I would like to take a moment and review Birchwood Kennels. I have not boarded any of my dogs in years. I called a couple of vets, including my own, to make a recommendation and they recommended Birchwood. They are precise with their instructions and the paperwork was online. The day of drop off went smoothly. They had it down to a science. You pulled around the area and they came out and got the dogs unloaded. I was in and out in no time. We have left our dog here several times. They are very nice and helpful. They send pictures to us, of our dog while we are on vacation. My dog is very picky. He would only eat cat food, when we first started leaving him here. They introduced him to cottage cheese, he eats it along with a few other things, now. They do a great job with hair cuts, too. Wonderful boarding and grooming! Siren did a wonderful job grooming both of my terriers and Dave is always welcoming and friendly!

I would give this place zero stars if that was an option. I have two dealings with this place and not only will I obviously never use him again, I warn people to run away as fast as possible. Our latest example was my girlfriend took her dog for a two night stay as the owner indicated you must pick up the dog by 5:30. She returned around 7 and I called to see if we could pick up the dog since we returned faster than we thought. We even agreed to pay for the 2nd night even though we would be picking him up. The woman I spoke with said she didn't think that would be an issue and she would have the owner call us in a few minutes. I told her we lived literally about 1 mile away and they were obviously working as I could hear dogs in the background. The owner called back a few minutes later to my girlfriend and made some lame excuse about his checks were locked up for the night. First of all, we would not have even been paying with a check and we could have pay cash or credit. I'm not sure if he was just too lazy to walk 10 feet from his house or what this guys deal was so we had to leave our dog overnight. I hadn't realized that my parents had a very bad experience with this place a few years back with our dog. Even on his voicemail, this guy sounds like a complete jerk. It is probably good that I was not there when we picked up the dog or I would have had some choice words for this power tripping, jerk. PLEASE TAKE YOUR BUSINESS AND SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR FRIENDS. If he treats his paying customers this way, I shutter to think how he treats my dogs. Good riddance read more

I was traveling and needed a place for my dog to stay for 10 days. This was the best rated place, looked it up and booked it. Though I was nervous as it was the first place for my dog to stay that wasn't a family home, he sure seemed so happy when I dropped him off and picked him up. I have been taking my dog here for about four years now. I have had nothing but excellent service and communications. My dog was a new rescue dog and in her first trip away from me was anxious and chewed their gate rope into. Dave was great about it and worked with her to relieve her anxiety. Additionally about a year ago my home was broken into in the middle of the night and my non-aggressive dog ran him out ... so do you think I would leave her with anyone but the best care? I've had the pleasure of living in Memphis, Nashville, and now Knoxville over the last several years, and I can say that Birchwood has been the best kennel that we have found in Tennessee! When we moved to Knoxville early last year, we needed a kennel for our Puggle. A friend highly recommended Birchwood to us, and now we would not think of taking our dog anywhere else. Rob (owner), Dave, and the rest of the staff there are top notch, and you can tell that they truly care about every one of their "guests." Our dog absolutely loves Birchwood and the staff, and this has been the only place we've found like that. On commenters that have left less than stellar reviews, I would say that Birchwood's pricing is extremely reasonable, and it has been very much in line with pricing policies (weekends/check-out times) that we have seen in our experiences across TN. For the quality of service received, I honestly expected to pay more. Also, I know that there are 2-sides to every story, so an angry comment or voicemail recorded and posted on the internet may not tell the complete story. The owner (Rob) and staff (Dave & crew) have been nothing but exceptional. I feel like if I ever did have a concern, I could easily discuss this with them in person, and we could resolve it quickly. That's what I look for in great customer service, and that's what I get at Birchwood. Again, as someone relatively new to Knoxville and not new to kennels, I would highly recommend Birchwood Kennels to anyone that cares about their dog! read more

I have had my Maine Coon of 12 years stay here for almost half her life while I travel quite frequently, as I don't feel comfortable leaving her at home by herself. My cat is the most important thing to me and I would not even consider letting her stay anywhere but here. I was a little anxious when I first let her stay here for a couple days, as she is a very meek and shy kitty. I called several times during her first time there to make sure she was doing okay, and the owners, Dave and Rob, where nothing but accommodating! They were more than happy to talk to me and they let me know about her days there and how she was doing. She came home and she didn't seem scared whatsoever despite her rough ride there. Over the years I kept boarding her there and she has gotten very familiar with them. Recently, we got another Maine Coon kitten and boarded him for the first time. I was very worried about him and how he would do with it being his first time in a new environment. Again I called several times during my trip to make sure he was okay and Dave even sent me pictures of both of them! They both looked very happy and taken care of. He was perfectly fine when he got home and they said that he even made friends with some of the other cats! Another thing to also consider while boarding cats is where they're kept in the kennel. Some kennels I tried before I found Birchwood put the cats too close to the dogs. That's not something I felt comfortable with, so when I found out that Birchwood keeps them in a separate room from the dogs, I felt much better. This kennel provides nothing less than exceptional service and pricing, and is very personal with you and your animals. If you or someone you know owns cats (and dogs of course) definitely consider this kennel. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about Birchwood. I have 3 dogs and they treat them so well! Our Malinois had a cut on her foot when I dropped her off to be boarded and they took good care of her. Knowing how hyper she is, somehow she got out of her cone and chewed out her stitches. The staff called and notified me, took her to the vet, and even got her a puppacino on the way back to the kennels! My oldest dog is very people shy but they took great care of him and he loves the staff! Every time I board them they send me videos of him during play time just loving on the handlers. Honestly a great place with great people. I never have to worry about my fur babies when I leave them at Birchwood. read more

This is the best kennel around!! Crazy clean, super nice, very professional and they took amazing care of our 2 dogs while we were away. We got them back clean and happy as can be! We called to check in on our dogs and were greeted by David Boone with tons of patience and kindness as he understood we were worried our older dog wouldn't eat while we were away, David even sent me a video and pics of our dog eating his food! Used this place for the first time when my dog needed a last minute overnight stay. They were very nice people, and the facility seemed lovely. My dog seemed happy and familiar with the kennel staff by the time I picked her up, which makes me feel like they must've been sweet to her. She even got to run around their fenced-in yard for some extra play time. AND they offer Sunday pick ups! Overall, I trust that my dog had a good stay here, and I will recommend them. The 2 things that were slightly off to me are that she came home with a strong smell of baby powder (no biggie-dogs get smelly, but it was just a little much), and she had been fed the full 3 cups of food I brought her even though I asked them to only give 1 cup/feeding during a 2 feeding stay (also not a huge deal). read more

We had to board our tiny little silky terrier puppy (2.5lbs) unexpectedly for a week and were terrified to leave him! Once we visited Birchwood we knew we had found the perfect place! David was kind and eased all our fears. He was SO thorough and careful to make sure we were comfortable. My 4 yo was all upset and crying and they promised they would dress him in a cute blue bow when we picked him up...she thought that was funny. While we were gone they were kind enough to send pics and videos of our little Chip so we could see that he was doing well! Many of these were after hours so I know he was watching and caring for him the entire time. And of course when we picked him up he was wearing a cute blue bow!! We would not board our puppy anywhere else! (I read the one star review posted on this page and I CANNOT imagine David being a jerk. We have had two interactions with hm now and he has always been MORE than helpful!!) read more
