I discovered Ovelha Negra (Black Sheep) on my most recent trip to Rio (Nov 2015, yep, I'm writing…read morethis while waiting in the airport to, sadly, depart). I've rarely drank champagne while in Brasil; when traveling, I usually stick to the local stuff, and sparkling stuff isn't something Brasil is known for. We ended up going there twice. Bottles of bubbles are available starting at R$35 for the domestic stuff and upwards from there for products of Spain, Italy, France, etc. There are glasses available for R$15, but the emphasis is on the bottles that come in an ice bucket. That domestic stuff isn't all that bad. All this in a cool old building in an old neighborhood. Monday night there was slow, maybe about 12 people including us. The owner said to come back on Thursday, so I did. Around 7:30p the place was packed beyond capacity, replete with heavy consumption and the types of people who don't like bumping into everyone else's champagne buckets. Yep, while the DJ cranked old-school hip-hop videos, some squabbles erupted. I'm not sure of the Portuguese word for "shit-show," but you get the idea. The consumption-card system, which requires payment at the end opposite the exit, exacerbated the melee. Ovelha Negra is definitely worth a stop on your Rio trip, but if it looks packed inside, there are a bunch of other cool bars in the area worth checking out too.

Basically you order a bottle of champagne and they bring it out to you in a bucket of ice. Pretty straight forward, and it was pretty good. There's food too, but I didn't eat anything. The big downside to this place is that it's very small. And they have a long table running down the middle of the room with stools all around it. So it gets very very crowded, which makes it hard to move and harder to order more champagne. This place seems to be frequented only by Brazilians (probably because it's in kind of an out-of-the-way [ie not near the beach] building in Botafogo). If you're looking to mix with some locals - here's your place.

Although this small airport SDU at Bossa Nova mall isn't far from our airport. But it doesn't seem to be walkable. So we took Uber. The view out to the Enseada da Gloria is beautiful, especially at sunset. The restaurant is huge, with many sections. We got there at 6:50, must be too early, the restaurant was empty. We sat near the bar, as the sun went down. The service is good. We've The ox rib and spicy tuna. The big chunk of ox rib is tender but salty. The mushroom rice isn't fully cooked, and they added some cream. Please pretty please, don't mess with my rice, just fully cook it with water. (Guess this is hard ...). The tuna isn't fresh. The rice they used is better than the side, the mushroom rice.

My total dissatisfaction at the end of the three hour torture was met with another manager lie: manager claimed to adjust R$1000 bill but instead pulled a Marie Antoinette and offered cake to diabetic me. Obnoxious management and thoroughly disappointing food served with incompetence.

My husband had the fish and plantain moqueca, and the fish was so tender that it just melted in your mouth. Both were delicious! The main difference was that my sauce contained cashews and the cashew flavor was quite strong according to my husband. So if you're allergic to nuts, make sure you ask for an English menu to double-check the ingredients. They also asked if we had any food restrictions when they seated us which was nice. We tried three different mocktails. I forgot the names but one was pineapple & passion fruit, another was coconut, and I forgot what the last one was. They were all good! The chocolate cake with chocolate syrup was delish (10/10). Sweet but not overly sweet and it was so moist, warm, and rich. I just wish I had more room to eat more!!!

Honorable mentions: Shredded Beef Rice- was delicious. Rice cooked to perfection and the beef had amazing flavor. Joaquina's picadinho- beef was a salty for my taste but flavors were delicious. Tapioca Shrimp- these were sooo good appetizers. Good size shrimps and the flavors were delicious. Pasteis (shrimp)- delicious! Came with 2 smaller empanada-type pastries. We wanted to order Pork Rinds and Mini Shrimp Burgers but ran out early that day. We ate around 8 pm so go earlier if you want to try. Definitely a great culinary experience.
