I discovered Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep) on my most recent trip to Rio (Nov 2015, yep, I'm writing…read morethis while waiting in the airport to, sadly, depart). I've rarely drank champagne while in Brasil; when traveling, I usually stick to the local stuff, and sparkling stuff isn't something Brasil is known for. We ended up going there twice. Bottles of bubbles are available starting at R$35 for the domestic stuff and upwards from there for products of Spain, Italy, France, etc. There are glasses available for R$15, but the emphasis is on the bottles that come in an ice bucket. That domestic stuff isn't all that bad. All this in a cool old building in an old neighborhood. Monday night there was slow, maybe about 12 people including us. The owner said to come back on Thursday, so I did. Around 7:30p the place was packed beyond capacity, replete with heavy consumption and the types of people who don't like bumping into everyone else's champagne buckets. Yep, while the DJ cranked old-school hip-hop videos, some squabbles erupted. I'm not sure of the Portuguese word for "shit-show," but you get the idea. The consumption-card system, which requires payment at the end opposite the exit, exacerbated the melee. Ovelha Negra is definitely worth a stop on your Rio trip, but if it looks packed inside, there are a bunch of other cool bars in the area worth checking out too.

Basically you order a bottle of champagne and they bring it out to you in a bucket of ice. Pretty straight forward, and it was pretty good. There's food too, but I didn't eat anything. The big downside to this place is that it's very small. And they have a long table running down the middle of the room with stools all around it. So it gets very very crowded, which makes it hard to move and harder to order more champagne. This place seems to be frequented only by Brazilians (probably because it's in kind of an out-of-the-way [ie not near the beach] building in Botafogo). If you're looking to mix with some locals - here's your place.

We wanted to go on a food adventure, so we used Trip Advisor to find us a good restaurant in the Rio area. We found Zot and then proceeded to order about seven different dishes to share between four people. (Hey, we wanted to try as much as we can; that's what a true food adventure is!) Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The chef here really knows how to cook meat, whether it's beef, duck, chicken, or fish. You're guaranteed to have a tender melt-in-your-mouth bite every time. And speaking of the chef, he is amazing and super friendly and will make the effort to come out and greet his diners. (He speaks pretty good English, too -- bonus!) Their menu changes every so often, so you may not have the same food if you end up returning. The lesson here is that, no matter what you order, you can't really go wrong. My favorites of the night, though, were the ceviche, tapioca cubes, duck, and Argentinian dessert.

Its a small little place that people go mainly for wine and they do have a variety both in choices as well as price range. Food wise, I love their ceviche and since its appetiser size, this has been somewhat of a standard order. However, its inconsistent. The first time I had it, it was absolute fabulous! The second time, not so much. Ordered it again after that and it was OK... I need to manage my expectations :p Had their food/sampler platters before but there were nothing to shout about. Their gnocchi was OK. Their bolinho with duck was recommended but I did not find it interesting at all. No offence, but I do not think people here do duck very well (except for that one that I had in Ipanema... forgot the name of the restaurant, MUST go back!). Like I said, I have not been back there in a while, but from my previous visits, I do remember that I love their desserts! :-) ice cream/ chocolate cake with pepper :) There were not that many dessert items on their menu, but I remember loving them all... Oh, and there was once that I went and there was a lady signing back up by keyboards :) Wonder if they still do that.....

The restaurant is so well-designed, the perfect balance of classy and sexy. Lots of black, mirrors, and dim lighting, combined with floor-to-ceiling windows and greenery. The entrance has a fish pond with carp. The open kitchen allows you to see the chefs at work. We enjoyed first sitting on the open-air deck and taking photos. I had the caipichamp (a champagne cocktail with pineapple and lemon grass) and LOVED it. We also had the passion fruit caipirinha and lychee caipisake (like a capirinha but made with sake). The food was better than I expected given descriptions of this place as an "Asian lounge" (which tends to make me think of overpriced and uncreative Asian fusion). We had the octopus sashimi, salmon tataki (both were very fresh), scallop sushi, and crab dumplings (enjoyed these - very creative, with a coconut-based filling).

My total dissatisfaction at the end of the three hour torture was met with another manager lie: manager claimed to adjust R$1000 bill but instead pulled a Marie Antoinette and offered cake to diabetic me. Obnoxious management and thoroughly disappointing food served with incompetence.

I ordered-- Entrée- green salad, which had tomato, carrot, hard bolded egg, corn and a tasty, light dressing. Main dish- grilled fish with herbs and butter with broccoli rice. Dessert- chocolate mousse with condensed milk on top. --everything was delicious and I was very satisfied. Here is the kicker, they have a wine cellar! In the back of the restaurant, there are over 2,000 labels with wines from every region. The wine advisor nudged us into ordering a half bottle of a French red wine. Usually fish doesn't go with red wine, but she was right, this paired just fine with my fish (I am not a fan of white wine). It was priced at R$36, but they gave it to us at a discounted rate of R$20. The patio upstairs was not open while I was there for lunch, but I have walked by in the evening and it always seems lively. The ambiance was great. Nice big windows and a good crowd. I definitely recommend this place.
