I ordered a Tom Collins, but received a Sex on the Beach, I'm assuming, based upon what I could taste. The waiter brought it out, he noticed it wasn't the correct drink, so he brought it back to the bar, and thirty seconds later, brought out the exact same drink again. I gave up trying. We ordered two appetizers, and only received one. My husband's main entree was cold, I ordered the southwest chicken bites as an entree, and only received chicken tenders. No one came to check in on us consistently, no one refilled water glasses, the waiter looked and spoke to us unprofessionally (like, would literally leave in the middle of speaking to us), and the only other worker I saw looked so stressed out. The place looked so run down too. The women's bathroom literally had a whole tub in it, the sink was rusted, and the hot water tap in the sink didn't even work, so I hope the employees have another sink with access to hot water so they can properly wash their hands. Management needs to update the decor and the bathrooms. They also either need to get their asses out on the floor to assist, or turn people away if their servers are overworked and untrained like this. I love supporting small businesses, so I hate making reviews like this, but this was the worst meal we had our whole trip. Disappointed to say the least. read more

We were recommended to try this restaurant and it was so interesting! The history of this mansion that was turned into a restaurant was super interesting to read about. Based on the decor and some of the original structure, you can tell that it used to be a home. As for the food, it was nice and quite satisfying. My husband had the ribeye steak and I had the salmon. Both were very good! Our server was very nice and friendly. We were celebrating my birthday and I was given a tiramisu birthday cake on the house! That was super kind. Surprisingly great place with a view of Lake Superior. We sat on the front porch. There was a band playing in the outdoor patio next door and the summer weather was so nice. I am from Wisconsin so when I hear supper club, I have an expectation. This place did not meet my definition of a supper club. There is no salad bar, no three bean salad, potato salad, and cole slaw on the table. That being said, we had a good experience. On arrival, we did not have a reservation. It would appear that a reservation would be a good thing because without one, we threw the host a curveball. No problem though, he politely sat us down in an area outside of the main room, which was ok for us as a family of 6, this gave us our own space to be a bit louder than the more prim and proper area filled with older clientele. They have a great selection of beverages as well as a good drink menu. Their food is priced a bit steep. I understand that all food in 2026 is expensive, but it would appear $5 less on some of the plates would have made a better impression. The preparation of the food was excellent. We had two Medium Rare steaks on our table and both were Med Rare. The other plates at our table were shrimp, juicy and not chewy and overcooked, breaded walleye, flakey and lightly breaded, and salmon with a honey glaze. All came out hot and well made. The baked potatoes were well made, clean skin, butter and sour cream for fixings. Overall it was great. Not what a Wisconsin guy would expect for a supper club, but good food and kind service. read more

This place was terrible. We came through on the 4th of July. There was a concert outside so it seemed maybe nice. They did not get a single thing right. My wife ordered a Tom Collins and they came out with some random pink drink and the bartender realized it was the wrong drink and said he would be right back with the correct one. Then 10 minutes later came back with the exact same wrong drink and disappeared. The waiter stopped by maybe twice when we were right in the path of where he kept walking and he ignored the table. I got the steak with a side of mac and both were ice cold when I got it. My wife ordered southwest chicken bites but got some random chicken strips. Non of us got our salads. They missed an entire appetizer. We decided to come here when there was an hour wait for angry trout. Should have just waited for angry trout. Highly recommend going anywhere else. The staff were rude and inexperienced. The food was garbage or not even the correct order. They don't know how to make mixed drinks. And there wasn't anyone around to fix it either so we just ate it, unfortunately paid for whatever it is we didn't get and left. Will never be back and recommend nobody waste their time and money here. read more

We had high hopes for our visit here - it's such a cute house-turned-restaurant with a great outdoor space and live music! Unfortunately, service and timeliness left us disappointed. We booked a 6pm reservation and arrived on time - while the interior is old-timey and cozy, we opted for the patio where live music was playing. We were able to get a table for our group of 7, and the waiter took our drink and app orders. We waited 20+ minutes for our beers - some of our group even went inside to order right from the bar instead. Once we got our drinks, we put in our dinner order We were loving the musician and views, but after 45 minutes started to worry about our app timeliness - with a little one, we were on a bit of a timeline for their bedtime. Our server didn't come back with any update, so we went to find her and ask about the apps. Around 15 minutes later, they were out - about an hour into our time there. It took another half hour or so to get our dinner, leaving us all pretty frustrated. The service was unattentive and unapologetic about the amount of time we waited. The food itself was great - I enjoyed my crispy wings, and others liked their meals (especially the burger). However, the lack of attentive service and slow wait times means we won't be visiting here again when we return to the North Shore. read more

Stopped at Birch Terrace @3P on Monday 7/28. Decided to go to lounge for a drink, then head to supper club section for early dinner. Ordered an Old Fashion & a Cosmoplitan listed on their signature cocktail list. Bartender was prompt, but drinks were mediocre. The lounge however was kind of disgusting, and needs some serious cleaning and remodeling. The carpeting was filthy with stains and table was sticky; including the lounge had a bad smell. Also, the old style rolling lounge chairs were worn out and dirty. After we finished our drinks, we headed to the supper club to have dinner. The Supper Club itself has a charming old style atmosphere, which which appeared to be converted from an old mansion. Besides the dining room seating, they also offer seating In an enclosed porch overlooking Lake Superior, including a few outdoor open porch tables surrounded by plants which also overlook Lake Superior. At the Supper Club we both ordered Moscow Mules off their cocktail list, which were made well. Their online menu does not match what is available on their actual menu, which led us to pick the choices that we actual made for dinner. For my dinner I ordered a garden salad, deep fried prawns with crispy hash browns which were good. My wife had ordered a salad also, and a medium rare ribeye. The ribeye however was not prepared properly. It turned out well done and rubbery. When they brought the steak out; it was brought out with A1 & Heinz 57 that we did not ask for. (You don't need steak sauce for a good properly seasoned and cooked steak) This did not taste like a fresh steak; and did not taste like it was cooked with any seasoning. Possibly thawed from frozen, left to thaw too long, then overcooked. We did not try to order and dessert or after dinner drinks, due to receiving such a poor steak.The service in the Supper Club was decent though. Considering our experience, we would not consider going back to the lounge; and probably not to the Supper Club due to the bad steak dinner that we received. read more

This is the most underrated restaurant in Grand Marais. The atmosphere is charming, the service friendly and the food delicious. It is an icon of the town where the governor of Minnesota signed the legislation for the development of the Gunflint Trail the 1920s. It's definitely worth a visit for the atmosphere alone. It took 2 hours for our food to finally arrive. After an hour and a half of waiting for our food they can to our table to tell us they didn't have enough food to make one of our dishes. The place was not busy and as a former server, I'm VERY aware of situations that might hinder service. This was just poor service!!! When our food finally did arrive, it was mediocre at best. The spaghetti was dry, the brisket was not worth the $, the shrimp was TERRIBLE and incredibly fishy tasting. I would give this place zero stars if I could. read more

My wife and I ate dinner here expecting it to be good, but unfortunately it was rather awful. I ordered the walleye dinner with a Caesar salad, and my wife ordered the pesto tortellini. Caesar salad was fine, but nothing special. Walleye was very dry with not much flavor. The pesto tortellini was very bland and quite disgusting honestly. I couldn't even eat it, I had to spit it out. We love Grand Marais, but won't be coming back here ever again. What a shame. The only positive thing I can say is the view overlooking the bay. read more

Horrible food, Horrible customer service. I ordered a ribeye medium rare. They brought out a well done piece of leather . I asked to send it back, waitress said it would be 45mins. I said fine I'll eat it I'm hungry. I ate most of it Bill came I told her again I didn't like it and thought I should get a discount. She came back and said no because I ate it. WTF It was a cheap cut, no cap! The farther I got into it the drier. My wife ordered a new York strip medium rare, it was well done as well but wasn't dried out. I returned to Birch Terrace after a 40-year hiatus! The place is still charming, with a variety of dining options (patio, main, sun porch)- most facing Superior. We were fortunate to be served by Umahan. She made our dining experience extra special. From where we were seated we could hear the live music provided by the Folk Art Center. We enjoyed the beef brisket and a "few" Old Fashions! There is a separate bar connected to Birch Terrace that also has a patio. read more

The mansion on the hill. I really wanted to try a different restaurant on this trip. We got there before the crowd, I had the most delicious, lightly breaded white fish. I got the sandwich with no bread and the dinner has 2 pieces. I got a side salad with a good blue cheese dressing. My waitress was a summer help from Romania and she was very nice. There is a great history to this place. Used to be a private home of a wealthy trader. The bathroom is still intact with the bathtub. They should fill it with plants for a nice touch. An old style sink too. They leave doors open to get a nice breeze and they have an indoor patio. I can't wait to go back next year. read more

Tried the lounge since restaurant will not open till June 1. Wife and I had cheese burgers with fresh fried chips and onion rings. Burgers were generous with great bins and all the fixings. Best burger I have had in Grand Marais. David Larsen , an owner, gave us a great welcome and made sure everything was good. Can't wait to try the restaurant. Today, June 2, 2017, we returned to try the restaurant. We were seated at a table overlooking the harbor. We both ordered the BBQ baby back ribs. They were meaty and nicely smoked. Wife thought they were abut too spicy, but I liked them just that way. Our waitress was very nice and made sure everything was just right. There was one other couple there at 6 pm on a Friday night. We stopped by after a day up in the snow on the Gunflint trail and wanted something warm and maybe a slice of cake or pie. Apparently it is too much to ask. This place as a cocktail lounge and a restaurant. The cocktail lounge is furnished in a sixties kind of fashion with carpet everywhere and fabric stuffed armchairs. The result is a bit of a dusty and dead atmosphere. They have nothing warm: no tea, no hot chocolate, no mulled something, no irish coffee. They offered to get coffee from the restaurant, but I happen not to drink coffee. My BF on the other hand had a beer. A regular Coors light, not much in terms of microbrewery or "gourmet" beer choices. It is sad that they are so old-styled and they don't offer much in the way of afternoon snack, because they have an awesome deck and veranda overlooking the harbor. I would love to stop there in the afternoon and have a slice of cake and enjoy the view. I guess in summer when you can sit outside drinking something cold I would have a better experience. But in simmer there are so many other decks with a view.... They should really use that veranda better. read more

Nice atmosphere of an historic old home. Food wasn't great. I had the pork chop which was supposed to be an 8 ounce. When it came it was a thin porkchops with the bone still in it and there was probably 2 ounces or 3 ounces of meat at the very most. My husband had the cranberry chicken which was bland. Never did get any bread, and had to ask for my drink . Not worth the money. The waiter suggested the brisket or the shrimp, so maybe take his suggestions. To be honest when my family went here we were expecting a very nice meal and we were expecting to pay quite a bit for it also. Well we did pay quite a bit but the meal was not very nice. The steak I ordered was burnt badly and the veggies on the side were dried out and hard to eat. On yelp I usually give places good ratings but this place just does not live up to low expectations. Our favorite! We had 3 dinners in Grand Marais and this was the best! Yummy stuffed mushroom appetizer; the accompanying horseradish sauce was tasty and did not overwhelm the mushrooms. The salad was a step above usual - excellent quality veggies. The 14 oz walleye was terrific. The pot de chocolate was soooo yummy! The only food that wasn't impressive was the French onion soup, which was good, just not as stellar as everything else. The service was a little slow, but we arrived less than an hour before closing, and they had a clambake that evening, so there had been bigger crowds than usual. The building is old, but lovely. The waitress, who was also the manager, was very pleasant. We'll definitely be back! read more

What was supposed to be a nice night out turned into a long drawn out disappointment. On the positive note - the service was good. Now for all the bad - the vegetables were listed as "season mixed vegetable" but what was delivered to the table was re-heated frozen mixed vegs. The rice side dish was served cold (no cool but cold) indicating that at best it was cooked the day before and reheated. All of this was after waiting 70 minutes for our food after the order was taken. For $20+ entree restaurant I can not remember the last time I was this disappointed. read more
