VP Records was an integral part of spreading reggae music all over the world - this landmark is a must-visit for music fans or collectors of vinyl records. The record store moved from Brooklyn in 1975 to its current location in Jamaica, Queens around 1979. Patricia Chin (Miss Pat) and her husband Vincent "Randy" Chin also co-founded Randy's Record Mart and Studio 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. The origins of VP Records can be traced back to the late 1950s when Mr. Chin worked for a jukebox company in Jamaica (the island). He would change out the worn records from the jukebox, which would normally be thrown away, but he had the idea of selling the 45s. This record shop has an incredible selection of Caribbean music so whether you are looking for reggae, ska, dub, rocksteady, lover's rock, dancehall, or soca you will find it here. Reggae music is much more than Bob Marley's Legend and Jimmy Cliff's Harder They Come soundtrack. Check out these artists/producers: Lord Creator, John Holt, Glen Brown, Winston 'Niney' Holness, The Skatalites, Bunny "Striker" Lee, Augustus Pablo, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and King Tubby. Besides the variety of vinyl record and CDs, the store also carries a selection of Jamaica-inspired clothing and books. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Patricia Chin's autobiography Miss Pat: My Reggae Music Journey.

No communication and no opportunity for me to resolve the underlying issue. I sent an email, which went unanswered. I posted on the Facebook page, also unanswered. Ok, ok. For some reason, you just don't want my business. Good thing there's plenty of great music out there and I don't need any reggae from VP.

Mr. Cheapo - You'll find a lot of great stuff. You might have to take two trips back to your car for all the stuff you'll buy.

I was going down to Long Island. I remembered my friend Glenn told me all about this record store…read more It was in Mineola not far away from where I was going to Manhasset New York. Hard to get parking on the street in front of the record store. There's a few spots, but I went around to a parking lot around back behind where the hardware store in diner are. I went and it was pretty busy even on a Tuesday at around 1:15 PM. I was impressed how well organized the store was clean looking too. One of the employees notice me and said "may I help you" I said I was just looking around. I see how it's organized with the CDs and DVDs. He said in the back of the vintage records and cassettes . Everything was laid out very nicely and organized well. Lots and lots of DVDs Blu-ray discs lots and lots of CDs. Many many records as well. Prices looked great on the DVDs. Somewhere $.99 dollar $.99 $2.99 TV box sets also inexpensive. Very good prices on The Records as well. CDs as well but I didn't look at too many of them. I really wanted to check out the cassette section. They had two big sections of cassettes both of them. You had to ask one of the employees to open up the sliding doors. Except for one section with folk cassettes, and some Grateful Dead live cassettes. Immediately picked out about 10 folk cassettes . Pete seger Bonnie Raitt. The letterman, etc.. I went up to the front and told the guy to please unlock the cassette area. Lots of rock and pop from A-to-Z. Most prices were $.99 $1.99. $2.99 $3.99. Some more hard to get ones were $4.99 $6.99. Anyway, I picked up well over 30 tapes. Definitely some I haven't seen before on cassette others. I wanted to get, but were a little pricey in other stores. I told the guy was ready at the front and he came back to lock the area where all the cassettes were. He said wow you got quite a collection of tapes there. He helped carry up a bunch of them. I left them at the counter for them to start pricing. They said thank you for helping clear out some of the cassettes. Maybe not that many people get cassettes anymore. But I still have a cassette deck in my Lincoln town car. As well as a nice couple of boxes, walkmans and a nice tape deck for my stereo system hi-fi system Lots of good CDs. I looked at while they were checking out the tapes The employees were very friendly. I talked to them as they were finishing ringing up the tapes they gave me a punchcard and I got five punches. They told me the stores been there for 40+ years. I'll have to go back and look through the CDs and DVDs next time I go down there. I would definitely recommend this record store. Everything is clean, not dusty or musty laid out very nicely and clearly. There are fantastic deals here. Be careful you might spend too much money and go home with a load of stuff.

It's not what I expected to find here, and if I worked or lived in this area I'm sure I'd want to pop in often to browse or shop. Having said that... the shop is a bit cramped, which makes comfortable browsing a challenge--understood it is the city and real estate is a challenge, but the layout does make for a less than comfortable experience. Perhaps it is the hybrid portion record shop/portion club that means there isn't a ton of room for the shop portion. As for the browsing, it was a bit frustrating -- I was looking for a holiday gift and was having issues and wound up asking for help - "Do you have anything by Tori Amos?" "i dunno" (not super helpful) "...but you can look under T. Yep... they alphabetize by artist first name. I found Weird Al Yankovic under "A". I don't even know where to start there...I would personally expect to find this under Y...if you want to try to make a case to have it under W and treat "Weird" like a band or entity name I won't agree but I'll listen... but under A? For Al? We're alphabetizing by first name? Come on!! Mock outrage aside, it just felt too hard to find anything, not a fun place to browse and not a lot of assistance available to do so. Decent amount of records though, prices seemed a bit all over the map to me--some reasonable, some a bit outlandish--perhaps more careless than trying to rip people off--but I'd wager you can make some finds here. Might not have been my favorite record shop, but it's a record shop nonetheless--I'm sure I'll be back.

Folks running the shop are friendly and knowledgeable, and there's a great selection, so all good there. But it's not my favorite place.
