Both were good, but had their flaws. -The schnitzel Scandinavia was dry but the sauce was very good. -The Traditional breaded pork cutlet I had was very good but I found the sauce was too lemon forward for my liking. -The spaetzel was good, I like a little less nutmeg. -The cabbage was spot on and very flavorful. Overall a good experience but be sure to make reservations early as they didn't have many spots available and we saw them turn people away. read more

It's been a few years since I've been to Fairmont and ate at the Black Forest restaurant. Have had the Schnitzel Champigon and at that time it had a dark mushroom sauce which I loved and remembered. Last year when we came I had ordered the same Schnitzel but it came with a bearnaise sauce and I didn't enjoy it because of the taste. So this year on Wednesday May 20th I had asked the waitress if I could have a different gravy (should have said sauce). I was told that they didn't have that. When I said they used to she informed me it has NEVER come with that type of sauce. To me it felt like she was arguing the point with me. She then said do you want another server and I said no that's fine. She walked away and a short time later another waitress (Grace) came to serve us. The first waitress obviously didn't want to serve me and I felt this very insulting. I then ordered the Special which was the meatloaf, which had the type of sauce (gravy) I was asking for. If it wasn't for the very pleasant young girl who met and seated us at our table and Grace, the experience was very unpleasant and upsetting to a point that I was not going to come back. read more

I have been coming here since I was little and it is just as special as an adult! I really love the decoration of the building and interior. Even if your food takes a while to arrive the ambience makes the time fly and you almost want it to take a few minutes extra to really enjoy your time here. I always get the mushroom Schnitzel and a soup of the day. Both are delicious- best schnitzel I've found in Canada and the sides pair so well with it. This time we didn't get to have dessert but I know their cheesecake is amazing! It's a little expensive but what can you do in this economy. A little tip is to make a reservation ahead and avoid wearing athletic gear or hats if you can per the restaurant request- it does help with the overall atmosphere. read more

We go to Invermere every September. We finally made a reservation at this restaurant. It was HORRIBLE. It was the worst dining experience we have had. We were seated at our table, asked a question about the wine menu, the waiter was dismissive. No mention of the specials. Said he would come back for our drink order, he came back twenty minutes later. The woman at the table across from us had the same question about the wines he spent ten minutes discussing the wine menu with her. We had to ask for water. Although we've passed this lovely looking establishment many times, this was our first visit and we were not disappointed. Our food was perfectly prepared and very delicious. My husband had the 3 course special that included a salad, a schnitzel with peppercorn sauce and a dessert. I ordered the Scandia schnitzel and shared his salad and dessert. However, it took longer than normal for us to meet our waitress and get our drink order. We then had to flag her down to get a water refill. For a restaurant who offers "dine in and take-out", they are a bit too strict on attire and other requirements from their customers. A fun place to see with the family! Albeit a little on the pricy side. I'm general, an overall pretty alright experience. The food was good but the portions were a little... "little" for the price. In any case, after parking you head up a few stairs, past a water feature and flower garden. As you walk through the large wooden (possibly hand crafted!) door, you're immediately greeted by welcoming staff who take you to an open table. The staff all wear fun, German themed outfits/uniforms that really do help visitors enjoy the experience! We tried a variety of things to make sure we covered the menu. The only item we didn't get to try was seafood, in particular the salmon soup. It was described to us as, "if you're a fan of salmon you'll love it! Otherwise, it's mighty strong." A nearby table had it and was quite impressed with it! The majority (if not all of the menu items) are made locally in house, from the red cabbage to sauerkraut, the available soups to the Black Forest cake. While on the topic of Black Forest cake... it looks lovely and tasted fine... however I had expected it to be THE Black Forest cake of all Black Forest cakes (the restaurant is ACTUALLY named "The Black Forest". Alas, it was not. The slice was fairly small for $10.50 and I'm not sure there was a single whole cherry anywhere. I was somewhat expecting a fifth of a full cake to be honest. But, to be fair, it was very flavourful and the cherry sauce on the plate was a wonderfully delicious addition. As for the building itself, there is plenty to see from the great artwork of Alfred Temmel to the taxidermised wildlife. There is even a room in the centre of the building with a hardwood "dance floor" that you can whisper up into then the sound bounces back and can be clearly heard by those underneath the dome! Dance it up while you're there. Great fun! I'm glad we went but can't say we'd make an effort to go again, but don't take my word for it. read more

A very unique restaurant! Drove by this restaurant and decided to stay. The overall style is what attracted me to check out this place. Looking at it made me feel like I was in Germany and going inside for the full dining experience brought me back to Europe. I love that the staff were "in-character" and they dressed nicely to fit the theme. I didn't like that there wasn't much vegetarian options on the menu but it's completely understandable seeing as they had authentic European menu items. Overall, found the restaurant to be on the pricier side, but you are paying for a dining experience as well with your meal. Food took a little long to come. Interiors were the best part for me. I enjoyed the bread and butter they served. The food was okay, but I did get to try Sauerkraut for the first time which I really ended up liking. read more

We were told about this restaurant, but we were hesitant because of some of the reviews we read. But all that aside we decided to give it a try... and we are so happy we did. We arrived around 6pm and though the restaurant was not full, we were told it was an hour wait... I was a little annoyed so I stepped away, one of the main servers approached the host and asked what was going on, he told her and she said "no we can put some tables together!" It was very nice. We were sat immediately. The food was great and our service was tops. I had the special, which was a three course meal. Soup or salad, main course and a dessert. The main course was a schnitzel with prawns and mash potatoes and broccoli. Everything was very well prepared. The presentation is also well done. I think if you take the time to present your food, you most likely took the same amount of detail in making your dish. If you are in the area and want to be taken to a Bavarian Chateau, come to Black Forest and escape. read more

We visited the Black Forest Restaurant today. We were greeted and seated and served water, shortly after, the waitress asked my husband if he minded removing his hat, he responded "yes I do" She then said it's dress code. Although nothing is stated on the website or at the door! We then asked, if he a Pakistani with a headress, would he be asked to remove it...her response was "well you're not". I then asked for a Manger, she responded she was the owner. When leaving, another patron shoved me and said "I'll hold the door for you, get out" He had no idea what had occurred but took it upon himself to assault me. (He was a tall man and I'm a 120 lb female) Kinda one sided and the so called "owner" just told me to leave. I wanted her to call the RCMP as I was just assaulted She said "no need, leave". I am sure, if my husband was of a different religion, it would have been overlooked. So prejudice is very prominent in this establishment, and i caution all ethnic groups to be aware! read more

This was the worst meal we have had during our BC staycation. We made reservations for 6:00 on June 27. This is a large restaurant. I think that there are 2 rooms upstairs and also seating downstairs. There is plenty of spacing between the tables because the room is huge. There is a large empty space in the centre of the room that would be appropriate for dancing. The room is decorated with a Bavarian theme and all the wait staff were also dressed in Bavarian outfits and wore face masks. My husband had the 3 course early bird special that offered soup or salad, entrée and dessert. My husband asked if he could have the featured entrée as his main course. He did not want to do the early bird special as he did not like the soup and wanted goulash soup. Our server said it would probably be better value for him to have the 3 course meal and substitute the goulash soup for the soup of the day. He decided to go with this option. Warm rolls were brought to the table with both garlic butter and regular butter. The goulash soup was very good and my husband thoroughly enjoyed it. Unfortunately it was all downhill after the soup. My husband's entrée was Madagascar schnitzel - schnitzel with peppercorn sauce. This was one of the smallest schnitzels that we've had at a German restaurant. The schnitzel seemed like it was a frozen, prepackaged piece of meal. The coating was more like a breading and not at all like schnitzels that we've had before. As well as it being a very meagre serving the schnitzel was really thin and dry. I had the pepper steak and although it was cooked as requested it was tough. The sauce on the steak and schnitzel was the same and it also tasted like it came out of a package. The chocolate cake for dessert was very dry. It was either left in the oven too long or was left over cake. It was very disappointing. We had dinner last night. Spent less money and had better food and service. Really happy we stopped in here last weekend! The service was excellent, our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and you could tell she genuinely loved working here! I had the steak and prawns and requested grilled prawns instead of breaded, and they were excellent. My husband had the filet mignon and he said it was cooked perfectly. My NY strip was also cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the side portions were both generous and delicious. The French onion soup was very good as well. Overall, it was a bit pricey (around the same as the Keg), but I feel it was definitely worth it, considering the excellent service, delicious food and very generous portion sizes. One of my fav German Restaurant in the area. The food is really good but the service could be better. Maybe our server was having an off night but she seemed really annoyed and impatient with taking others and when other tables were asking for stuff. I thing I love about this place is the cute old man that is dressed in his lederhosen and plays his accordian and handbells to entertain the guest on weekends when it gets busy. He totally makes the ambience of the restaurant. We shared the soup of the day- chowder and it was so delicious. The salmon was soft and cooked perfectly and nice and rich. Wow the service here is quite bad. It's too bad because the food is pretty good, prices are high. It took so much time to get an order in and to get our servers attention for anything even a water refill, the bill, an extra menu to look at more stuff. There was only 10 tables 3 servers and two bus people so I don't think that was overdoing it to be honest. I know it's Covid and all but you would think having three tables wouldn't cause such bad service. May go back?? This place is truly an experience, the waiter and waitresses dressed in German clothing from 60s beautiful dresses. The desserts are awesome my boyfriend had the caramel pudding I had the Black Forest Cake and the ice cream with homemade raspberry compote. For dinner I had the mermaid salad which was Caesar salad and prawns in mushroom and white wine reduction so good. The other half ordered the schnitzel which he wouldn't even try a bite of what a guy. I tried it and was just ok. We were really looking forward to dining here. My husband called in the morning to leave a reservation and was never called back, so he tried again in the afternoon. The person that answered said he could make a reservation, he asked for 5:30, and they said ok. Then he said it was for 4 plus one infant, and they very rudely said they couldn't accommodate us. Firstly, this restaurant (and its predecessor) is a true institution in the Columbia Valley. I remember driving by here with my parents 25 years ago - but it is now located in a new building. Whatever it is they are doing, it is obviously working - despite my tepid review (as you'll see below) - it is always packed, even in the off season. Secondly, I love eating out for German food. I find that it is not complicated food, but getting it "right" is something that often eludes restaurants for various reasons. But if you get a few fundamentals right (i.e. a bad marinated cucumber salad is an instant "fail"), a German restaurant can easily become something I'll keep coming back to again and again for satisfying and hopefully-not-too-fattening food. Now, this place is good, but still several steps away from being perfect. While it satisfies the big things, it misses on the little things. I thought that my meal was great, but this restaurant misses the mark on the children's meals - they are expensive. This really bothered the wife, so much so that we are unlikely to go back here anytime soon. So, in conclusion, I would give this restaurant a good review overall - but not if you have kids. If you are a senior citizen, you will probably love it! read more

I'm not really sure what all the low reviews are for but we went here after the in-laws raved about it from their trip 4 years ago. They told us that the filet mignon was absolutely amazing and that they went twice for dinner. So we tried it out and I kept my expectations realistic since filet isn't my favorite cut of steak. Anyways, I ordered the Filet Neptune (think filet mignon with a crab meat spread on top) medium rare and it was darn good. The whipped potatoes were also very well done. I paired my steak with a 2012 Monster Vineyards red wine (50 cab sauv, 35 cab franc, and 15 merlot I believe) and was extremely satisfied at the end of the meal. Prices are very reasonable considering the other options in the area and the excellent quality of the food and service. The only downside and the reason for the four and not the five star review is the godawful live music some dude was playing when we walked in and were seated. Inexplicably loud Bavarian (?) music that reminded me of being at an Oktoberfest celebration except that it was early July and just a regular Saturday night. But other than that, overall a wonderful experience. One last thing, make a reservation. This place gets packed. Have a wonderful day! read more

For being very whimsical and having great atmosphere (we felt like we were in German pavilion at Epcot, Disney World,) I would give them five stars. I loved the art work, authentic outfits, and live music on the weekends. That was a great touch. The complimentary bread with parsley garlic butter was delicious. Although, the food greatly disappointed us. In their defense, the name of the restaurant is "Steak and Schnitzel" and we ordered neither. I should have asked the waitress for recommendations, and I would have, but I was afraid she would name the very pricey dishes. You can get entrees ranging from $16-23, but many are more. It was pretty pricey, which is fine, but we weren't expecting that. I don't mind paying more for quality food, and I believe the trout and salmon dishes that we ordered (because they were local) were authentic, but almost too authentic for our Cajun taste buds. Everything was cooked fine, but pretty bland and plain. I appreciate healthy food, but I added salt & pepper to everything and wished for butter. The trout dish was breaded and had skin on, which I do not like and I peeled it off. The red cabbage had clove spice in it which was not very appetizing but I ate it because I'm not typically super picky, it was ok. The roasted potatoes were fine and crispy but bland again. Whipped was much tastier (less healthy.) I really wish I could try them again and get dishes like Sausage & Sauerkraut. Please try them out and ask what dishes are popular and have the waitress describe the dishes before you order them. I also enjoyed the local beer and wine selection. We arrived without a reservation, on a Saturday night. We were early but they welcomed us and allowed my wife to come in early while our car issue was being handled. They were very family like. My wife had the Wiener schnitzel and I had the breaded Salmon poached. The Wiener schnitzel was 100% authentic and my wife from Germany enjoyed it. The breaded Salmon was excellent. The clothing worn by the waitresses and hostesses were 100% authentic to Austria. Attire is not formal on this night, but some rules apply, ie no cellphone, no hats. Reservations are requested. Pricing was excellent. Meal costs under $100.00 including drinks and Black Forest cake. Staff thank you for welcoming us. We will return from Calgary. read more

Nice restaurant with plenty of seating and the service we had was fantastic. We're traveling with a two year old and they had a bird room and plenty of colouring books for kids. We stay in invermere many times a year and decided to try it out. The menu is small and the meal was ok. I've eaten plenty of German food in my life and it was ok and expensive. Dino bites for my daughter was 9 dollars for example. If you are traveling on the highway it's a nice stop but the town of invermere has much better value. read more

If I could give three and a half stars on this site I would. I would say that this restaurant is a little above average. The food was good but not great... I think my dish was the best at the table which was the special of the day containing beef tenderloin, lamb, and pork. The other two people were a little disappointed with their dishes and one was a schnitzel dish which they are supposed to be famous for. The service was decent but we were there near the end of the night and it was obvious that the waitress was tired and just wanted to go home.
