Kayak with trash from lake Sunday
Jeanine L.

A lovely place to hike, bike, and kayak! The scenery is beautiful and diverse, lots of bird watching. There is more trash on the lake since increase in lots of new homes in area, so if you go bring a garbage bag and clean up such as I do.

One of the most beautiful parks in the area. I visited this place several times, but I didn't realize that there were several areas to enter into the park. The visitor center area is the main one that is closer to the lake; however, you can also park at another residential area entrance to see more of the path toward the bridge. [Parking] Plenty of non-parallel parking. Don't sweat it if you're a new driver. This place is easy to drive to and not hard to park at! I had parked at the Black Hill Regional Park visitor center. It took about a 2 minute walk to see the lake portion. [Photoshoot locations] You're able to use your drones here! We had planned for a photoshoot via drone + DSLR. It was a Bridgerton-styled photoshoot. 1. There's canoes/mini boats that you can take photos in. 2. A walkway to the water. 3. A forest portion. 4. Bridges (depending on what part you enter in at) Photos by: @birhanstudio and @ahmar.shah.photo

We have visited this park a couple of times and find it really lovely. If you like to walk, this is a great and scenic place to get your steps in! It's 1,300 acres. The Black Hill Trail is a fairly easy, 4.6-mile, mostly hard-surfaced trail. There are also 16 miles of natural surface trails and a water trail on Little Seneca Lake. Our most recent visit was mid-week -- on Valentine's Day! It was a beautiful day. Everything was quite clean and well maintained. There were only a few people there enjoying the fresh air and beautiful views but as we were leaving, several cars were headed into the park to catch the sunset from near the Boat Rental shop. Wonderful idea on a beautiful evening.

Great time paddle boating at Black Hill with grandkids. Perfect day. Not too hot. Great spot for picnic lunch too.

Pro: lot of parking lots, playground area, picnic pravlion areas, dog play area, hiking trails, boat rental. Con: lot of poop in grass. Came here on the weekend and there are multiple point of entry. The park has many trails and even has a doggy fenced play area. There are also playgrounds and boat rental. There are restroom and even a volleyball court. There were a lot of poop in the grass area. All in all, an ok park to visit.

Beautiful park! I came here from the Clarksburg side, and it is a very large park. I highly recommend this park for biking. The bike trail is very well maintained. They also have very beginner friendly hike trails as well. I noticed that there were quite a bit of picnic areas and party stands. Overall, great park for many different occasions. Also they have PLENTY of parking!

Love this hidden gem! Heard about it for years but never came until a Yelp photoshoot last fall. It was so picturesque! My church used to have picnics here for years. I regret never going! After the photoshoot I said I'd come back again on my own just to enjoy the scenery and that I did. I got some walking in and some pics of course. It was an early Saturday morning and quite a few folks were also out with their dogs, children and solo (like me). After my walk I sat on a bench near the lake just taking it all in. So peaceful! I plan to come back again sooner than later - it's definitely worth the 30 minute drive for me!

What a gem in Montgomery County! If you have not been to Black Hill Regional Park, then you must RUN don't walk to get there! Actually, you should probably drive, they have plenty of parking! My work recently had a barbecue at this park and I was not only thoroughly impressed but I was actually blown away at the amount of activities they have available to people! Let me list my TOP FIVE reasons you MUST VISIT. Also, you can also take a look at my pictures to see how amazing they are in more detail! 1. PICNIC AREAS!! They have picnic areas with grills and everything and the location we were at was near a bathroom...a clean bathroom so get your hot dogs and hamburgers ready...stat! They have large and small picnic shelters...10 to be exact! 2. PONTOON!! They not only have a pontoon that does tours but they have kayaks, canoes, and paddleboats galore...all the aquatic toys you could dream of..that don't take gas, of course! This is the best place to work your biceps, triceps, and legs! 3. ZAGSTER BIKESHARE! Don't feel like latching your bike onto the back of your car or don't have a bike? Don't worry about it...they have a bikeshare station at the Visitor Center and they are stylish!! Just don't forget your helmet...I love your brain!! 4. FAIRY GARDENS! In addition to the adorable fairy garden area and pick a flower station, they have over 20 miles of hard and natural surface trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This trail includes a fitness station - again, you can get your SWOLL on at the park! 5. GO SEE FOR YOURSELF!

Dog Exercise Area was a large fenced in area with benches, but we were the only dog there. We hike the dirt path of Hamilton Trail. This trail has bridges, river, and trees everywhere for a shaded path. It was great to take a break from work and enjoy a hike day. We brought a picnic and our dogs. We also saw many animals at the lake.

Random door on a tree, unfortunately there were no hobbits or Keebler elves in there

When I first visited Black Hills I wanted to go on a lengthy hike but couldn't find a path around the lake. It was perfectly gorgeous, had a nice dock and you could rent kayaks. It struck me as the type of place families go to for picnics. Then the second time I came here I discovered a paved trail (mostly paved) and a boardwalk that took you into Castle Rock, Germantown. It was a great bike path and also a nice trail if you have kids in a stroller or in my case, a pug in a wheelchair. I knocked out six miles in a day just on the paved path. But then the third time I parked over by the Castle Rock trailhead (instead of in the park) and discovered small branch off trails into the woods. What I am trying to say is that for a free park in Montgomery County,Black Hills is full of surprises. It does not disappoint.

Walk around the lakes routinely- very beautiful to the point I've considered buying property by the lake. Want to take a kayak lesson- soon . Beautiful Spring and Fall and this summer met up with deer! And a couple occasions...

A decent sized park to go on a hike, have a large gathering, ride on kayaks or have a picnic. Been here a number of times and have had pretty good experiences each time out. Very spacious and comforting for families, kids, and adults. Parking areas are easy to find and walk from. The water is nice, nature walks are peaceful and calming. There is a boat rental place and a visitor center as well. A good atmosphere for everyone, for all ages.

Depending on time of year, you can rent boat..or canoe. You can see different types of birds here if your a bird watcher. You can plan a nice picnic here too. There are a few different entrances. The most convenient one for me is off Needwood Rd or you can enter from Avery Rd.

First, if you need an address to find this park, you can use either 15700 Needwood Lake Circle,…read moreRockville, MD or 15700 Needwood Lake Circle, Derwood, MD. This park has two entrances - one on Avery Road and the other on Needwood Road. The one on Avery Road is closer to Go Ape Adventures which is located within the park (at a cost). As you enter this part of the park, and go down a hill, the road will eventually end at a stop sign. It is here you will see a sign that says, "Rock Creek Regional Park, Lake Needwood". You then have to decide if you want to go right or go left. If you turn right, you will come across the Golf Course, Picnic Area, and Archery. If you turn left, you will come across the Boat Shop, Picnic Areas, and Hiker/Biker Trails. Going Right at the "Rock Creek Regional Park, Lake Needwood" sign If you turn right, you will go over a few speed bumps. After you pass this area (and you will see Go Ape to your right), you will also see part of the lake to your left and a little crossing bridge (not for cars). On this side, I have seen people have picnics, go fishing, and hiking as well. If you continue on the road, you will come across a playground to your left and a parking lot - I guess there are more trails back there (I have not gone in the area beyond the playground). To the right of that lot is a place for archery. If you continue on this road, you will exit the park onto Needwood Road. Going Left at the "Rock Creek Regional Park, Lake Needwood" sign If you turn left, you will see a parking lot on your immediate right. Next to this lot, is a volleyball court - I have seen folks play volleyball here. If you continue through a walking path in the trees, you will come across some covered picnic tables and more trails taking you closer to the lake. As you get back in your vehicle, past this parking lot and follow the road, it will steer you to the right and you go down towards the lake. In this area of the road, I have seen people park on the road whenever the park gets crowded (there are marked spaces). As you continue down, you will see a much smaller parking area which is next to the boat house. You can walk through the boat house to another part of the lake, but as far as renting boats, that is only available during the summer months. Most times, this lot is filled, but not to worry, because if you continue traveling just a few feet more, you will come across an even bigger parking lot. It is in this bigger lot, you will come across a map layout of the whole park - more of Lake Needwood. There are also a few porta-potties. Within the area is a huge grassy field that is perfect to just lay a blanket and chill, but you may have to complete with geese in the area. There are 2 trails on this side by the map - if you go to the left, the trail is on a very flat surface - be careful when walking as you will end up crossing a few roads like Southlawn Lane and Avery Road, to name a few. By that same map, if you take the trail to the right, you will go up a hill, cross over the lake and continue on even more trails in this park. I like coming to Lake Needwood. I have done walks here on a few of the different trails and have even gone off the beaten path. Had lunch on a picnic table or two and even did pedal boating, however you won't ever find me in a kayak. Overall, it is nice to come here to just chill and enjoy nature. Josh offered me a few pick up locations and offered to drop us at our hotel marina. Once on the boat we covered a quick but thorough safety brief. We toured the river before entering the bay. Carmelita and Josh made suggestions for restaurants and other activities on Solomons and pointed them out as we passed them. Our tour took us around Solomons Island and under the bridge at sunset. Carmelita took pictures of us the whole time and shared them with us after the tour. It was great talking with them about how they got into sailing and how they learned their craft. The boat was clean and appeared to be sound. On the way back lighting storms were surrounding us. The light show was really cool to watch. The storm was about 30 miles so there was no danger and we felt safe the Josh and Carmelita were keeping an eye on the weather. I would definitely recommend their tour or charter service. The lake itself is gorgeous, and always so picturesque.... I have hiked the Lakeside Trail a few times, which is about three miles and mostly wooded, with two creek crossings (one easy, the other more difficult, requiring stepping on stones that could be slippery or even, at times, underwater). The first time we hiked the trail we did get lost as we skipped the difficult creek crossing and ended up going straight, and almost right back out of park...so bring water to drink and wear (or bring) a pair of shoes that can handle the creek water (it's not safe to swim--so I'm assuming, or wade around--in). UPDATE: Part of the Lakeside Trail has construction going on around it (near the easier stream crossing) and last time we encountered it we decided to turn around rather than trying to get around the mess...but there are other parts of the trail to explore, including hiking along the path that' intersects with Rock Creek Trail (or you can go around the other end of the Lakeside Trail, close to the Avery Park entrance...) Usually when we're here we don't do the entire trail, anyway, but turn around at various points, depending upon how long we want to walk. Although the park does get busy on weekends (and it can be difficult to get a parking spot at the Avery Park lot) the further along the trails you go the less people you'll encounter. Weekdays are also pretty peaceful. I look forward to visiting the Meadowside Nature Center when it reopens--this is located at the other park entrance at Muncaster Mill Road.
