i have to admit that even though i HATE how this place attracts the hipsters who reek of mustache wax...black gold has the best coffee this neighborhood has to offer. the staff is awesome...although a little slow at times. the vegan peanut butter cookies are about as perfect as cookies come. amazing. come here often. read more

Several months ago, I wrote a very disappointed review of Black Gold. After visiting this past week, however, I would like to revise my prior review on several points. To wit: 1). They had cream. Plenty of it. 2.) The coffee (hot this time) was made cup by cup, which is admirable. It could've been stronger, but it had a very good flavor. Nice beans, apparently. 3.) They were very nice. Not pretentious. Not too cool for school. No mention of rice dream this time. 4.) Good sesame cookie. I can't give them 5 stars because I do think $3 is a bit steep for a 12 oz. cup of coffee (which could've been stronger), but I still think they've made some excellent improvements and I would return! read more

This is a cool spot to check out records and get some coffee. I didn't purchase either but I looked through the items they had that were intriguing. I loved the vibe and the barista was very friendly. My friend was interested in selling her records and the woman told her they do purchase records when their buyer is in the store which is good to know. read more

"We still have record stores?" Was my instant reaction when I realized that this placed existed. When I walked into the cozy establishment I was transported to my heyday of playing records from Saturday morning to Sunday night. Spinning the vinyl while cleaning, reading etc. I was instantly greeted by Summer - the vinyl guru and barista. As I sifted through the rows and rows of records as well as chatting it up with Summer, I saw how diverse their collection is. very interesting concept. you get the feel of a music shop, but when you approach the counter and order a single brew coffee, you're transported into a coffee shop. nice antiques to browse while sipping and cool vibe. they need to sell more pastries! (non antiques).. read more

Great coffee, great super-nice staff and an awesome selection of both records and antiques at decent/average prices. There's a lot of second hand records, so I'm sure any record buff will find SOMETHING worthwhile browsing here, whether it's soul, punk, metal, afro-funk, goth rock or assorted weirdness that you're after. I love this quirky place. Great coffee, Nook New Orleans cold brew also awesome. When I first moved to the neighborhood I wondered how a record store did enough business to stay open but they definitely have a niche. The dark, macabre art, decorations and taxidermy is fun (can I saw that?) and the staff is really cool. My only complaint is that I've had some of the baked goods (specifically a croissant) that wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. Now I only get a treat if I notice a new fresh supply. Probably the best coffee in this corner of Gowanus. Cold brew, New Orleans cold brew, pour over, snacks, and yesterday's snacks are all at your disposal. They also sell records and have large tables to do work on. Many interesting biological knick-knacks make up the decor. read more

Go in there and ask for the hot chocolate - it is creamy, delicious with a devilish kick of heat. Do not leave without the marshmallows on the top. Girls - it will complete your life. I was visiting a friend in Brooklyn and we decided to grab coffee before a show. He had checked out Black Gold a few times before and highly recommended that we go there. It is a great new place. The coffee was amazing and the fresh baked snacks were AMAZING to say the least. The best part about it, is that it is half coffee shop, half record store. They had a wide range of genres and a lot of VERY rare collections. A 5 minute coffee trip turned into almost an hour and a bag full of records I would of had to look on Ebay for, and paid twice as much. This spot is a gem for Brooklyn. This place makes me so happy. I recently moved to the neighborhood and love stopping there on my way to the train. The woman there is always friendly and I dig all of her scarves. The coffee is so delicious. The atmosphere is awesome. I want my apartment to look like this. I went there first over the summer and though the iced coffee was was some of the best I've ever had. I love that they carry Scratchbread baked goods - which was a pleasant surprise as the dude behind that company is a friend. I just wish there was more seating and internet so I could tuck in there and write. read more

Literally, the worst collection of LP's I have ever seen under one roof. In fact, it's such a hot mess that you'd call it ironic if it felt like someone was at least making an effort. Weird, experimental art pop, acne-covered kids who's daddy paid to press their record, storytellers - I was amongst several customers going through bins looking stumped and confused. It was like trying to buy music in the Bizarro world. I hear the coffee is great but this is the Pabst Blue Ribbon of record shops - it's swill but all the cool kids with the beards drink it so there must be something great about it. read more

Amazing hole in the wall. I'm from Alaska where there is hardly any selection for records, and browsing their (somewhat small) stacks was a lot of fun. The atmosphere was great with lots of antiques and mounted animals for sale, a unique twist. The owners were talkative and very friendly and my americano was tasty. It's located only a few blocks from the subway station, making it an easy visit from Brooklyn. read more

omg. this place is ADORBS. the coffee was AH-MAZE-N-GAH. each cup is hand brewed. no soy milk, but has delicious rice milk instead. girl who works there is super nice. didn't get a chance to peep the record selection, but i would gather it's pretty awesome from the other reviews. this is the kind of store that would get you to move to the neighborhood. read more

As an old customer of Jeff's now defunct record store in New Jersey, I was stoked when I found out he was opening a new brick and mortar. I think the store looks and is amazing. It's like a wing of the Mutter Museum. The record selection is a little different from the average record store. All of the records are actually good, some are amazing and all are in great condition. They've really weeded through all the crap and the price reflects this. This said the most of the records are still around 5-10 bucks, which I think is worth not having to dig through fifty Tijuana Brass records to get to the one T Rex record in the bin. A previous Yelper commented on the price of coffee. I live in a pretty unhip, small town in Jersey and our independent coffee shop charges almost 3.00 for an iced coffee. I've paid almost 5 bucks for a coffee in some of the city's "cooler" neighborhoods, stuff costs more in New York. read more
