As I was searching up info on Crystal Caves for a similarly named national park, I happened upon…read morethis one. The day I paid a visit it had just rained a bit in the afternoon then cleared out for the rest of the evening. Up above this hillcrest on any given day I suspect would be ideal for watching the sunset or perhaps flying a kite. There was a consistent light breeze which felt refreshing, free from the congested traffic down below. Among the offerings include a baseball field, a modern jungle gym, basketball courts, and tennis courts. Specifically, tennis takes priority over pickleball. Further up the hill there's a small Japanese garden with a gazebo which while a bit worn out has a lot of charm. Street parking was plentiful and it never got really crowded. One thing I noticed was that my mobile network became somewhat spotty, but 'tis a minor inconvenience. If I'm free, I'd love to visit more often.

The stairs serves well as an easy hike or an exercise spot for those who love stair climbing. One thing I did not expect is that the stairs go up and down. Rather than take you higher and higher, some of the stairs just takes you across hills which for me is disappointing. Also, I did not find the houses along the trail particularly scenic. They are probably nice for Pasadena but definitely a far cry from what you see in nearby Arcadia, San Marino, La Canada, etc. Overall, I consider the Secret Stairs a local attraction. It's a worth a visit if you live less than 20 minutes away and its a fun neighborhood novelty but it's definitely not worth your time if you don't live in the area. Parking: I parked on the street on Elmwood which is the beginning of the trail, but I don't highly recommend it. It's not a particularly well maintained street and it is super narrow and steep without proper curbs/sidewalks. There is also a sign that says 'Tow Away on Red Flag Days'. Refer to the affixes picture. If I returned, I would either park on the street prior to Elmwood or just skip to a different segment.

The hike is has limited shade and it's challenging and strenuous, still people of all ages come to the trails. It's also dog friendly. The negative- parking , you have to beware of the signs on the street, the parking on premises is very limited and sometimes closed. Trail open at 9 am - 5 pm daily, for some, not possible to come after work. :( Other than that it's amazing and satisfying.

It's got that whole sloped setup, so you can climb up, pretend you're earning your post-snack calories, and then chill at the top like you've conquered something. The view's nice, especially if you're holding a boba or street tacos like a true Monterey Park foodie!! At night though? That's when it redeems itself. The lights come on, everything glows, and suddenly it's giving romantic picnic energ even if the waterfall is still ghosting you.

I could see this being a great spot to take photos or just enjoy a book on one of the benches. There are also some stairs so you could get some steps in if you took a few loops around. Great place for a hike and definitely a hidden gem from when I lived down the hill growing up…read more To get there, you drive all the way up the hill and you'll find a park with plenty of parking. There are a few different trail options--on the right side, the path is more paved and easy to walk (no hiking sticks needed). The left trail is more of a hillside route and is a bit more challenging, where hiking sticks would be helpful. The hike starts off with a fairly steep incline for about the first 8 minutes or so, but then it levels out and the rest is pretty easy--great for getting your steps in. If you want an extra challenge, stay on the left trail for more elevation gain. The views of Los Angeles at the top are beautiful, and in the mornings you'll see plenty of dog walkers enjoying the area. Coyotes are present, so be aware, but they generally keep their distance and doesn't bother anyone. Restrooms are currently closed due to construction of new facilities, so plan accordingly. If you want an extra workout, park at the very bottom of the street and walk up to the trailhead. Overall, it's a great hike for friends--easy to chat, enjoy the scenery, and get a solid LA view and workout at the same time.

I loved how there was a designated free parking area. We went on a Saturday evening and there was plenty of parking. I love how it also feels like an easy hiking trail with lots of greenery trees and plants to see. We walked around the park and it led up to a beautiful view of Los Angeles with the sunset. It was truly so peaceful and enjoyable throughout the trail. I loved every bit of. It was also super clean - no trash to be seen so I am so happy the community does their part in taking care of this park. I am definitely going to come back here and take my parents.

What I really love is that it feels like a hidden gem right in the middle of the city. There's plenty of parking, and the park itself is kept pretty clean. The big payoff is at the top--the views of Downtown LA and Dodger Stadium are absolutely beautiful and worth the climb. The only downside is the restrooms. I personally wouldn't use them since there are often homeless people around that area, but it doesn't take away from how enjoyable the trail is overall. If you're looking for a quick hike with gorgeous city views and a spot that's not overly crowded, Ascot Hills is definitely worth checking out.
