I really like this place! Diverse selection of used vinyl that gets replenished often and is well curated - no crappy dollar-bin records here - I almost always find a gem or two. Unpretentious staff. Prices are fair. Good coffee. Only minor gripe is that they don't sort by category, so you usually have to do some digging - I'm generally happy to do that, but sometimes I just don't have the time and end up leaving empty handed. read more

So, I was in Stockholm, Sweden this week for work and had a minute to walk the city for fun. Wandered into a record shop there and as I was thumbing through the vinyl they were playing some great stuff. I asked the cashier what it was and he showed me the CD, which was for sale (sounded like a Daptone production, and sure enough: Menahan Street Band). My point in telling this story is that the last three times I've been into Black Gold, which is a great little shop, whoever works there has been playing some great music in the store...which is not for sale. "Sorry, no, this is my record. It's not for sale." Guys, this is record store 101 stuff. Especially for a shop that doesn't have a dedicated listening station. If you're going to play music in there, it should be a) good and b) for sale. You sell more records that way. Ask the folks at Groove Merchant in SF, Turntable Lab in the East Village, Deadly Dragon in Chinatown...anyone. Other than that minor note I had to get off my chest (and yes, I did tell give this advice to the person working the counter last time I was in there), good little shop with a good selection of stuff and plenty for a decent price. Some a little spendy, but hey, not much in this neighborhood at least gives you at least a chance to get a deal. Keep playing the great tunes and doing your thing. One of my favorite record stores in the city, if not the country. Once you've been there a few times, the staff will start to know your style & what you're looking for, and will hold / pull records they think you'll want....and 99% of the time they're right! Prices are fair, and there's plenty of $2 discs to flip through if you're determined to keep things on a budget. But they also cater to serious collectors, and I've found some of my most treasured vinyl in this shop. Bonus: good coffee, stuffed animals, weird ephemera scattered around Bummer: gets HOT on a late Summer afternoon; gets crowded when there's 3+ customers. I don't think there was anything particularly wrong with this place but it wasn't a fantastic stop on ours day journey either. No new release vinyls, but it did look like there were plenty of good options that were reasonably priced. The newer stock were separated from the rest and were not organized alphabetically but everything else vinyl in the shop seemed well organized. The whole place was much smaller then expected and the big negative for me was that for such a small shop and 25 degree weather I found it puzzling the barista had the door propped wide open which didn't make me feel comfortable to stay and enjoy some coffee/tea. The barista gave us a nice welcoming hello when we first came in but didn't hear another peep from her for the next 10 mins we spent in the store. I think this place has great potential but right now the record store part and the coffee shop part just seem to clash since there isn't enough room for either one. read more

Music lovers in the know can tell you how hard it is to find a collection of records all in one place like this. The music is carefully chosen and the LP's are all in great shape - it's like walking into hours worth of ebay shopping for half the price and no shipping. But man, if theres something I love, it's a good cup of coffee, and you don't get a cup of coffee like this just anywhere. Individually brewed cups? I don't even have the patience to do that at home! For a treat like that I'll gladly pay a little extra to skip the sludge you get everywhere else. Scratch bread: awesome. Coffee: awesome. Records and antiques:crazy awesome. So for a crazy awesome spot like this you might expect some hipster jerks behind the counter? Wrong. The staff are some of the sweetest and most helpful people I've ever met. They've only ever made me feel right at home. I'd move in if they'd let me. And yes, of course they have cream. I have been meaning to check out Black Gold for a while now. After a whole week of lazy post- Christmas lounging around and snowedinedness, I woke up ready for an adventure to Brooklyn! This beautiful shop specializes in three things: they buy and sell records, peddle antiques (lots of dead and stuffed animals O_O) and make coffee. I browsed through the records and sipped coffee (thanks for the almond milk!). They do some cool drip thing that I guess is very special, but I don't really know. It tasted very good though. I didn't end up leaving with anything, but did see a lot of cool stuff in the constantly changing collection. I asked if they had any Jacques Brel and was told they'd definitely stock some for the next time I stop by. Definitely worth dropping in if you're passing by, but also great for a Sunday afternoon trek if you're interested records, coffee, or dead squirrels mounted on wood. Black Gold has fantastic coffee. They pay very close attention to the brew process and they work with very high quality ingredients. The record selection is also fantastic. Digging through their choice bins reminds me how awesome humankind truly is. And then the store owner plays a funky jam on the turntable and it seems that the stuffed animal heads are nodding in agreement. read more

I rushed in here on the way to meet my accountant for taxes because I had gotten too late of a start to make my own coffee and trust Yelp said there was some right here! So there is. It is not fast, but after a few deep breaths and a mantra that my accountant would not abandon me if I was late bearing coffee for her, I got over it. All coffee is pour-over and made one cup at a time. It's a nice slow-food kind of thing and makes the coffee taste nice and strong! The scones I scooped up (bacon chive) were also delish. Morning saved! The rest of the store is worth a re-visit when I'm not so harried. It's mostly records (they were blasting some heavy rap vinyl when I was in) but there are also some off-beat antiques and curiosities I'm sure I'll find an unknown need for! Also! First, good that the moron with the credit card still gave 5 stars, because he is a dope. The reasons small businesses have credit card minimums is because of the fees involved, so they are actually losing their profit margin if they allow credit cards for buying a coffee. Duh. And funny thing about 2017, most people still keep cash in their wallets (or iPhone cases)--the government even still mints those nearly worthless little copper coins. Wanted to love this place. It's cute and smells like coffee. The employees seem nice. The taxidermy reeks of hipster irony. Records are alphabetical with no genre sort. The records are in good condition. Selection is bad. I say that as a digger. The records are obscure rock. I saw some good metal records (anthrax, exodus) hovering around $20-25. My litmus test for record stores is Neil Young. If a shop sells Harvest for over $10, I GTF out fast. At Amoeba that record is $1-2 all day because so many are out there. They had After the Gold Rush for $13. Ridiculous. To be fair most NYC record stores are way overpriced. Even if everything was half price Im still walking out empty handed. Two stars because the girl who worked the counter seemed genuinely nice. Can't do three. read more

Black Gold is such a great store. They have a killer selection of records, all really reasonably priced, and they get new stock in all the time. It's so great to have a record store in Carroll Gardens...as a huge fan of vinyl, there was no place anywhere in/near Carroll Gardens to get vinyl for a long time! I was thrilled when this place opened and now I go in there all the time. It seems like everyone in there knows each other from the neighborhood too - there's a really strong friendly neighborhood vibe surrounding Black Gold. No snobbiness at all. In addition to records, they have lots of really cool taxidermy and antiques. The owners, Sommer and Jeff, are great people. Really friendly and helpful and just so warm and welcoming. I think it is unfair to judge this place as a coffee shop. It is essentially a record store, that for our convenience also serves coffee. I have already been a couple of times and I absolutely LOVE the feeling you get and the people working there. It is very rare to find a place where you can find good vinyl in good conditions for such prices. I absolutely recommend it for good music and nice times. It is the best place to hang out, listen to music and talk about music. The coffee, I won't even get into it. If you compare Dunkin Donuts coffee and Starbucks with this place, then you are just missing the whole point of this place's existence. read more

This place is every music lovers heaven. The store is packed with old records. They are all alphabetized and displayed neatly in their cases, each with a plastic covering. They also buy records, as long as you make an appointment with the buyer. They sell coffee and small treats, like brownies and cookies, so you can sip your coffee while you browse. The woman that helped me was polite and helpful and I would definitely try to sell my records there. If not, at least I know I can enjoy a cup of coffee. read more

Been exploring coffee shops all over NYC. Being from Seattle, it is nice to see a coffee shop that is doing pour over coffee the right way. Cute coffee shop tucked away in a record shop. Looks a little dirty and dingy but the barista was friendly. They have limited options for coffee, mainly the standard stuff (don't come here and expect a white mocha), and it's priced a bit on the expensive side. I love Black Gold- a tiny dark and distinctive space bristling with the smells of musty dead things, delicious coffee & hot cocoa, eclectic finds & obscure gems. I had walked by the shop before and not even seen it until I was looking for it, and I think that is apt for describing this place- it feels like you have been let in to something special (and not in an elitist vip guestlist high-concept lounge way). I found out about Black Gold because I really liked the antiques one guy had at the Brooklyn Flea- awesome 1930's tattoo flash and Free mason type of stuff- and he gave me his card and said he sold antiques at this space that was also a coffee shop and record shop! Prices are fantastic and the selection is great- all of it is used and there are always cheap punk, hardcore, and goth records in. Black Gold is worth checking out often and taking your friends to because the aesthetic is great and even if you don't find a record you like there are sure to be bizarre trinkets and oddities that will mystify and entertain you. read more
