This is a tough call, but their neighboring rival La Torrefazione in Kluuvi is still the best in terms of overall quality. Kuuma has the best takeaway cups though - much better than anywhere else. However, they need to try harder to reach the level of other places. Coffee is good, attitude seems complacent. Go here for excellent takeaway coffee, but go somewhere else if you intend to sit down for a more pleasurable, customer-focused experience. Kuuma = great takeout coffee, but not worth a stay.

The photos of Loyly from a NYT travel article were part of what prompted me to include Finland on a recent trip around Scandanavia. We went on a grey, early Fall day, so I can't speak to what it's like in the summer, but I thought it was over-hyped. From the moment you enter it is very chaotic, probably because it is on every traveler "must visit" list. The bar area is right at the entrance and it is loud and crowded. It would probably be better on a warm summer day when everyone is outside instead of in the doorway. Loyly has three separate areas: the sauna area, the bar/casual outdoor dining, and the restaurant. We opted for the outdoor dining because we did not make reservations and the restaurant was already full very early in the evening. I didn't realize in advance that there are a few items on the restaurant menu that are not on the outdoor dining menu, namely the reindeer, which is what we were mainly interested in trying. We ended up with the elk meatballs and the salmon soup, which were both delicious and probably worth the high-ish price. I can't say I would be running back, but it's worth trying once. I would opt against the sauna area though, as it looked just as crowded as the restaurant and not at all relaxing.

There are several locations throughout the city but this is my favorite and they all feel like boutique bakeries. They have ready-made healthy meals in the refrigerator. I've had them two times and they're delicious. They also have lunch (haven't tried) and fresh juice and smoothies (major score in a city severely lacking such things). Plus, the people here are nice. Located in the city center of Helsinki and close to my hotel, after a long day of exploring, I was exhausted and hungry. Craving something casual that won't break the bank, I found Friends & Brgrs, which was better than expected. Friends & Brgrs serves smashed burgers with fries, shakes and everything else you'd expect from a fast food joint. But it's better than anything you'd have in the U.S. I visited during dinner time and the place was steady, with a few patrons dining inside. You order on the touchscreen and and grab a number where one of the employees delivers your tray of food to you. After asking the staff for recommendations, they said first timers should try their signature, Friends Burger, which is a classic cheese burger with all the usual toppings, with hand-cut fries and the truffle dipping sauce. My meal was solid. I was seriously impressed by how delicious the burger was from somewhere that's considered a fast food joint. I could easily tell the burger was hand-formed and cooked fresh upon order and the fries were hand-cut. Everything is freshly made here, including the baked buns. Everything just tastes better outside of the U.S. because they don't use trash ingredients - only fresh stuff approved by the EU. I'm a fan. I would totally eat more fast food if the food in the U.S. was like Friends & Brgrs.
